intermittant REAR wiper?

anyone done this? anyone know how? i really wish i had a way to make it intermittant, i really have no use for it to be on constantly, the spoiler back there makes most of the airflow slip right off the top of the car, not pushing the water down, its mostly the spray that gets tumbled around.

What exactly is the point of the rear wiper on the non-US spec sedans? The only time i could see using it is at a stop or slow traffic. At any speed the aerodynamics of a sedan keeps the rear glass pretty clear. Someone please elighten me

HHmmm that's interesting because i found a JDM Legacy that had a wiper on the back and it was in a junkyard was thinking about buying it to get rid off the brake light and to have one on the US legacy, although i am planning on putting on a V5 impreza wing too

the point of the wiper is stated in the first post. the spoiler does its job @ speed, deflects the air flatly off the roof, and the spray gets tumbled and swirled around and sticks to the rear window really well, and thats damn dangerous!!

I'd lke to bump this up, has anyone got an answer ? Its been raining here for the past 24 hours and that rear wiper is really annoying when its constantly on. Does any version Legacy have an intermittant rear wiper ?

Well, there's a control module that controls the intermittent on the front wipers. I bet its just some sort of computer chip that controlls the electrical signals to the wiper, and it could be scrapped from a junked Legacy/Impreza/andothersubaru and put in to control the rear wiper.

That's the basic principal, but I don't know where the wiring is, I haven't looked at my FSMs yet ;)

Sometimes the answer is sitting right in front of you ! I still own my '91 LS Wagon, I just took a peak and it has the rear intermittant wiper option. The rear wiper motor was siezed when I bought it so I've never even thought about it till now.

I have no clue what to look for. If someone can walk me through the process I'll start swapping over the parts from the '91 to the '97.

Looking in the JDM FSM it seems that the sedans did not have rear intermittent wipers since there is no connector for the intermittent unit in the wiring diagram. (from 97.9 Kouki electrical manual) I've never been in a BD Legacy so I can't confirm.

The BG wagon intermittent wiper control unit should be located on the right side of the cargo area somewhere behind the wheel well (towards the back of the car). It should have an 8 pin connector. I'm not sure if the BF wagon is the same or not.
Normally, when you are seeking out (working) control units you can just keep turning on and off the accessory and listen for a relay inside the control unit clicking. In this case just set the wiper to the fasest intermittent speed (proveded it DOES have a relay...I haven't checked) and listen for the clicking.

It is not uncommon, as in the case of the BD/BG front wipers, to have the intermittent control built into the combination switch on the steering column. If it were that way with the rear wipers, for example, swapping to intermittent wipers would only require replacing the combination switch.

This is quite an interesting post. My friend would have like to read because he was also planning about of a rear wiper on his car. I think he'll get some ideas once he read this so he can plan what to do on that rear wiper. Thanks for sharing this.

I dont get the point of the Intermittent setting, When i drive with any car i never use the wipers on at all times. I use the wipers only when i feel the need. (pull back arm for single wipe kind of thing) I also do this in my work car, the rear wiper i flick on, let it go one round and flick it back of again.

But thats just me, im sort of a control freak on the movingparts :P

well I just looked at all of my wiper stalks,
I don't think that the rear has intermittent built in.

stalk instock:

GM 'L' no intermittent, no rear
BD 'GT' intermittent, no rear
BK 'L' no intermittent, rear(not intermittent)
BD5 'RS' intermittent, rear(not intermittent)
BK 'GT' intermittent, rear((not intermittent)

There are aftermarket modules out there to allow people to add intermittant wiper function to vehicles that don't come with them from the factory. I don't see why you couldn't use one of those modules on the rear wiper, it works basically the same as the front wipers.
