View Full Version : Port and Polish?

My engine troubles continue, and I may end up having my mechanic rebuild my original EJ25 and put that back in my '98 Leggy. (This is because my replacement engine developed a rod knock).
He offered that he could port and polish it for me as well for a discount from the $500 or so he normally charges to do it.
My question is: What kind of benefits/disadvantages are there to going through with this, aside from the price tag? I understand that you can actually lose hp from a poorly done job, but I have faith in his abilities and his background, so that is not a huge concern to me. I'm more concerned with fuel economy changes, powerband changes, etc.
Thanks for the info and advice,
Phil

ask him to "port match" your intake manifold too its helps get rid of the turbulence the air created when it goes by the gasket between the intake manifold and head. mine are done and theres a noticable power gain.

pnp what part? The Heads? The intake manifold? TB? exhaust manifold? The heads are the biggy, but more aggressive cams would really make use of it.

It would be the heads from what I understand, but I will ask him to match it as well, although I think he would probably plan on it anyways, not sure though.
Thanks
And yeah, Pat, that knock got worse. He pulled the engine out last night and there was a ton on metal in the oil pan, even though none would come up on the dip stick.

Is he going to do a valve job as well? May I add that since the heads are going to get work done, the cams are going to have to come out too...good time to get some regrinds from Delta

It was a JDM Import through RisingSunEngines.com
There are so many things I'd like to do to it, but right now, my $5100 vehicle has become a $10,000 with all the repairs and additions thus far, and I just need it to work. The only reason I'm considering the P&P anyways is because he said he can rebuild the engine and P&P it for about what I spent on the JDM Engine in the first place.
Now that RSE is going to have to rebuild it anyways, I am going to try to use that as justification for a refund because if I'm now spending $2k on a rebuild instead of a replacement, which was my original intent, I want the rebuild done by a Subaru specialist, not by a Japanese product importer.
We'll see what happens though, I have a feeling they are going to try to cheap me out of a refund.

ah that sucks man, its one of the risks you take when you buy any jdm engine unfortunately. Hopefully you can salvage it without too much $$$.

Is there a reason you'd go with Matt over Nate? Just out of curiosity.

Okay, good, lol. You had me concerned. I have been going through Nate for all the work I've had done to the vehicle thus far, and I am pretty confident in his skill, ability and knowledge. If I'm going to get the work done, I'll almost definitely go through him. Thanks for the offer though.
