o noes!

I was about to embark on a nice, long, scenic drive today and I noticed a loud knocking around 2500+ RPMs. I stopped by Kragen and did some investigative work and it seems as if it is the AC Compressor.

I just replaced my long block, and belts along with it. I did tighten the belts myself, but I had one of the employees check the belt tension and they said it looked fine at the time, so I don't think it is from over tightening.

Here's the question: How severely will this affect the drivability of my '98 2.5 GT? The AC still blows cold, but the sound is obviously worse when it is turned on, how highly should I prioritize getting a new unit?

Thanks,

Phil

i had the same sound and problem after a spirited day at the track. I just left the car idling with a/c on full cold for a while and that solved my problem. Was apparently due to the compressor oil sloshing where it shouldnt. Maybe your compressor just needs some more oil and a recharge?

Okay, I'll give that a shot, thanks.

On the EJ and EG, yes theres a seperate belt that only runs the a/c compressor and tensioner/idlers.

So you could just remove said belt?

in the winter when you have your defroster on the a/c compress is on it help dehumidify the air to help the windshield from fogging

yeah a/c is nice in the summer but its HEAVENLY in the winter. Your a/c stops windows fogging up and youll go crazy pretty quickly without it if youre anything like me

But yes, you could just remove that belt or just unplug the 2 wires going to the compressor if youre lazy

So, the knock itself doesn't bother me as much as not knowing if I'm damaging other parts of my engine as I continue to drive it. Is this something I need to take care of asap, or can it wait for greener wallet pastures?

if the knock is only present with the a/c on....unplug the compressor and ignore it for as long as you wish

then pop the belt off, only takes 5 mins. if it still knocks remove the power steering/alternator belt as well. If it still knocks with both off you have a serious issue that needs to be solved immediately.
