This was basically so easy I shouldn't do a write up, but figured what the heck...
Background:
02-04 impreza autodim mirror with compass was used, windshield mounted
98 LGT installed in, with roof mounted mirror...
Supplies needed:
Philips screw driver, chunk of wire, something to depin a post on the mirror (aka small screwdriver), 2 18-22 gauge butt connector, and 18-22 gauge O-ring connector, Gm mirror tab, and mirror glue
How to:
First step is determining if you want to use the reverse disengagement of the autodim (i didn't so I disgregarded the wire that controls this off the back of the mirror wiring harness). However there were 3 wires on the mirror wiring harness. B/W (Power), Black (ground), black (reverse). In that order. Depin the third wire and disregard it and refer to a power and ground.
Once the 2 wires are left on the harness it should already be removed from the back of the mirror. Place the harness in a location where you can find it. Focus on the mirror tab. There are 2 mirror tabs that can be bought at the Help Center of any autoparts store, there is a larger Gm windshield mirror tab and a small one, you want to purchase the larger one, bring the mirror as reference and it should slide right in for a tight fit.
You should now have all the parts needed. You should start by removing your old mirror. there is a plastic case that snaps over the mirror mounting bracket, it's kind of a pain to get off and won't just fall off, pry delicately as you don't want to break it. Once you remove that, remove the screw that olds the mirror in place and the mirror will just fall into your lap.
Clean the windshield with the alcohol pad included with the mirror glue, and mount your mirror tab (make sure it's going the correct direction as it's a pita to get the tab off if you do it wrong) The tab needs to set for 15-30 mins. Now the fun part wiring.
Remove the casing that holds your sunroof controls in, along with the bezel trim that goes around the sunroof opening, as you need room to move wires under the headliner. Once you get the switches disconnected, and the lamp disconnected, place the control box aside and focus on the mirror wiring harness.
take the mirror wiring harness and feed the wires up from the tab you are letting dry to the opening of where the control box for the sunroof is. Once you have that in position you will notice that there is a motor for the sunroof and screws holding it to the roof aka a perfect ground. Take the 0-ring connector and connect it to the ground on the mirror wiring harness and place the screw through it that you remove from the sunroof motor and tighten it down...the ground is done.
Now remove your driverside sunvisor. You will notice that the mirror has vanity lights, excellent source of an accessory power. The Green/red wire is your power. Cut the wire leaving enough room to place a connector. Use a butt connector and the chunk of wire you have to connect it to the power wire you've located, placing 2 wires on one side and the other side of the green wire on the other side of the connector. Make sure to insulate the wire some more with electrical tape as it may rub on the roof causing for issues, and insulate the connector with electrical tape too. Now feed the chunk of wire you have through the headliner, towards the windshield you will see a groove where the rest of the wires for the sunroof are routed. Trim the chunk of wire to fit with the mirror harness leaving some slack so it's not really tight.
By this time the mirror tab should be cured. Place the mirror on the tab tighten it down, install the wiring harness, but the control box for the sunroof back on, along with the bezel trim for the sunroof opening, and finally put the sunvisor back in taking regard for the extra connector and wire that now exists there, be cautious to not jam it up there.
Turn the key to accessory and see your new mirror light up.
My mirror self calibrated by just driving my car for a few days, yours should do the same I assume...and enjoy...pics to come...
