Hey all. Just discovered this forum on a tip from the LegacyGT forums. I've got a handed-down 1998 Outback Limited with a little over 221,000 miles (yikes)! It's been a faithful little car, and hopefully it'll continue this way because it looks like I'm stuck with it for awhile. My next car will likely be a brand new one! The only thing I've really done to it is installed a pretty sweet carputer setup under the passenger seat with a screen that I can fold up and slide into the dash out of site.

I'm an Aerospace Engineer at Virginia Tech - love cars and computers.

Yeah - I just unplug the VGA cable and it flips up and slides in. That's where the cupholder used to be obviously. I just built myself a VERY rudimentary rail system that's mounted on top of the head unit. I saved the wood trim and cupholder front plate, glued them together, and laid a magnetic strip across the bottom, so that when the screen is folded up and in, I can stick this "faceplate" on and it looks stock other than two thin lines on each side where it's been cut out. I'll take a few more pics or a short video or something to show you if you're interested.

That car looks to be in great shape. A freakin' aerospace engineer would have a computer in their car LOL! I wish mine looked that good, I think mine started out that color green when it was new but some things happened to it in its journey to this point and now its 5 different colors on the outside and runs 11 lbs of boost.

Nice Stowe sticker. Have you personally been here or was it already on the car?

Thanks for the comments guys! I'll admit, it has it's share of problems but for the mileage it's in fantastic shape. Still the original tranny and engine (new head gaskets though, duh).

Yes, the car and I have been to Stowe (we traditionally go up there every winter after Christmas for a week). Finally stayed at the Von Trapp Lodge last year! Beautiful place.

I put together a quick video to show how the carputer works. I always laugh when I see videos people make of their setups because they ALWAYS sound ridiculously nerdy, but mine is no exception, and I was kind of doing it on the fly, so there's a lot of "uhhhs" and "errhmmms" and useless junk (didn't bother editing the video either). Also, I took a few videos, and the only good one happened to have a bunch of static and noise so you'll have to bear with that too. The mechanism is towards the end of the vid - I kind of go through the setup and how it works first. Enjoy!

Yeah, and also check out Flat4va.com. Alot of Roanoke locals resided over there. Even though they don't post much  ..but keep an eye out, we do have meets every couple of months or so, depending on the weather.

Haha, I dunno about that...tough to convince management of discounts with today's economy.

Snowflakes are a term used to describe Legacy GT wheels. They were a multispoke design and are popular in the Legacy crowd. You didn't get them because you have an Outback, even if it is the Limited model, you still get the smaller wheels to allow for the tall sidewall that Outbacks come with. I searched to find a decent pic of some snowflake wheels but couldn't come up with anything good.

Ahhh, I actually knew that, lol. Anyway, I'm not a big fan of putting larger wheels on the Outback. It's my personal taste that they look out of place unless the car is lowered somewhat, which is not what I plan on doing. Maybe on my next Outback I'll get a nice set of wheels that look good, but of all the Outbacks, I still think the 1st gen looks the toughest and most off-roady (and therefore the best-looking) and I think the stock limited wheels look nice on it. Thanks for the offer though!

When I got the car, the bumpers both front and rears were both scratched up. I dont mind it as my car resides in an area with massively lifted pickups and Sorority girl Jettas and would rather not fix those problems as it would get messed up again.

People that drive big trucks around me actually know how to park them better than 75% of everybody else who drives small cars even though the trucks are 10 times bigger. College parking lots have the worst parkers in the world it seems like.

That does make sense as some of my buddies with trucks have really good depth perception and parking skills but for some god awful reason, the ones on the street I park usually take two spots and have to go at full speed when trying to find a spot.

Its just that I'm from the country and everyone has a truck so they know how to drive and park them. Its all the city people who have big trucks that never get used as a truck should that don't know how to park them.
