My Old Legacy – 1997 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT w/ 4EAT
Bought in July 2007 with 168000KMs.

So, I've been meaning to make a thread for my car for a while now, and now I'm finally getting around to it. I've had this car since around July of '07, It's my first car, and I absolutely love it! I've been driving it to college daily while living at home, and it's been really great, especially in the winter. At just under 200,000KM, its still runs really well.

I'm broke as hell right now, so I've only been able to afford a couple small mods with leftover student loan. I'm graduating in May, so hopefully I can score a decent job and starting making the big bucks. :grin:

I definitely have been wanting to get tint, the only problem is I would have to replace 3 side windows. The previous owner managed to get rocks stuck somewhere in the door, which scratched the hell out of the windows when they put them up and down. :mad:

The rear diff was screwed when I bought it, but luckily the dealership payed for most of the repairs. I also had to spend over $1K on a timing belt change and a few other repairs. It runs great now though, and no HG problems. :smile:

I also forgot to mention that I recently got a CompuStar remote starter installed for the winter, man it's great!

Oh yeah, and that's a wheel from my mom's 2006 Legacy SE.

Yeah, the front right and rear left tires were mixed up, so that's why they're backwards in a couple pics. One day my dad was driving behind me and he noticed the rear tire treads were both in different directions.... :oops: They're properly set up now though.

Haha, yeah, the reason I bought my car is because my mom's turned out to be so great! We had never owned a Subaru before, but everyone in my family is in love now. I think I'll be sticking with Subaru for a long time.


How loud is the spt muffler?

It's not much louder than the stock muffler, but it gives a really nice deep sound, especially during deceleration. I'm really happy with it, and would really recommend getting one.

There was a bubble in the chrome when I got the grille, and it just flaked off when I drove in the rain :smt010
So I'm debating whether or not I should just scrap the chrome and paint it glossy black or something, or try and fix it, which I'm not sure how to do.
What do you guys think?

ya just got all the flaking paint off then sand, primer (2 coats), paint (3 or 4), clear (3 or 4 coats). i left the badge on and just taped over it and cut the edges

Well, I just love these cars so much, when I saw one for sale in the local classifieds, I went for it. I've been wanting a manual for a long time, and this one is almost perfect. Same color and year, only manual, lower mileage (145000KM), working A/C and no rust. It was bought from the original owner, who had maintained it really well judging by the stack of service invoices he gave me.

Also, I'm giving the old one to my dad to drive in the winter, so it'll be sticking around.

So far I love the manual, it's pretty easy to drive and its got a lot more kick than the auto. It even has a bit of the Subie rumble, which the old one did not.

I'll be paying the car off for another few months, but once that's done I plan to put some money into mods.

Wow, been a while since I’ve posted on here! The car has been through a lot in the 10 or so months I’ve had it.

First off, the head gaskets went at around 150000KMs in October. I only drove it for about 5 minutes max before noticing the temperature gauge was through the roof after some spirited driving, so there was no serious damage.

Me and my dad did the work, it cost about $1000 for the parts, not including the engine lift and stand we bought for the job which were another $500 or so.

Had the heads machined and replaced the head gaskets, head bolts, timing belt with all bearings/pulleys, water pump.

I sure was happy to have the old Legacy as a backup when this car was out of commission for a couple weeks!

After all that was sorted out, I figured it was safe to start doing some mods on the car. I started out with some UEL headers in February, wrapped in eBay header wrap. I also sprayed them with VHT Exhaust Manifold Paint to seal the spray a little better since the silicone spray I ordered was delayed. There probably wasn't much point to that, but you never know. Anyways, here are some pictures of that process:

Also, just a couple weeks ago I ordered a Weapon R Dragon Intake off eBay. Not a bad product, it's definitely a little on the cheap side but I did notice some power gains, especially at higher RPMs. It is, however, much louder than the stock intake and I can't even hear the nice purr of the exhaust when I step on it. Also, the filter looks extremely ricey, so I'll probably replace it in the near future. Make sure to replace the cheap silicone hose that comes with it as well if you get one, mine basically fell apart after one day. Pics:

I bought some rust paint today to touch up that pulley cover and any other rusty engine parts.

The engine hasn’t had any problems since the major work, but I have noticed some knocking through the clutch pedal, so we are pulling the engine this weekend or next to check things out. I’ve taken this opportunity to invest in some parts that will be much easier to install with the engine out:

After all this I’m hoping the car feels a lot tighter, and all the knocks and rattles I’ve been feeling through the clutch will disappear. It sure is going to be one busy weekend though!

