About to buy a Legacy GT 03 - Sportshift?

Hey guys after more than 6 months witout a Legacy i'm about to buy a BE. The car I'll most likely buy is 03 GT and I was wondering if any member still have access to Carfax. I remember seeing someone who was kind enough to run the search for some fellas SL-i.ers. Well here's the VIN number if someone can run the search for me: not needed anymore.

Also any input on the automatic sportshift transmission? It seems like I can't find any 5spd at this moment so I was wondering how you guys like the sportshift so far? I gave the car a little testing today but I wasn't really able to test the shifting all the way I'd have like.

sportshift is ok. make the shift point more sporty. but the manuel mode had long shift times for some reason and i didnt like it. but its alot better the auto kickdown auto have. if you want to shift down a gear.

yeah that's the impression I had trying the transmission it's kinda slow to react when i shifted up but the downshifting felt nice.

Was the SS available on the 2003's?

My wife's Outback has the SS and at first I thought it was just a gimmick - every car I had owned up to my Leg was a manual, so I thought it was kind of lame. The more I have used it, the more I like it. The shifts aren't too bad for speed, but they are really smooth. Though it does feel weird not doing a throttle lift during the shift. Also, the linear shift pattern might seem odd at first for those who do not drive bikes.

The 5EAT itself is much better than the 4EAT, even out of the SS mode. And if you don't feel like shifting, and don't feel like bogging around in the full auto regular mode, you can put it into sport mode for better gear-holding.

2003 still has the 4eat, though available with the sportshift on GT models. I had one with the sportshift, I autocrossed it and took it to track days and it worked just fine. Nice as a DD.

Well I bought the 03 GT. I'm almost getting used to the 4EAT sportshift transmission but I'm already missing the stick. It is the exact model/year/color I was looking for minus the automatic transmission but after considering the price (5900$CDN - 3k under similar cars if compared to local market). The Legacy has 100k miles (160k KMs) on it. It just need new brakes/pads at 4 wheels.

I might try to sell it back after a year or 2 but I'm already considering may be an engine/transmission swap in the future.

My first car was a Legacy sedan 91 turbo 5-spd, sold my 98 GT sedan 5-spd like 8 months ago, so after 1st and 2nd gen, long & strong liviving to 3rd gen! :smt023
