i just read this in a another thread i think?
if the diagnostic port is in the lower left side of the steering wheel (near where your knee would be) i have OBDII then right?
i tried to tell the guys at autozone it has the OBDII :smt013 :smt013
without even checking it he said right away "NOPE, i cant check 95's"
well, 20 minutes before this i was in another parking lot and the car wouldnt start? i could crank the motor for 10 seconds and no fire? i smelled gas after a little while with no fire...then all of the sudden it just started? it happened again 2 days later (this morning) so im getting concerned it wont start at all and ill be stranded...
the engine light comes on after this and then it goes out 4-5 days later untill it does the same problem. i guess ill get the car scanned and report my problem....

The 95 Legacy has OBD II because 95 was the beginning of a new Legacy model. The auto manufacturers were aware we were moving to OBD II, required in 1996, so when they engineered vehicles they sometimes introduced OBD II early so they didn't have to engineer the electronics twice. Some GM vehicles had OBD II all the way back in 1994, especially since GM piloted some the OBD electronics.

SOME 95's have OBDII. Some have OBDI.

It's based on VIN#, not just manufacture year.
Also, the port doesn't simply mean you have OBD2 - it just means you have a port. There are two different types of connectors, for OBD1 and OBD2.

Just go back, get the guy to come outside with his OBD2 scanner and plug in. Just tell them it's a 96.

If their scanner won't read, then you have OBD1.

Has anyone actually seen an OBD-I BD/BG/BK Legacy? I was under the impression they were all OBD-II for the reasons I stated already (why engineer an OBD-I ECU only for it to be replaced with an OBD-II system in one model year.) So I'd be interested to hear if that is true.

i have never seen one. i had the talk at the local subie dealer in Noho today. you see tons of legacy (mostly 2nd gens) in Noho. talked to all the techs. they never seen a OBDI 95 legacy or have any FSM for OBDI 95 legacys

Not only did I see one, I drove one. it was a weird mishmash of OEM parts. You know how some 99 BK's got the SOHC MAP EJ25? Same deal.

But yes, you guys are correct - but there are always anomalies that roll off the production line.

I have a 95 BK and i know for a fact that its got a OBD 2 port on it but to the guys problem ive had the same problem it all started when gas was out the roof so i never filled up only 1/4 tank or so when i had the cash to so i thought it might be low on gas and the pump not picking it up but it did it on a day when i had 1/2 tank of gas and i talked to my grandpa whos been a Mech for 50+ years and said to check the grounds especially the one on the tranny right on top and check the terminals sometimes its not getting grounded for the fuel pump somehow but it works like a charm now. I also poured lucas fuel cleaner in it and that helped out too.
