howdy all! I used to have a 96 legacy wagon on here but sold that for my wrx...
Thought I'd post up pics of the newest member of our family.

it's a 95 L 2.2 5spd with 175k on it. My gf and I purchased it to use as a rallyx car to keep some of the wear and tear off of our daily drivers (her's in an 02 outback sport and mine is the wrx in the 1st pic) We bought the car for next to nothing from her parents after her brother supposedly blew it up. The roll back dropped it off last night and surpsingly, from what we can tell the motor is not blown like we were told. after throwing some jumper cables on the completely dead battery, she came to life.... (at least enough to get her out of the alley and into our driveway)
current plans:
~get the engine running reliably
~fix the folded passenger control arm and busted endlink
~make sure eveything is a ok.
future plans:
~junkyard 2.5 swap
~outback struts/springs
~outback sway bars
~semi-stripped interior
~more supportive seats
~aftermarket steeringwheel
~stickers (afterall... what kinda rally car would it be without stickers!!!)

those are morettes on the bugeye. I have a thread on the wrx in the members rides II.

Good luck with the legacy build. I hope to see it dirty, soon.
What kind of tires are you thinking of running? I have Blizzaks on mine for now, but I think I am getting in on a group buy for some Hakka's or HakkaII's.

i have a set of pirelli soft compound rally tires currently mounted on steelies.
i'm hoping to pick up a set of 15" alloys to get them mounted on as i've heard that steelies are not a great idea as they tend to bend and tear...
Ruh Roh

I do not think I have ever seen the pirelli's at a Rally-X, pretty much all the M4 drivers around here run winterforces.
to bad you are not looking for 16's.

Nice to see you over on this site. There is a thread on here about the difference between an Outback and the regular Legacy in case you are interested in completing the off-road conversion. Not only are the springs and struts different but the body also has several lift points. If you were able to find an Outback in a junkyard and scavenge the body lift pieces you would be set.

i have lifted a legacy but i just did the strut/springs and skipped the spacers. I was still able to get aligned within spec but if/when I do lift the car, i may do the spacers this time.

picked up:
'00 2.5 rs seats
driver's side door (lower corner is rusted out on the current door... color even matches!)
driver's side mirror
outback front bumper
new battery
plugs and wires
coolant
new thermostat
universal mudflaps
ordered:
short shifter
aftermarket steering wheel/hub adapter
ebay strut tower braces
poly shifter stay bushing
momo 3 pt harnesses (waiting on confirmation from the seller)
gf will be picking up a control arm from the local garage Monday. then we'll hopefully be getting it all together and getting the car registered/inspected yet this week.

Awesome!! Those tires look pretty aggressive, do they work well in the mud?
Looks like you are making some pretty quick progress. Do you happen to have any links to some rallycross schedules in your area. I am looking to do quite a bit of traveling this year and see how I compare with other regions.
strat81
02-02-2009, 08:24 PM
we normally run at summit point. check out wdcr-scca.org for the schedule. we may look for other events that aren't TOO terribly far from our area too. (i know they run some non-sanctioned events outside pittsburgh and a buddy tells me there are some events in NY too that aren't too bad of a drive from williamsport) the pirellis work pretty well. i've found that they are alot more predictable in loose stuff than other tires i've run on...
last night the gf and I pulled the stock seats and the nasty carpet. rs seats are bolted in and we got some rubber floor mats for now. haven't decided if we'll put carpet back in yet.
gf picked up the replacement control arm today.
she's going to get the car registered tomorrow (possibly insured too) so we can drive it over to the rents garage and have a heated/sheltered place to work on it. I need to do the thermostat and get some coolant in the system though before we get that far.
strat81
02-03-2009, 09:02 PM
thermostat is replaced... unfortunately the car has a leaking radiator so progress is at a stand still till we can pickup another one. (seems to be cracked at the upper hose neck and i did replace the upper hose and made sure it was snug)
checking with a local shop tomorrow to see if they have any.
strat81
02-05-2009, 07:01 PM

accomplished the following today:
installed new radiator
pulled the ac condenser
installed the new steering wheel
installed the poly shifter stay bushing
installed the new plugs and wires
installed the new control arm
installed the outback bumper cover
ran into a bit of a running problem though... once the car gets a bit of temp in it, it does NOT like to run. it stalls out and studders alot. need to get this tracked down ASAP.
any thoughts?

