This is cigarettes, not grass, btw

I just thought I'd ask, because I've recently seen quite a few people I knew from High School standing outside work smoking, and I'm thinking," what the hell is wrong with you?! I know you know about the risks!"

I smoked for 15 years. I was up to 3 packs a day the last few years. I quit cold turkey back in Aug of '91. Somehow I was able to stay off 'em even during the whole 9/11 tragedy. I was out in Oregon at the time for my sisters wedding and my dad, stepmom, sister, brother in-law, uncle, and about 4 cousins all were chain smoking sitting around the TV. I used hard candy to over come my oral fixation. It was really hard. I also gained about 50 lbs when I quit.

gained 50lbs? maybe I need to start! Just kidding. Mark, you left out the "Hell no" choice, so I just chose "no, never". I'd rather not walk around smelling like an ashtray...I hate it when people even smoke close to me.

i smoke. doing quite now considering i go through a pack every other day instead of about 1.5 packs a day when i was going through grad school.

people constantly harp about smoking being bad for you. yes, it's true, and i accept it. but please, don't make us smokers sound liek baby-killers because we smoke.

another point that is constantly brought up.... smokers drive up the cost of health-care. to some extent, that's true too. but with that in mind, we should also consider the obese, alcoholics, other "smokers".... the list goes on.

I wasn't trying to villanize you, Gil

i know, i know. but i just had to get it off my chest.

there was this one girl that used to work for me, she'd try to give me a 15-min explaination about why smoking is bad for me EVERYTIME she saw me with a ciggie or smelled smoke on my breathe..... happily, she left cos she could not hack the pace of work.

i think i'm one of the few who started smoking at a later age, i started about 21. i was in the army, 3 to 5 nights of guard duty every month took its toll. long and boring nights. someone offered me a smoke, and i took it. it helped pass teh time, and kept the mosquitoes away. oh well.

never smoked. Never really had the temptation. Smoking around here is slowly being fazed out.

In high school you could only smoke in a little 20x30 foot area, then the next year it got smaller, and smaller, and now its tiny and you require a parents signature to get a card which allows you to use that space. Of course, you could go off school grounds but thats enough deterrent for most.

About two years ago they banned smoking in public places (restaurants, bars, everything but your own private place). Many bar owners complained they lost business, but theyre still around. Luckily this was before I turned 19 so I didnt have to deal with smoky bars. Now its a provincial wide law (the french loved it of course  )

My university only allows smoking outside where the ash trays are located (all of them are about 30 feet from buildings.

Its very rare that I have to deal with cigarette smoke, so it doesnt bother me if someone smokes.
