Fastest your car has gone?

I was up really late one night, in the middle of nowhere, on a steep, long hill, with time to kill. So, I decided to see how fast I could get my car going. Just remember, I can see in MILES in every direciton, nobody around.

I got my little NA 2.5 to pull the car right up to the speed limiter at 145, and I have the wrong size tires on (205 65HR15 vs 205 60HR15), so my actual speed was about 152 mph.

Anyone removed the speed limiter from their car, and exceeded 150 mph?

Please don't complain at me about my lack of judgement, I've taken this car up to 80 mph in deep snow with massive drop offs to either side, gone 120 mph on gravel/dirt, and have beat on this car. I know my limits very well.

Yeah I've hit 109 in my car before, the autos on the 2.2's have a limiter at 112 I've heard though so I was almost at my max.

Above 100....stopped paying attention to the gauges and kept the eyes on the road.....I think its a worthy excuse!

It was in the middle of the day, Interstate 89 (in Vermont, northbound) between exits 2 & 3 or 3 & 4...there is one real nice straight with a slight descent. in the rain. Just got the car back from having it in the body shop for 2.5 months. Needed to make up some quality bonding time! :lol:

Fastest on tarmac, was right at 134 mph. The old girl still felt strong at this point too but was slowly building speed after about 128 mph and I got nervous and shut it down.

This was on I-495/I-270 at about 4 am. 4-5 lanes wide and hardly a car anywhere. My buddy was acting tough in his girlfriends Tercel or some crap, so I let him roll by at about 85 mph (I was doing maybe 70 mph) and gave him about an 1/8th mile. I dropped the hammer then and passed him at about 115 mph while he was doing about 95 mph. HE said I just sounded like a jet flying by. Hehehe, it was great.

Fastest on gravel, just over 100 mph. This is with 2 other BC turbos close behind me on one of the back ass roads around my house, this summer after the shootout. That was far more fun. :twisted:

The speed limiter is at 150, not at 115. :?

On that same hill, I'm areo and power limited to 120 going the opposite way. :p Some day, when I get my supercharger installed, I hope to hit the fuel cutoff going up that hill as well as down. ;)

I certainly see your point there. But, the fact is, does it make that much difference if you're going 120 mph or 55 when an elk steps out infront of you? At 150 mph, your chances of living through hitting a deer is pretty much the same as your chances of hitting a deer at 75.

When I did my high speed run, there were fenced fields to either side of the road, I could see everything in all directions. I could see literelly for miles, and if a deer had come from the woods, it would have to be going 140 mph in order to get infront of me in time for me to hit it.

Here's something to be angry about. I actually hit a dog once, in down town. I was going 30 mph in a 30 zone, and had two friends in the car. It was a one way street with 4 lanes. I was in the left most lane, slightly behind a car one lane to my right. This dog ran out into the road, right past the back of the other car. I didn't even see the dog with how fast it was going and with the other car obsuring it. It went from the right side, and went under my left tires. I went around the block, and pulled in to the parking lot.

There were 5 guys, including the dog's owner. They were all very, very high, reeking of mary jane. Two of them were balling their eyes out, one was cussing up a storm. The dog's owner had it wrapped in a towel, my tires had gone over the middle of the dog, shattering ribs and puncturing ribs. This guy was so messed up, he literelly blew into the dog's mouth and nose until it's eyes would open, it would bubble, you could actually hear the bubbling in it's lungs, then it would die again. Then he would repeat. My friends and I forced this guy into the car, and we drove to 4 vets, and they were all closed. We drove all over town. At the fifth vet, the guy told us to just go home and he'd walk home (not far from where we actually hit the dog).

So yeah, I've never hit an animal again, nor do I ever want to. Nor do I do high speed jumps (there's pleanty of places here, you can go down a hill, get about 120 mph of speed, go up a hill, hit the crest, and get anywhere from 2 to 30 feet of air), high speed runs, or street racing.

I can agree with Sha_Zapple (Hypocrite, yes) on that, because I don't think people realize how little traction they have when they get up to 100mph+

You have something like an inch of tread on all four wheels when you're going that fast...not exactly conducive for doing anything other than going straight...

The only that bothers me about your statement Lee, is that at any point, on any day, you could get t-boned in any intersection, at any speed. You could be doing 55 and have a blow out and get sucked under a big rig. Driving at slower speeds doesn't mean you're safe. Everytime you get in your car and turn the key, you're playing with your life.

I was watching a show once on the German Autobon (sp?) and there was this guy with a Bently, or something like that, and he was talking about how he would generally drive at around 150-175 mph (when speed restrictions were lifted) and that he was a safer driver at that speed then at lower speeds. His point was that at that speed his attention was souly on the road. He wasn't talking on the phone or changing the cd in the cd player, ect...

I thought this was a good point. When driving at slower speed people get complacent. They don't pay attention. When driving at 100+ mph I gaurantee that their attention is glued to the road.

