The impreza short ram intake tube will fit in my 98 legacy outback? Slight modification? It looks the same as the guy who started this thread and he just had to do a couple of things with the hoses. Is that all i'll need to do?
Thanks

Alright! Just finished with the install on my ebay intake. Looks clean and sleek. Went for a drive and noticed some more noise, which I like. Not really any kind of performance gains though. People keep saying that after they reset the ECU they notice gains. How do I reset the ECU? And why does that make performance gains suddenly appear?
Thanks!

remove the battery terminal, press brakes or turn on headlights to remove any residual charge, let sit for an hour or so, put battery terminal back.

Okay thanks. And what is resetting the ECU supposed to do?

03-13-2010, 07:14 PM
resetting the ECU....wait for it....resets the ECU!
the ECU is the engine computer.
when you reset the ECU it goes back to stock settings, as opposed to the variables it learns thru your driving styles, elevation, fuel, etc etc etc etc.

Correct... and something with Subaru but yeah you have to leave it disconnected for a hour or longer to reset the ECU. I tried it all turning lights on, pressing horn, brake,... let it sit for 20min and reconnected. Still had a check light for my headers and O2. Did it again, let it sit for a 2 hours and fixed my check light(this was before i purchased my scanner to reset check light and scan my car)

just put it on. i didnt need the t connector or the extra hose! i found that if you have a heat gun, the blue hoses go on the larger factory fittings much easier. the butt dyno test says wwwwwwwweeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

so, before i put my intake on, my cel was on. i got some throttle body cleaner and a can of maf sensor cleaner. when i got everything hooked back up, my cel was not on, and has not come back on. fingers are crossed hoping that it does not come back on.

Looks good and your maf probably wasn't getting a good reading and that's why the cel came on.

how well do these fit on a be/bh?

Do I only need to remove the red one? Or both?

i believe just the red is fine. then hold the brakes or something to completely drain any power left.
so i just got that ebay intake today. won't get a chance to put it on until the weekend. but at first glance i can see that it has outlets for three vacuum hoses. BH only has two vacuum hoses and a sensor of some type. so i plan on cutting off the third outlet and then create a hole there, to put in the sensor. ill get some pics in this wkend

has anyone had issuses with the iacv when doing this mod? because i installed the injen intake and the bung for my iacv was thinner than the hose going to the iacv and it feel like it wants to stumble sometimes at low rpms.

Hey guys, my MAF is connected at the throttle and not on the hose before the air cleaner as yours. I'm thinking of buying an intake or building one myself, and my question is do i need to move the MAF at front of the hose or leave it as is ?

Yeah, I've seen that issue before. I know some people weld a new wider flange to the ones with smaller flanges. Other than that, I'm not sure there's a fix.

If your air cleaner is right at the throttle body like the BE/BH Legacys, you could maybe do something like this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/10/intake-1.jpg
It's hard to tell though, I've never heard of a BD/BG/BK with the MAF anywhere but it's USDM location except on turbo models.

Mark, why did you keep the air cleaner anyway? I thought that whole point of this mod is to remove the air cleaner and to add a small cone type filter..

That's not my car, but unless you're running a highly modified application, practical science says that the air boxes aren't really a chokepoint for flow. Does your car have an airbox right there like the picture above?

As you can see on the photo i made the intake a little shorter by removing some parts of it

That one will require an extension to make it work with the airbox, FYI. The others listed fit much better.

usually you have to search under impreza RS to find them. A quick search brought me to this, it is the cheapest one that I could find:

The one I got on eBay for like $30 has the opening for the IAC so I didn't have to put a hole in the coupler. Picture is on here somewhere

In similar years, yes (for the most part). Up till 98 they were exactly the same. 99 was a hybrid year where intake systems were changed (some had the airbox above the TB with a MAP sensor instead of a MAF and the filter box against the fender). From '00 on, the EJ25 was different than the older EJ22s. The 99+ EJ22s were a bit different as well.
The eBay intake we're all talking about is for the 90-98 models with the airbox against the fender.

Yea I ended up with that intermediate period in 99 where parts from a phase1 and phase2 dont match >.< of couse the intake didnt come with the motor and it feels like the 98 stock intake is slightly too small diameter to match the 99 tb. Any idea what intake to look for?

I did this pretty cheap on my 01. Just bought a piece of aluminum intercooler piping off ebay with a 90 bend. then I used a 90 degree coupler to attach it to the airbox. trimmed off a couple inches and it lined up perfectly with an existing hole in the engine bay. To hold it I bent up a piece of metal and relocated one of the mounts for the original intake, its held on with another coupler.
theres a picture in my for sale thread.
