man i love the sound of that exhaust! It'd be a hell of a mean sounding car nailing it through the gears if it were a manual.

Your interior makes me envious :P damn us BG5 owners and our not as flash interiors.

LOL you can get Revision D front cuts from japan reasonably cheap. The drawback is because the nose sticks out a couple inches further, it has a nasty tendency to mash itself into sidewalks/speed bumps/multi storey car park ramps.

2.5 isnt comparable to the 3.0. The 3.0 wins in every aspect from fuel economy to reliability. The car drives best low down in the rev range and pulls nicely from around 2200rpm to 5500rpm. Anything above that is just making noise.

Ive been having fun lately flooring it in 3rd gear to pass people and not shifting till the limiter cuts in. Sounds cool  But you dont really go any faster than shifting at 5500.

Looking forward to getting the new gearbox built up and installed. After that ill be mocking up some new headers. Will be sure to post pics n goodies.
Was trying to figure out how to run the turbo exhaust and had mine off - couldnt resist starting her up

Hehee just saw this - It IS manual now :D
Plenty of vids on my youtube (keltickiwi) of track days etc. Good friend of mine (notanotherwhitegtb) has transplanted his H6 into a 1994 WRX STI RA so i need a little extra something to keep up with him

Fitted some 'newer' Bilstein struts with H&R springs on them. Also fitted a Cusco upper front strut brace and a Cusco lower brace. Handles MUCH better now and looks a little more agressive which i like :D

Hey guys, new updates on the ride! Ive done a lot tbh so bear with me.

First up - the car still looks the same, so no new pictures in this update. I will however give you a youtube link right now for those with ADD who just like pretty pictures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QbW5bTWurA

And heres a small in car clip to show ya how nicely ive got this handling these days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clKj9XPFN4U

So what have i done since the last update. Well heres a list and a description of the outcome from each mod.

* Added 4pot STI front calipers. Straight bolt on mod, no parts required. Took 10 mins and was worth its weight in gold. The 4pot calipers have good feel and dissipate heat a metric fucktonne quicker than the 2pot cast iron units. Easily feelable and measurable improvements for relatively little money. Plus they look cooler!

* Bearings in gearbox number 1 got tired and it started jumping out of gear so i replaced it with a box from a 1996 WRX.

* Wanted a firmer ride for clubsport trackdays so installed Tein adjustable coilovers with electronic damping force controller. The handling took a massive improvement and the ride quality was one of the best ive ever had from adjustable struts. WAAAAAY better than the BC or Cusco units. Adjustable damping force was also insanely good for towing as i could stiffen up the rear shocks and keep the front soft.

* Fitted a towbar and towed the shit outta some things. These wagons can tow a bloody good load. Had a mates 1999 BH wagon on a tandem trailer and it towed nicely. Was definitely on the limit of what i would want to pull tho.

* 2nd gearbox I managed to chip a couple teeth off 1st gear. It then got noisy bearings and was replaced with one from a 1996 WRX.

* 3rd gearbox was a little bit whiney from day one and got beat on hard. It lasted 6 months before destroying the input shaft bearings to the point where a bearing caught up and spun making one helluva racket. It was then replaced with a stronger box from a 1999 WRX with the 8 bolt bell housing.

* Got sick of the firmer ride from the Teins, while it was good - by this point i was no longer using the car for clubsport events so swapped back to stock bilstein struts and gained a big improvement in ride quality and mid corner manners.

* Got sick of the shitty throttle response and hesitation from the factory ECU. By this point - the A/F sensors in the exhaust were wearing out and since they are a $400 per unit.....i installed a Link G4 aftermarket computer and learned how to tune. Ran it on the rollers and returned better torque figures than the factory ECU but peak power was unchanged.

* Gearbox number 4 lasted 2 weeks before i chipped 1st gear doing launches at traffic lights playing with the launch control function on my ECU. Its still in there and i think this time im going to buy a much newer trans from a 2006+ model and adapt it to fit.

* Engine has just ticked over 200,000kms and to be honest they have been very hard miles most of the time. Its always been well maintained and looked after but has had a good raping on the weekends. So finally, its showing signs of age. Im starting to lose compression on cylinder 2 through ring wear and am getting some oil usage under off throttle coasting. The engine will be pulled over christmas and im going to replace it with a newer EZ30R from a 2006+ Legacy so i will finally have heads that can flow.

Exciting times! Looking forward to a good few more years with this thing yet. Shes never let me down and puts a smile on my dial when i want to play silly buggers.