Now, I do think there are people that shouldn't drive more then say...35 mph. There are others that probably shouldn't drive at all. I also think it's irresponsible to drive at high speeds in traffic. But if it's 4 am and you're on a 5 lane freeway without any traffic, then I don't see the problem with letting the 'ol girl stretch her legs a bit. :wink:

Besides, if you're doing a 100+ mph and a deer jumps out, or you have a blow out and you crash and burn, it's your own damn fault. Live fast, die young.

Now if you're doing a 100+ mph and you hit a family of 5 out for a drive in their new minivan then yes, that was wrong and there's probably not a punishment severe enough to make it right, even death.

But how do you feel about driving at fast speeds on a closed road course? Your chances of mechanical failure or an animal jumping out in front of you is just as high.

I don't exceed 75mph anymore. Too many cops, can't risk getting pulled over, and my suspension can't cope with hitting a pothole at that speed. Factor in crappy all-season OEM type tires... and if I go over 60mph I'm a much higher risk to others on the road.

not as much as most other cars...there's a lot more weight than most cars, and the underbody of the car is more smooth than most I've seen also.

As to what Matt was saying, you shouldn't be speeding in traffic on the freeway (or anywhere) but you also shouldn't be going slower than the traffic flow. That's dangerous, and I see way to many old farmers in their 86 F-150's thinking its OK, and safe, to do 45 in a 65 :roll:

Sure theres everyday risk, but the faster you go, the less reaction time you have, and the risk grows exponentially.
I agree with you if something happens at that high of speed its all your damn fault, so dont expect me to feel bad when something does go wrong. I just dont want to see a "hey everyone Im dead cause I was going too fast" thread

Closed road course is different. Semi controlled conditions and most the time your not doing 145mph or even close to that.

btw, my cousin was doing 120-130km/h (75-80mph), usual highway speed, when he caught the shoulder and overcorrected.

No one has explained WHY then need to go this fast. Does it make your wang bigger saying youve gone 100+ :lol:

But I've only ever gone over 100 once, and I don't really feel like doing it again, considering how crappy the slightest jiggle in the road felt...

I was somewhere north of Crater Lake, actually. Top of a big hill.

BTW, I wouldn't recommend going very fast with flat spotted tires, or unbalanced tires. Espeicall retreads, or high milage tires. I've seen trucks on the road where the rear wheels were literlly bouncing as the car drove due to the lack of balance. :(

The slow driver issue wouldnt be a problem if we held true to the law of passing (only on the left side) but the law here doesnt care about it unlike in Europe were people treat driving totally different and obay pretty much every law for the road ways

Anytime I do over 90 I am 100% focused on the road, I dont have the radio on, cell phone is in my pocket and my eyes are on the road. I think I am a safer driver when I am going faster. When I drive legally I'm always looking at other cars or singing or something other than what I should be doing. Its almost impossible to survive a crash above 70, normal highway speeds so when you're driving down the highway your chances of dying are just as high as mine when I'm doing 120 on a wide open country road. BTW I've had my moms 99 GT (auto) at 116 and my 95 L (5spd) at 137, I cant really explain how, the dealership says that I've done something to confuse my ECU so I think that has something to do with it.

Being a 100% focus at any speed really won't guarantee not getting in an accident. One of my friends was doing 80 mph on I-95 and was cut off. He went nose first into the barrier. Spun the car and flipped it upside down. Long story short, he came out with a broken arm. My nephew on the same highway doing around 70-75 hit a piece of a tire in the road and barrel rolled his car and took out a light post. Again long story short he cam out with a few scratches. Anything can happen, they were the lucky ones. There's a risk at driving high speeds. Can I see I don't do it? no I had my GT up to where HFS devil had his, Will I do it again yes. Being 100% focus can still get you into trouble. Just everyone be safe when you drive, I don't want to have to dedicate a section to members dying. So on a happier note Mark is doing an STi swap! since were getting sorta off topic, today i was coming home from school and theres an intersection thats sometimes tricky to go left so i saw my gap and took it along with the car infront of me well i guess i got a little close to her and she got pissed and flicked me off, i didnt really mind but she starts being a real bitch about it and slows way down, were in a school zone now so i really didnt want to pass her and get busted for a bunch of different charges so i wait, we turn onto a one lane two way road(theres prolly a better way to say that) anyways i go to pass her cause shes still doing 10 under and she trys to hit me but shes in a suv so i quickly get passed then she trys to speed up and hit me so i speed up and now were doing about 70 in a 25 and approaching turns and she backs down and i get away so that was my speeding for the day lol sorry it was so long but oh well

Road rage... Heh. People try to t-bone me when I drive Dad's bright red T100 all the time, and I'm usually a pretty laid back driver.

I'm usually 80% focused on the road, no matter what road it is. I focus about the same when I'm tearing down logging roads, I have the music on, but not loud, singing along. When I'm in 6 inch deep snow, or going above 65, I'm paying attention 100% though.
