so i have absolutely no refrigerant in my ac system right now, and i dont use my ac anway, so i was wondering what i would have to do for an ac delete? i know it will give me a few added HP, and i can get rid of the pump, but do i need a blank pulley to take its spot or is it just as simple as take the pump and lines and condenser out and get a smaller belt? i searched around the forum for a while but havent found anything on how to. thanks.

You can just disconnect the belt, and remove the AC unit itself. Be careful of the lines, there may still be pressure in them and venting R134a to atmosphere is actually a federal offense.

You won't gain any HP because when it's not on, it's not turning. You will lose about 30lbs from the front end.

okay. i just noticed that the ac pump had its own belt... if i take that belt off, would leaving just one belt on the crank pulley be bad for anything? because there are supposed to be 2 obviously... also, i noticed the low side hardline leads up to the firewall and makes a connection to something at the firewall and looks like it goes through and continues inside the car. could i just unscrew the line from this fitting in the firewall and leave it at that, or is there more inside the cab of the car that i would have to take out? thanks again for the help.

There's a lot of stuff going on behind the firewall as well.
You can take the belt off the AC. The crank pulley will run with or without belts attached.

Here's a DIY:

Yeah there's the evaporator core which is how the air blowing through gets cold.

wow, thanks for the DIY link huffer.
so i dont have to remove the evaporator then? because that is what it sounds like to me...
and is it true that my windshield will fog up all the time if i pull my ac system out? has anyone done this before, can you tell me if this is correct?

The Defrost setting automatically turns on your AC as well, the dry air helps defrost the windshield more quickly. Notice how the defroster button is yellow, but the rest are green.

I have deleted A/C in my wagon. The pulley is fine with the belt removed. The lines that pass through the firewall can be disconnected and taped over. The condensor and associated lines can be removed. I'd say you lose a significant amount of weight off the front. I'm considering removing all the junk behind the firewall too just for added weight savings. In certain temperatures/humidity the windshield is going to fog and its harder to make it go away because you can't turn on the A/C. Usually rolling the windows down a bit helps.

ohhh, thats why it is orange. i like the feet heat though, so i use the windshield defroster/feet heat button, not the defroster button, and i dont have any problems with fog... is the ac turned on with this button too?

thanks. about how long did this take you? i am thinking about doing it tomorrow if we dont get slammed with snow like we are supposed to, but i dont have a garage, so i have to do it outside :-( and i need light to do it. it doesnt look like it should take that long though...

thanks. about how long did this take you?
I bought the car with the A/C deleted. The guy I bought it from gave me several huge boxes of parts. I actually have two A/C compressors in addition to all the lines and hoses and whatnot. Its all in storage.

You're probably right. I'm just keeping them because I have an RS and my mom has an Outback. I'll have spare parts in case I ever need them. That said though, what do A/C compressors go for on the mean streets of the Subaru forums?

i did it!
it was snowing outside but i just said screw it and went ahead and started. it took me about two hours total, but that was only because my hanes manual doesnt go over very well how to take the compressor off. other than that, it was very simple and easy. i wanted to do a DIY write up for this, but i forgot to take pictures until i was done, and what kind of write up would it be with no pictures?
now, instead of having an ac that doesnt work in my car, i have an ac that doesnt work in my shed...
this is everything i took out

i would say all together, it weighed probably 15 punds, but that is just a rough guess.
i didnt take out the condensor yet, but will be doing that soon.

what no evap? you didn't take off your dash :-p Thats the true a/c delete.

Congrats on the A/C delete. another useless item removed from the legacy!

I removed my A/C when I first bought my car.. It was seized so no point in replacing. I have never had a problem with fogging windows, only in the winter when I finish playing hockey and sit in my car for the first few mins.. Sweat = fog..

And your never going to roll up your windows all the way in the summer.. I promise you this!

:-D good stuff

haha, yeah i didnt feel like working for 5 hours to take out the evap, so i just taped over the holes where the hardlines connect to it.
i never used my ac anyways. i consider my windows a four speed ac...
