Alright I'm looking to go the cheap and not as good way to get some sound and slightly better gas mileage from my car. I was wondering if I could just take the muffler off at the flange, and put it back on as needed. I know of the problems of exhaust gases entering the vehicle, I have no problem with the police... because there are none where I live.

also the problems of heating up your gas tank almost directly.... If you're going to go this route, why not cut the muffler off and straight pipe it?

FWIW, mufflerless sounds horrible. There's a guy here in town with a straight pipe in place of his muffler on his 2.2liter impreza outback... Not so good...

I agree mufflerless does not sound good. When I first got my bk I took off the axleback and it sounded badass for a couple of days and then I realized that it sounded terrible when I had someone drive by me in the car. Spend the money on a cat back, You will be much happier.

if you go no muffler, you do need to make a turndown to attach to the flange. straight off the pipe will melt the CV joint back there... ask me how I know...

Ive got a Flowmaster that fits our cars (really made for impreza sedan) which sounds great.

If you're going on the cheap just find a cheap fart cannon and get any exhaust shop to fab you up an axelback.

And I agree with PWT, straight pipe doesn't sound so good.

If your looking for cheap and easily fixable, remove the pre-muffler flange gasket and put a couple s/s washers in between the flanges. actually sounds pretty good, and fully tunable by adding/removing washers.

I would remove the CAT not the muffler, have a shop fab you up a cat delet pipe

and if you want better sound get a cheap muffler and have the shop weld that up as well I would suggest a flowmaster/magnaflow or on the cheap an ebay can

you could also get the SPT alxe back but thats not really cheap

N/A Subie + Axle Back Delete sounds horrible

^^ thats because the turbo acts like a muffler also.

My friends GL wagon (with an ej22 ) has Borla knock offs, and the stock midpipe fom my GT and that is it. It sounds AWESOME! But if you have a stock hearder, it'll sound terrible

Removing a cat just adds more sound. There's no power gain unless youre running a serious cam and headwork, and that's still probably marginal.

In fact a turbo fits the legal definition of a muffler - you should not get a ticket for no muffler when you have a turbo. The SRT-4 comes from the factory with no muffler - the turbo qualifies.

isnt it ragetek that makes the aftermarket streight pipe exaust for SRT-4's that sounds like a diesel truck?
