uh... i need help.. i messed up something. idk what it is

i went playing in the mud yesterday(see avatar for details)
and after around 20 minutes i left.. upon leaving i hear this metal clunking noise that kind of jerks the car when i turn a sharp right (not aggressive driving, just 90* turns and such..)

when i stopped at work today, i pulled too far into the lane so then i put it in reverse and it sounds like a rock or something is banging around in my transmission or something.. i out it in park and it kept rolling (doesnt do that still)

i put it in N sitting still and the clunking subsides a bit but when i put it in drive and foot the brake, the clunking gets loud then everyonce in a while a snapping noise is heard but the clunking goes away for the most part when im moving until i start slowing down..


its not coming from the engine, when it first was heard it sounded like it was on the right side of the car ( i thought suspension) but now it sounds like under the engine... im scared, nothing visibally looks loose or broken..

but there is a jerky stutter every once in a while when i gas from a stop... other times a short hesitation

I have a similar noise, but it seems to not be as bad. Is it ONLY when you make right turns and are depressing the accelerator? Im pretty sure its the cv axle, however I went to go get it looked at and the guys said all the cv boots were fine.. and they all are.

It seems to not make the noise nearly as much after the axles are warmed up a bit... but my car is still like that

i agree. check your cv axle and boots. kind of sounds like the noise mine made when my cv axle blew up :shock:

It's your cv. A friend of mine was going nuts in a mud pit one time in his AWD ZJ and afterwards he had the same problem. And when he would put it in park, the jeep would keep rolling.

it only costed like 50-60 bucks for the axle. it sounded like it normally does when a cv axle is going, and then like the day before it blew up it sounded like clicking but waaaaay louder and all the time. luckily when it blew i was stopped, and when i tried to go, the rear tires spun and it sounded like someone was taking a baseball bat to my suspension.

is it really my bearing????? I asked so many ppl and all of em said cv axle....

My sister owned the car before me :smt013 and there was something wrong with the bearing.. she was too lazy to fix it i guess..

I can only go to a dealer to do that, right?

I'm only suggesting a bearing because your CV joints are/were intact. It still could be a CV.

But a bearing can be replaced by any competent mechanic - but just ask that they've worked on Subaru's before. It's not a guarantee, but it helps if they've done them.

ssssson of a .... im pretty sure its my tranny... i cant move without holding it a 3 grand and when i shift into park it sounds like a baseball card between bicycle spokes...


could i replace this myself? what do i need..? im not a mechanic but i knoe how to unscrew things... i found one already for $400.. i dont feel like a rebuld for $1800... i had to do that to my pontiac a few months ago :smt013

Make sure it's your trans first before you go buying stuff. If you've got a weekend to spare; drop the trans and check your torque converter, that could be your problem. Those are less expensive than a transmission. This way, you can check your axles as well. Are you getting a CEL by any chance?

whoa gunna have to stop you there. might be alot easier to pull the engine to check torque convertor.. ive done it 9 times or so..

Might be even easier to drain the tranny and check for damage that way first...

there's no cel but the at oil temp light does flash a few timew when i start her

im not sure if its doing it anymore.. i know that when i started it after work a few minutes ago i noticed the "tumbling rock) noise wasnt heard when i was sitting still in park... it does it in nuetral when im moving tho... should i post up a vid for you guys so you'll get what im talking about?

Just like changing the oil. Get the car warm, then undo the tranny drain bolt. Check that bolt to see if any metal shavings are attached - it's magnetic. When everything is drained, you can bang on the drain pan with your hand - if you hear anything bounce around inside, you have something severe mechanically going on. You'll have to drop the pan in that instance to see what's up.
