I HATE MY CAR!

Okay, so right as it gets going again, I have epic failure of the engine variety. I'm driving with the CD player up pretty loud and I don't even notice that my engine cuts out. I realize I have no power steering and my power brakes are fading fast. Still slightly rolling, I put it in neutral and hit the ignition. It cranks over, almost sounds like it's going to start, then nothing. I turn on the 4 ways and push it to the side of the road. Check the oil dipstick. Nothing. Put in a quart of oil. Brings it right up to the low mark. Put in another quart and we're good. Strange since we were okay at the beginning of the week, but I'm not too concerned. My oil filter is still intact and after an hour, I have the same amount. Strange, so I keep looking around. All the plugs are fine, the battery is fine, I have fuel. It sounds like my timing is really off from what it sounds like, but the motor ALMOST wants to start, so I have a feeling it's not the timing belt. What is going on??? All the damn outback does is break!

It sounds like your burning oil and at a fast rate.. Have you done maintenance to your outback since you got it? Do you notice any pissing oil or leaks on the headers/cam covers/catalytic converter?

Cam/Crank seals
Rear main seal
Timing belt? .. it is a possibility that your tensioner bolt has snapped but high unlikely

A few of my buddies have had this problem.. they only burn oil at high speeds.. hwy driving or aggressive driving.

Is your car throwing codes? any CEL?
Does your engine cut out when idling?

FUCK! It was the timing belt. I guess the shop put on a new belt to see if it would work, but being an interference motor, it obviously didn't. But, this is a good thing in some ways. I talked to my mom about doing an STi swap and she said it would be fine if I paid for it. Honestly, I think that's what I'm going to do.

not to mention the axles, hubs, brakes, wheels, etc. you'd have to get too...

I'm very well aware of what will be required to do this swap. I'm hoping to find a used STi motor/trans/diffs for around $5k. I should be able to at least INSTALL them myself, though getting an ECU and tuning it to make it WORK will be a lot different, I'll have that done by someone who knows what they're doing. Fortunately, I know a lot of people that have done some sweet work with turbo systems and ECUs that I trust with my ride.

You might as well sell your subie and buy an sti because i heard all the wiring and all that stuff is a hassle and almost not worth it. But it'd be a nice project =]