boo on the heads. how the hell did you bend that or was it the old owner?
strat81
02-10-2009, 12:58 PM
previous owner bent the control arm...
at this point i have 1 of 2 options to get this running relatively quickly (the previous owner is what i like to call "car retarded" so i'm going on the assumption that the heads are warped as I'm pretty sure he wasn't intelligent enough to go "oh the car's overheating, i better pull over and not keep driving until the temp comes back down)
1. is a 9.49:1 compression 2.2 running phase I 2.5 heads, sti gaskets, and our stock 2.2 block.
2. is a 2.2 block with 2.2t internals, not sure on heads or gaskets yet(possibly the phase I's mentioned above) and some kind of boost (probably a vf11 with an safc for now).
option 1 should be alot easier and cheaper than option 2 but i'm gonna have to sit down and do some thinking...
redlegacygt
02-12-2009, 10:12 AM
my vote is for number 2!!! lol. its the same setup that i might be doing if i can get some time together. Jason and i had talked about it and he was able to find me 2.2t internal's for around $160. I'll hopefully be able to use the 2.2 bottom from my mom's old Legacy wagon we have sitting at the house, plus the 2.5 heads from my old motor, but they my be bad so i'll have to try a junkyard run.. Then all im using is the wrx turbo and intercooler which i have as well. it would be cool to have someone close the close to the same setup!hahaha
Huffer
02-12-2009, 10:41 AM
option 1. More reliable because you're going to beat this thing to death with mud and stones. In the rally world you want something easy to work on when you're in a ditch. A boosted engine with homemade parts of various vintage isn't likely to keep you rolling under all conditions.
If you went with thinner HGs you could bump the comp. up a couple of points and run some 89 octane for bigger bang.
strat81
02-12-2009, 09:10 PM
the car won't be seeing actual rally duty... merely rallyx.
from what i'm finding, the ej257 headgaskets are the thinnest out of the ej205, phase I and II ej25, ej22, and ej22t...
option 1 is gonna cost me less but but boost would be fun too.
Astin... i've got a line on the block already assembled with 2.2t internals for around $200. actually have a source for the dohc heads already tapped for the oil feed line too. just not sure i want to drop the $$ for the whole shebang...
(figure $200 for the block/internals, $245 for the heads, + cost of turbo, intercooler, up pipe, and manifold and an safc....)

unfortunately, I don't have the $$ to swing a motor build AND a turbo setup at this point...
impreza_GC8
02-18-2009, 03:42 PM
If you do the motor build now and turbo it later how are you going to drop the C/R? It would be a shame to have to pull the motor back out to lower the C/R to safe turbo levels. The C/R on my hybrid EJ22T/EJ25 engine is around 8:1
strat81
02-18-2009, 07:55 PM
if i turbo it later, it'll be on a low comp 2.2, not the 2.5.
If I can find the 2.5 at the junkyard this weekend, that is the way we'll go. If I cant' find one at the junkyard, it's up in the air. (being that the turbo setup won't be THAT much more to do as I doubt we'll find somebody selling a 2.5 long block for the $100 this particular yard charges)
to break it down...
2.2 block w/ 2.2t internals $200
2.5 dohc heads $245
td04 $85
apexi safc $130ish
+ the cost of misc. gaskets, head gaskets, timing belt, etc...
up pipe, manifold, downpipe, 2.2t injectors, top mount intercooler I already have a line on for free
or...
2.5 block $200ish
2.5 dohc heads $245
+ the cost of headgaskets, misc gaskets, timing belt, etc...
BUT, if I can find a 2.5 in the yard, i'm looking at $100 for block and heads. just need to change the gaskets and drop it in and i'm running 10.5:1

after doing some discussing with a good buddy of mine... it looks like the 2.2 turbo motor may be in my future afterall.
need to finalize a few things before i'm sure.
plans will be...
2.2e block with 2.2t internals
2.5 dohc heads
ej251 head gaskets
ej22t 370cc injectors
td04 with wrx manifold and ej22t up pipe
saab topmount
factory wrx turboback exhaust (it will be a bit short but will fit for the time being)
apexi s-afc
this setup should net me around 8.04:1 compression. probably run low boost for now.
again though, i've got one or two things to finalize before this motor gets the green light.

