This morning one of my belts broke and the other came off as well. Should I attempt to put on new ones myself or should I leave it to the pros? I feel that I am pretty handy. Are there any special tools needed? HELP!

I not sure the exact set up on a 2.5 but I know on a 2.2 really straight forward. remove belt covers. Losen tensioners/Alternator. Apply belts, inner one first. Tighten tensioners not too tight though. Install shields. and Tah Dah :smt023

TURNS OUT THAT I NEED A NEW CRANK PULLEY. THE GASKET THAT HOLDS THE PULLEY TO THE HUB AND ROTTED OUT. THIS CAUSED THE BELTS TO COME LOOSE. I NEED TO FIND THE REMOVER TOOL. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHERE I CAN BUY ONE?

You could see if Autozone has it from their rental program. No sense in buying a tool that you will use once and does nothing but collect dust.

to pull the crank pulley? you just need to remove the fans, 22mm breaker bar and pipe. place between the passenger side frame and ground. bump the engine over (but dont start) remove the bolt most of the way, and give the pulley a tug when its free remove the bolt and pulley

The rubber insert in the pulley rotted out? That's very strange.

Hehe that's the adventurous way. If you put the tranny in 5th gear you should be able to break the bolt loose with a breaker bar by hand too...

Turns out that I need my car this weekend so I took it to my mechanic. I wanted to do it myself but I just dont have the time with work or a garage to work in. Does the subaru removal tool allow the pulley to be removed without removing the fans? Any guesses as to how much the shop is going to charge me, I am guessing between 250 and 300 with parts.

yes. ive never had much luck with 5th gear way and you can do that with autos
i dont know what the shop will charge you its around 1.5-2 hrs most people will charge to do the pulley so that times there rate + parts

The shop charged me 327 bucks. They had to pull the fans and radiator. if it wasnt so cold out I would have done it myself.

WTH I have changed the pulley before and there is definately enough room to do it without removing the fans and radiator...

On my old automatic BD I had to take the coolant overflow out, the radiator and the fans before I could get the socket and wrench in there to loosen the bolt.
