ok so im buying a 95(=96 usdm) 4door WRX rhd from a buddy of mine for $1000.. Now it was a Prova(google it) race car in japan. it has no motor no front brakes and no drivetrain. but it does come with some interior and some japanese coilovers that ive never heard of. it also has no title..what i want to know is if there is a way besides VIN swapping(bad and illegal) to get it registered and street legal. i talked to a cop and he said he doesnt see why they wouldnt give it a title. but it wont be street legal cause it wont pass emissions.. but if anything it will be a track car.

my plans for it are:
EJ20R w/ 5spd
STi brembos
legacy VLSD rear
5x114 lug conversion
axis halo wheels 18x9.5
cusco roll cage

titles are hard to get to beginwith. but maybe ive done it before for a non-us car. involve lots of paperwork, time, and money plus getting the car inspected by a federal dot inspector. but just use it as a track car. and also dont get a cusco cage. they a basicly show cages. and if you roll the car the way there set up they might save you some but the sheer the metal there attached to. i reccomend getting a cage made by a profesional cage maker and it cost about the same as a cusco cage

sorry but are you saying you despiratly need money trying to sell you turbo? and you buy a new car?

i have money now, back then when my car was on the line i made the payment. but i dont need the turbo kit thats why i dropped the price so low its just taking up space..also i havent recieved this wrx yet either. but i just wanted to know how hard it would be to get this car street legal so i could drive it but if its a hassle that isnt worth it then i wanted to know not to get my hopes up.. this is a rolling chassis and is very cheap for its race history..

dude said give him $250 and come pick up the car. so next week il be going to look at/pick up the car.
please take note that this will be a project car and wont be complete for a long time.

and im not really paying attention to myself type so if i just rambled on ,sorry.

You have to contact the DMV/BMV for whatever state you're in to find out how to register a car that was an import.
It'll still have a VIN#, just not one that was registered with the feds (most likely).

Personally, I would take that $250 and find a clean, RUNNING, vehicle to turn into a track car. Doesn't matter if it's a Prova vehicle or not - Prova only modify the engine + drivetrain, and exterior. If this is just a shell, it's not Prova anymore. It's just an Impreza.

If you're serious about a track car, how about you do some research on what is/isn't allowed for the class you will be running, plan a build (the WHOLE build, before you buy even a single part) and stop trying to skimp on a safety item. Things that can save your life are the #1 thing you shouldn't be going cheap on. Go to a race shop and have them make you a nice roll cage based on the class you will be running.

+1000000000000000000000 on this.

I don't know how many people that have to get something switched, removed, adjusted or just gave up after showing up for tech inspection only to turn around and go home. All your time, money and energy shouldn't be tossed on someone else's opinion on parts. A proper build usually takes more time on the drawing table then in the garage. Safety being top priority, so you can keep returning to the track and enjoying yourself.

Do it once, so you don't have to do it again. :smt023

^ Sad but true. Make sure you don't get too enamored with this car's race history and make a decision based solely on that.
I'd like to see some pics of this car.

I didn't tell you to buy a car for $250. I said take that $250 and put it toward a clean running vehicle.

I'm sorry but I think this is a bad idea. Your talking about building an entire race car and your riding on cut springs. I'm not trying to come off as a jerk but I would prioritize your needs/ desires before going out and buying another vehicle. Just my .02

Hey dude,
Not to pop ur balloon, but how can you verify that this thing is legit? as in a PROVA race car? To me it looks like imported RHD GC impreza shell with the guts ripped out and was in it's way to be prep'ed for racing. The sticker on the side doesn't prove anything. I can get that sticker made and put on my car too.

I'm not here to kill ur dreams and plans. I just want to make sure that a fellow SLi'er is not getting ripped off.

Does he have any paper work that proves the identity of this car?