LOL, I'm waiting on money to do everything, lol. Quickl question, did you have to go to an Outback bumper beam when you switched bumper covers? I had to on my Impreza L when I went with Ver.5 bumper cover, thats why I ask. Thanks guy, sick looking "rallywagon". Not bad dd either!

we didn't switch bumper beams... we had to trim the bumper cover a bit in the grill area. i'm thinking though that if you wanted to run the outback grill, you'd probably have to do the bumper beam too.
we weren't that concerned about the visual appeal of the car so much as the large openings to mount a pair of hella 500's. :) this car will run grill-less

back from the dead...
car is still around and still on the bad motor. after some calculating and such, the frankenmotor was gonna be alot more money than we wanted to spend on a $200 car. (i was under the impression that i was getting an assembled block that just needed heads and dropped in but got a pile of parts and 2 block halves instead that needed machine work and assembly without all the nuts/bolts/etc)
on the lookout for a 2.5 to drop in to get the car up and running. may also be changing my focus a bit. after some sould searching, i kinda miss offroading in my old legacy. doing some visiting to an old subaru offroad site, i think i'm gonna focus more on mudding/4wheeling with this one.

the lift includes blocks to space the subframe down from the body (much like the outback's but obviously larger spacers). the legacy i've seen running this lift is clearing 30" all terrains. not sure how big i'm going to go though.

used 2.5 is in the back of the car...
my buddy is coming down today with the rollback to haul the car up to his well-equipped garage for us to swap motors. :)
hopefully it'll be in and running by the end of the week (mostly due to time constraints otherwise it would be done today)

I absolutly LOVE the color of your car. And the wagon with the lift is so cool it blows my mind. I was looking for a lift for my 99. Can you tell me where I can get my hands on a lift?
By the way your car is getting to be pretty sweet, I'm definatly going to be following your build. Great work man.

there is a company on ultimatesubaru.org that makes the lift. they are called high guys. i think their setup runs around $850 or so.

well... we've got a litte one on the way so plans have changed.
the car was gonna go up for sale but ended up with a swapped suspension and new wheels/tires (straight up trade with a friend) that just took most of the money this car needed out of the equation (tires are EXPENSIVE).
quick pic of the wagon in it's new iteration. more coming soon.

the child-on-the-way had more to do with this situation than anything. lift/bigger tires/etc is an unnecessary expense where as this was a trade straight up for a drop and practically new tires mounted on clean wrx wheels. it was a no-brainer. :)

what strut/spring combo did you end up with? I like the stance. looks good
strat81
03-24-2010, 06:52 PM
car is lowered on wrx struts and lowering springs. (they are red springs so possibly eibach's but they could also be ebay cheapies. it's unknown as my buddy bought his wrx with this setup already on it)

picking up a set of 1st gen turbo leggy sways to try on the wagon for the low low price of FREE!! bars should be 18mm f/r
also planning on swapping on my rs 6 spokes off the wrx with hankook k106's for a little autox action for shits and giggles. fender rolling/possible slight pull will be going along with the wheel change as i'm running 215/55/16's on the wrx.

Those wheels look hot on the wagon, especially with the outback front. I love that color, I kinda wish the outback two tone came in those colors from the factory. Also your car has made me want to both lift and lower mine.

it's been a few months since i've been to harry's... they normally have a good selection of outbacks and legacy's to choose from. hell, last time i had found a roof rackless bk with the rear spoiler that basically matched my old bk. (co-worker still has it so i know it wasn't my old one) i couldn't get the hatch open though to pull the spoiler as we were running short on time and the hatch wasn't cooperating.
since my last post, i've run 2 more autox events and have taken 2nd place at both in STX. it's been entertaining to say the least.

figured i'd post a short update...
i've run 6 events in the NEPA region and currently hold 1st place in points in STX for the year. not bad for a $200 car.
