95 Legacy Auto and AWD is INOP????

Well my 95 Legacy LSi Wagon w/Automatic Trans went from AWD Thursday to FWD Friday. I have read several of the posts covering numerous Trans problems but nothing that has helped me fix the car. I posted this problem on a local forum and thought I would try this one as well. I would like to know a few things. How would I check the TCM for a code if I can on this car? I am woking with the Haynes manual is there a better one out there? Is there an online Subaru parts store that is cheaper than the dealership? And I guess the main question, Does any one know what would cause the AWD to stop working? Like what part I might need to look at or if I should replace the entire Trans? Any input is appreciated. People always leave out very important info, espeically with this.

How many miles are on the car?

If you dont have a flasing ATF temp lights there are no codes to pull.

What condition is your fluid in?

Your clutches may be shot, it does happen.

Can you force AWD in Low?

Okay there are 183,000 miles on it. The AT Temp light does not flash or come on while the enigne is running. It does come on when I turn the key to the on position but then turns off as soon as the engine starts. The ATF seems to be clean, it isn't discolored or smell burt. The AWD is gone completely. I tried seeing if it would engage in 1-3 but nothing same as D and R just FWD.
Since this does seem to be pointing towards the clutches am I able to buy the clutches separetly or do I have to buy a whole transmission? And again is there a better manual out there than the Haynes?

The AWD unit can be rebuilt, as it sounds like yours may just be tired. When my went i had the dealer rebuild it for 850 since i do not have a garage.

You can find FSM on bittorrent. Haynes doesnt really cover this.

My old mechanic in Golden, Colorado told me when I bought my '95 manual wagon that you could jury rig an automatic to be front wheel drive by removing a fuse - he did not specify which one. My question was in regard to just getting better gas mileage for the summer. For a manual - no dice.

Maybe your problem is electrical?

Old wives tail on the gas mileage. you still have to move the extra axles rear diff dirveshaft etc etc etc. You put a fuse in the FWD fuse holder under the hood. You can burn out the solenoid and thats 250.00 to fix. Do the math for the maybe 1mpg you gain and you loose. Also if you want a FWD car buy a honda. You can get rid of a few 100 lbs of extra stuff and get the mpg you want.

I priced out the clutch pack that would fix the AWD problem and I can only get it from the dealership. :-( They want $313 dollars just for the part. I also ordered a FSM from ebay and am currently having problems with that too. I'm still driving the car and it keeps moving fine, it is just like another FWD car. I'm hoping I get a decent sized tax refund so I can fix the Subie. I miss AWD. :smt010

If you can join RS25.com or NASIOC.com, you could try PMing "Storm" - he's a friend of mine and has worked on destroyed gearboxes etc for awhile now, he might be willing to replace the clutch packs for you, for a lot less than the dealer. Real nice guy too.

you need either new clutches or just get a new tranny form a junker. i had it happen in my last car.i was gonna get a whole tranny for 4 bills but it got wrecked instead.

That is another option I was considering. There is a Legacy Outback In a junk yard near me. I guess I figured the parts might be cheaper. I guess when I get my tax return I might have to give them a call.

(Don't ask about the hood on the Junk yard car as it was damaged in the accident.) :smt033
