Think this CDT 7" mid will fit into the front '97 doors, I'm sure I'd have to fab up some MDF spacers but that's usually easy enough. Just mulling over another option, hate to buy them only to find out they won't fit without major work. They're supposed to be very tight for 7's.

I thought the fronts were only 6.5" diameter?

Mounting depth is going to be limited, but the plastic grille could be dremeled out...

They are 6.5's however, since I'll be making a trim ring out of MDF anyway I was wondering about installing the larger woofer in the door. I would just make the outside of the ring larger to accomdate the driver. I have yet to take hte door panel off so I'm not familiar with what the grill looks like from the back end.

Are doors well sealed from the factory ? Some cars are some are not. My Jetta was terrible, next to no bass up front since there was a ton of air leaks naturally occuring in the OEM panel.

sorta enclosed but not sealed.

The grille on the door panel has nothing to do with size fittings on these doors, You'll probably have to shave a bit of metal off the door assembly to fit it.

There is a plastic bracket that mounts the speakers, and then it mounts the speaker to the metal door. Its hard to explain, you should really take your door panel off (its easy).

Oh yes, the 'can this fit' question.

My answer is yes. I believe it will fit fine. I have a Adire Koda 6.5 inch and it has 1.5 inches of spacers cause its 3 inches deep. Even with the spacers the speaker still fits under the plastic grill, and the panel snaps in. (I did do a little, and i mean *little* cutting on the backside of the panel). I believe a 7 would fit fine. The only problem I ran into was the window stop metal nub (part that stops the window from going down any further) was scraping against the koda. I believe this only happens on the koda cause the magnet is 6 inches side. I had another speaker (CDT 61) in the door with the 1.5 spacer and the little nub doesnt rub at all).

Do it!