As far as registering, VIN swap is probably the easiest. Just buy a rusted up 93 impreza FWD and swap out the VIN, but if it's going to be a track car ONLY then who needs to register it if most of its life is going to be at the track, in ur drive way or on a trailer. ya know?

my .02

LOL i just got off the phone with the guy price got bumped up to $1500 because hes throwing in spats/sideskirts/apexi edfc thing/sti grill/ blitz fmic kit/ and a few other lil things. WOOO!!
You are excited the price got higher? The spats and sideskirts are attached to the car, its a scam to yank em and try to sell them separate. APEX'i EDFC? What the hell is that? Do you mean S-AFC? If so you can find one of those for $50-$100 or just get a good EMS and not use the AFC. FMIC? Cool I guess but you don't even have an engine so what rush are you in for an FMIC? The STI grill in that year looks identical to the USDM so you're getting swindled there. If he says the grill is different then he is trying to sell you a Ver5 or Ver6 grill which doesn't match the car year and you can get on your own for $100 at a later date. Sounds like you're in a rush to spend money you probably don't have.

its not a scam..i know the guy on a personal level(hes even in my top 8 on myspace lol). he has the parts laying around.. and the sti grill he is giving me for some junk i have laying around that he needs for his wrx.. yes S-AFC i got confused, blitz fmic kit is for the motor im buying for this car as well. and as for it being legit i was there for the tear down.. took out and sold the roll cage, motor, brakes, seats. all of which said prova all over it.. i wouldnt be this excited over a car that has no proof of racing history. and i think still im not being ripped off. its clean ,no rust, straight chassis, for $1500 its still lower then his asking price for anyone else to buy it.

so i just found out that this isnt a APEX'i S-AFC its a APEX'i power FC but now i have to track down the original motor.. unless you can bypass this standalone thing for another motor

Geez- in colorado you can get a fully running impreza just like that with a motor, with headlights, with interior in tact, etc...etc...etc.... for less than $1500.

Whatever floats your boat but A) you won't get the car registered legit because it is a japanese imported car, and there are very few japanese performance cars that can be imported for street use.

You have a nice start on your wagon. I'd ruther spend the money on that, like painting the hood and trunk. Heck, atleast it's already registered and ready to go. But your money...

PowerFC's IIRC they are plug n play, if not i have a harness you can have mine for free (Just pay shipping)

But if youre goin to run a USDM motor you will need a USDM harness because pre 1999 JDM subaru's (or maybe 2000, not sure) uses OBD1 and USDm's are OBD2 but i am 100% sure that yours is OBD1

If the harness in their has a powerFC connected to it why not get a EJ20G swap from Jhot? it comes with everything you need to have the car running except a rear diff.

BTW what is a prova racing car doing with Apexi Engine management

xXGTBspecXx
02-13-2009, 10:53 AM
i dk know what prova does with a apexi EM maybe they like it? maybe to them this was a budget build. im buying a motor from Jhot but i dont know if i want a single or twin turbo motor.. and hold on to that harness i might need it. thanks subba

PS still looking for a MAF that will work for you.

if its so JDM why are the taillights USDM?

subba
02-13-2009, 11:19 AM
i already got a maf, finally! and i got a Q45 from shane to experiment with.

if you have a choice between single or twin, go single, use the twin as a last resort.

xXGTBspecXx
02-13-2009, 11:23 AM
cool... yea i was thinkin single would be easier.. now with it being RHD n all on the signle turbo motors is the turbo on the (JDM) drivers side or the pass side?

subba
02-13-2009, 11:49 AM
The car is JDm no matter how you put it lol

But! Prova makes and tune subaru ECU's

another thing to be prepared for, a cusco Roll cage pwns your pockets.

Well liz and I went and picked the car up sunday and it had a diff controller in it so I'm guessing this is a ver 4 sti ? I'll be taking pictures of it when I go back to my parents house next weekend but its finally mine and all the parts he gave me is well worth the 1500 I'm spending on it. Woohoo