This camera picks up a lot more treble than bass, so it doesn't sound quite accurate, but close if you crank your subwoofer.

So, finally got everything installed this weekend, and what a massive job it was! It took 9 hours on Saturday and about 5 on Sunday total, but we were working at a fairly relaxed pace and just two people.

Also resprayed my headers while they were off with some DEI Hi-Temp Silicone Spray. Almost time for some new wrap!

So in total, here's what was installed:
ACT Streetlite Lightweight Flywheel

Other work done:
Replaced fuel filter
Replaced PCV valve
Re-sprayed headers with DEI Hi-Temp Silicone Coating
Degreased coolant reservoir
Throttle body cleaned
Replaced throttle body gasket
Replaced oil separator cover gasket
Seafoam'd it

The verdict? This is no longer the same car, haha.

It feels much more solid all around, but with that comes a lot of NVH. The motor and transmission mounts definitely made the most difference, as I can now hear and feel every little thing transmitted through the drivetrain. Some of it is cool, like the gear and diff whine, other things like the loud grinding noise I hear under deceleration are not so cool. I'm still happy with that mod, and I'm sure I'll get used to the noise.

The clutch feels nice as well. It certainly grips well, but is still about the same to drive as the stock clutch. The lightweight flywheel means I have to rev a little more to take off, and I've stalled it twice already. The revs also drop really quickly with the clutch in, but when I take my foot off the gas on the highway, the revs drop much slower than before. I wont be able to fully feel the advantage until the clutch is broken in and I can really romp on it at high RPM. Only 700KM more to go! The only downside the clutch at the moment is the scraping/whirring noise I hear with the pedal depressed. I've posted on a couple forums but no one can tell me if this is normal or not. Also waiting for a response from Exedy USA regarding that.

The shifter bushings really smoothed the feeling of gear changes. I have yet to grind it, which used to happen quite often, and there is much less harshness overall. Coupled with the short throw shifter the sloppy feeling of the old stock shifter is completely gone.

I had to put my leaky old headers on to pass an E-test, so when I get the aftermarkets back on I think it will get rid of at least a few of the ugly noises.

Also, some other bad news, the AC compressor somehow got destroyed during all this and no longer spins. It also makes a horrific squealing noise when I turn it on. :smt010

Next mod: Stomung High Flow Cat and Resonated Mid-Pipe, probably in a few weeks! :smt006

Handling has improved slightly as well as power input, although low end torque has been reduced a bit. I found that out the hard way trying to pass someone in 5th going 80Km/h, it only took about 2 minutes....

I also had the exhaust leaks fixed and the car sounds like a beast with the intake/headers. I'll have to post another vid whenever I get the clutch broken in and I can rip on it a little.

That will be it for mods for at least a little while so I can pay off the other stuff.

Thanks for the comments. Loving the mods so much, and the car is running great. Lots of power and it sounds quite nice, especially cruising on the highway. Rev matching is a lot of fun too and much easier, so I take the curvy routes when I can to make the most of it. :cool:

please tell me you changed that plastic separator plate out for the new steel one...


if not, plan on going back in there to do that once it starts to leak (if it hasn't already), and maybe your clutch again since the new one has holes it it.

nice work though all-in-all. I just got done doing much of the same to my BD.

Could you be a little more specific? Not sure what you mean by plastic separator plate. I know some Subaru's have plastic plates for the engine mounts (or so I read), but mine were steel in the first place and there is no leaking involved with those as far as I know.

I'm also thinking of getting some new rims and tires, anyone have any suggestions? I'm probably going to spend between $1200-1500. Ideally I would get 2004 STI rims powder coated black, but that's a little too pricey!

Sounds like the shaft attached to the throw out bearing. The tranny itself might be on it's way out the door.

Definitely do-able. You can source 4 used wheels, clean 'em good and have new tires mounted all for just under $1500. Check the RS boards as well as Nastysock for take-offs.

On the 1st page, I posted a pic. I don't know why it's worth mentioning that it has holes and would need to be replaced though...in all of the pictures of Exedy clutch discs I've seen they have holes in them.

I figured it was just the lightweight flywheel combined with the harsh mounts. From what I've read LW flywheels cause a lot of virbration and noise, but it's hard to say just how much noise is normal.

Yeah really, I sure don't see them often. It even seems the 2nd gen wagon population is dying down. I sometimes see another black BD on the road though, get all excited, and then realize it's just my dad driving my old one! :lol:
