Rust on paint

So I ran into an issue.... I stuffed my muffler with steel wool to keep the Honda sound of my muffler down. This worked with my Accord and it sounded great. Anyway this isn't about sound, the problem is the steel wool rusted over time and small pieces shoot out of the muffler wet and land on my bumper and trunk. So now I have a lot of tiny rust marks on my back, the WHOLE back of the car is covered. Just want to know if theres anything that can take it out? I have Turtle wax rubbing compound and Meguires paint cleaner in my garage that I'm going to try and use. But if theres anything else that could work let me know, thanks.

a claybar + good polish works best.

claybar, I didn't think of that, thanks. I have a few different polishes, but mostly stick with Meguires and Mothers.

Usually something like this can be cleaned away without wet sanding.

lol thanks Al, thanks a lot buddy :smt023 I cleaned my car real quick just to get the dirt and salt off and I noticed it. I didn't inspect it because I knew what the problem was. It's white paint, I was just hoping it didn't stain it to the point that it won't come out.

Nah, the clear coat protects it from staining. Your single stage hood... now that's another story.

I used the Meguires paint cleaner and it took most of it out but you can still see it close up. I can't find my damn rubbing compound. Al I know you have some tricks up your sleeve, what do you got?

3000 grit wet sand and polishing compond to finish it off. it will however be shineyer then the rest of the car.

That's a good idea, plus using a buffer to build up some heat (If you're doing this outside)

However, build up won't release what's bonded to it, and you'll be wetsanding it into the clear coat.


1-Try getting some wax and grease remover.

2-Wipe down the entire ( yes, the ENTIRE) trunk and other parts that have spatter.

3-You can use Dove dishwashing liquid (1teasoon:1Gal.ratio for freezing and ease at sanding) and lightly wetsand w/2000 grit or above.

4/5/6- :grin: After you've sanded it, wash it down again with the degreaser, and buff out using medium coarse compound keeping the buffer at 1300-1500 RPM. Anything to aggressive will give you swirl marks. Wipe down with a terry cloth, bond it with a polish and wax for good "winter" measure.


TADAH!!! :lol:


Usually.... (USUALLY) a good wax and grease (Your Exhaust gook) will take this out in the 1st wash, butif you think you need to go further, this would be what I (Me :smile: ) would do.

I've had and gone through that phase already, I'd prefer to get up in the air with a truck and go off-roading.

Believe me, I don't own a Subaru because of snow. The tires I have on my car are SHIT in the snow. Theres no places for me to play around in the snow with my car. I like the styling of the car, and the feel of it vs FWD. If I lived in a climate that had no snow I would be happy to still have my Legacy for sure.

Back on topic, still havent finished this yes, hopefully I can get around to it thursday.

Just get some soapy water and some 2000-3000 grit sand paper some polish..

Who knows, you might get lucky and get it out with the degreaser. Do you have pics of said spatter?

So I only tried it on one spot and the paint cleaner isn't going to work. I can't find my rubbing compound so thats on hold. I also tried 2000 grit alone and it seems like it's not doing much. I'm going to try it out again tomorrow. Until then here is a pic of some of it, this is on the WHOLE backside of the car.

You meant dry sanding, right? If so, its gonna take some water and elbow grease to get some results.


BTW- It looks like each particle of the wool burnt its way into the clear. If that's the case, I don't think just wet sanding it will get it out. I don't know, I'd need to see it in person.

Yea dry sand, too cold for water. I'll man up and try it tomorrow though. In person it doesn't look "burnt", but I'm not a body/paint guy like you so you would know better than I. So if I wet sand this and polish, what happens to my clear coat? If theres any even left now.

Cross hatching while sanding is kind of away to not sand through. Lightly sand it using plenty of water and wipe clean along the way, that way you can always see your progress. Try that.

wow thats some ugly ish.. dude stop shoving misc items/bodyparts in your exhaust hole.. from the looks of things i would try starting at 1000 and working my way up to 3000(in 1000 increments) and then finish with polishing compound.. that looks iffy man.. maybe it will clear up after a few minutes of manhandling some sand paper