Im fairly sure all turbo models from 1998-2004 had the same brakes. If your car has the 294mm rotors up front then you can just bolt on STI calipers no worries. The rear is a different story, you will need adaptor brackets if you wanted to run the STI 2pot rears.

Yeah pretty sure thats the same rotor. Vented and around about 290-294mm depending on which catalogue you look in.

So then they could possibly work?? I'm going to look into this for the spring! :o So when you say that 290-294, that means they will fit that range?

I mean they are all the same rotor but different parts catalogues quote the measurements differently. I know that Znoelli used to call it a 294mm rotor and TRW call it a 292mm i think. Either way, the next closest size is 277mm so yes the 4pots should bolt straight up.

The old motor started really smoking and eventually earned itself a spot in the shed to be dismantled and upgraded. Cylinder 2 was down below 110psi on a hot compression test and it was blowing blue constantly until warmed up...so it was time to go.
Pulled the gearbox and have installed a new 5 speed from a 2003 BE Legacy. Its very tight and has a great shift feel compared to the old one. As for the engine - Im still doing some wiring on it and minor installation things but heres the current status;

EZ30R from a 2006 Legacy 3.0R. More details to follow once its all started up and running. Aiming for 170kw at the wheels, should be tuned mid January.

I would do anything to get my hands on a EZ30R for my BE. And to get it at a reasonable price. Its the manual transmission that kills my ability to pick up any old EZ30.

I think you have the only engine I envy on this site. There are some powerful cars out there, but i'd take an EZ30R over anything. Especially for my BE.

Then i'd turbo it. Haha

A good one can be had for about 100,000yen. Bell housing is the same as any other Subaru motor so the gearbox comment confuses me a bit.

I've heard that the EZ30 only came in A/T, and will not bolt up to a manual transmission. The EZ30R will however, because it was paired with a a manual transmission in 08+ Legacys. I don't know for myself, but that's what I am told.

I've never heard that it won't bolt up, but that since it only came with an automatic transmission, that it is harder to wire it with a manual. I could be wrong, and if so, I don't mean to misinform anyone.

The EZ30R engine will fit any Subaru trans - but the factory ECU is expecting an auto trans. Hence, why people have to use a standalone ECU (like a Link Plus) to tune the engine.

keltik
12-23-2011, 02:42 PM
My car originally ran a EZ30D from the factory which i converted to manual. The block and thus bell housing is identical between the 2 motors. The auto and manual bell housings are the same so no problem at all running a manual trans on any Subaru auto. Have a read of my conversion thread to get a better idea of whats involved.

Got the oil cooler and final coolant pipes sorted last night, aiming to get the throttle body adaptor plate done tonight - then i can buy some fluids in the boxing day sales and have it ready to fire up.

Got the motor in and running nicely, off to the dyno on Tuesday morning to get it all tuned up. Quite excited really. It sounds a lot more aggressive now and the engine bay looks a little bit cooler. Most importantly it doesnt blow vast clouds of blue smoke all over the show.

Had my tune sorted today. Managed 160kw peak at which point the exhaust was holding it back. I run a fairly restrictive multi-chamber rear muffler to keep cruising noise levels down and dont want to change it just yet. With better fuel (98RON), more dyno time and a new exhaust sorted - i would expect around 170-180 at the wheels.

Didnt get a dyno plot but did video one of the runs. It turned out shitty so i wont post it up here just yet.

Heres some pics from today.

Overall the car drives very well. It stays on the low lift cam at cruising throttle which keeps exhaust noise down and makes it a bit lazier so nicer to cruise with. Then once you squeeze on the gas, the high lift cam clicks in and it starts pulling away nicely. Passing long lines of cars is excellent fun since it really gets going around 4500rpm then screams its way to the end of the tacho. Its an instant hit once you get into the next gear and starts screaming away again - by which time the speed limit is a distant memory.

Will post up a vid once ive done some chase camera work.

Updated the first post with the latest mods. Changed the youtube links too - you should definitely have a look at them now. The sound clip vid features the EZ30R and is an aural masterpiece ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRi3V1HlUQ8 )

Swapped in DCCD from a Type R Impreza this week. Its very fun and i hope to upload some videos from my next gymkhana. Hopefully with lots of sideways action.

So far i know it does good donuts! Probably helped by the suretrak LSD in the rear. Comments welcome as always

Added new rear sway bar and adjustable rear links. Handling balance is now rather tail happy under power and pretty lethal in the wet unless i wind the center diff up a bit. Perfect!
