car: 98 subaru outback 5spd with 150k miles

im going to be doing a rebuild on my subie, im going to pick up some heads on sunday, and ive got a full headgasket kit with headstuds on the way, but there one thing im still undecided on, i have 3 options

1 the cheapest: keep my stock block and just slap the heads on and be done with it

2 the medium priced: split the shortblock check all my clearences replace the bearings and put it all back together with new seals

3 my favorite: split the shortblock put ej22t crank and rods in with my stock pistions new bearings, gaskets, wrx oil pump, etc and the put it all together and run it on pp6 or emanage ultimate untill i have money for a turbo setup

i want to do option 3 but it will require time and money and im not 100% set on keeping the subie, if i do this build though i will deffinately keep it. if i just do the first choice i will sell the car and save for a wrx which will take about 6 months to a year, or if i do option 2 the car will stay a slow daily driver and i might get a 240sx in a month or so... so what do you guys think??? p.s. im making between 170-200 dollars a week and im living at home so my only expenses are my insurance and gas to get to and from work right now and im working as a mechanic at a private shop and attending votech on monday and fridays which is where the car is

just to tell you the ej25d has the 10mm oil pump that the wrx/sti/fxt has/
but if you want to do a build, save your money till you can do it right.
with the money you make now. a second car is out of the question
i would just slap the heads on can call it good

how about sending the cams of for a regrind? They will work well right now and will work even better with a turbo...(the mild setup doesn't need to be used with any EM IIRC).

If you aren't sure about keeping it then you go cheapest and fastest way to fix it.

I like Option 3 because thats very close to my setup. I am running the EJ22T/EJ25 hybrid using an EJ22T ECU. The harness has been merged and the car is now running an OBD1 system.

ur car is where i got option 3 from, but i cant make the car obd1 because of inspection reasons, i mean obviously i could and shell oout a little more at inspection time to make sure it passed  but im open to all options right now, so if you have the wiring diagrams you used id be happy to make a copy cat of your car

but how did you merge the harness? did you re pin the plugs or did you cut and splice?

if you have inspection, dont bother then. Fix it to get it up and running again.

Don't know how much option 3 is costing you but you know you can get a brand new EJ257 (STi) shortblock from the dealership for under $1500. Either way you'll be running low compression and the car will be slow(er than what you have) until you get the turbo setup installed. It will run just like that with no EM and pass emissions with no CELs - I've done it, the stock ECU is amazingly able to compensate for certain things.

When you turbo the car you will need EM to manage fuel/timing so it doesn't blow up. Course, getting the shortblock is most of the way towards a turbo setup anyway. You can pick up the rest (WRX turbo, IC, exhaust, crossmember) for really cheap.

well i got the heads and a rebuild kit is now int he mail on the way here, i also got a ej25 shortblock and intake with fuel injectors, coil and wires, but the shortblock halves are damaged (was dropped) but the whole rotating assembly is fine so now i just need to ej25 block halves and i will assemble my low comp block and drop it in, if anyone knowss of a shortblock in the nj/pa/ny area for cheap it would be a great help because if i dont have the motor together by the end of this week or early next week the heads are just going to go on my stock block and i wont end up turboing this for awhile
