Xbox + router network... ???

Ok, here's the problem.

No matter what configuration I use, or router, I cannot get my 360 online sharing the same cable modem as my PC.

On my old setup, I had a wireless router/ADSL modem where the modem+router were the same unit, I just plugged in and away we went. Could even use my 360 to browse my PC's movies etc. It had 4 ports + the DSL port.

Now, I have a cable modem that has just 1 Ethernet jack, and a coaxial jack.

I can setup my router (I have two to try, a Netopia 3346N and a Trendnet TE100-S5) and run a cable from my cable modem into the router, then run another cable into the PC. Works - internet, iTunes etc. But when I try to run a cable from the 360 to the router, I get zilch, but the computer is still able to browse the net.
Unfortunately, I can't use the ADSL router without a DSL line.

ADSL router + X360 = works
ADSL router + PC = works
ADSL router + X360 + PC = works

Cable modem + PC = works
Cable modem + X360 = works
Cable modem + router + PC = works
Cable modem + router + X360 = works

Cable modem + router + X360 + PC = fail

I'm running Cat5e cable at each point, and I cannot understand why the signal isn't getting through to/from the X360.
I've switched the cables around, to make sure the cables are good, tested each LAN port on the routers.

Time Warner Cable, if that helps.

Normally I'd try to figure this out myself, but I've been trying and I cannot see the trees for the leaves (so to speak).

when you switched from DSL to cable, did you leave the PPPoE user name and password stuff in there? or possibly an old IP address in your xbox?

I'd reset all the network stuff on your 360 and see if it will pull a DHCP address from your router and connect.

Thanks for the quick reply Matt - I have reset everything on the Xbox - cleared it all so it's supposed to be picking up everything new...

I'll check again.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Is the DHCP server on your router enabled? If so, how many addresses is it set to allow?

I'd reset the router to default and start over there too.

The routers are the kind that are just through-puts...they have no real brains.

I know the both routers work as simple routers, I had my two work comps hooked up to them and both were sharing my @ work connection just fine...no additional settings to mess with.

The Trendnet device you linked to is a switch. That will not work with cable - cable providers limit your connection to one MAC address. (Which means PC or Xbox, not both)

The Netopia will only work as a router with ADSL. All those other ports are just a switch like the Trendnet.

If you have a Frys nearby, they sell a Router for $20.00.

I'm using the new style linksys router from walmart (wireless N for around $80). Does great with my laptop and xbox at the same time. I have cable as well and have never had a problem only being able to use one device or the other until my last router crapped out. It was outdated anyways. Some older routers are not compatible with XBox Live, btw. We had a problem with Barry and Rob playing in the same room before until Barry bought a new router.

^^^ I've run my xbox through my PC piping off the PC's wireless adapter, but the majority of PC's also only have one ethernet port. So if he's porting to the computer directly, he won't be able to go to the xbox. Also, the computer would have to be on to use the xbox, and the connection might be slow (especially ping times) which is important for online gaming.

Honestly I'm not sure. But it might have something to do with your router setting priorities on certain devices when multiple are in use. Can you borrow a friends laptop for a few min and see if they can connect via ethernet to the router while your PC is on or xbox is on? See if there's something between the PC and xbox or if it's the router in general.

The problem is -

What he is calling a router is not. The Trendnet device is a SWITCH.

The router he DOES have is an ADSL router - so he is connecting the SWITCH part of the router to the cable modem.

He needs a true router.

Connecting your computer OR Xbox directly to the cable modem is dangerous. That is like standing naked in a snowstorm.

You need to get a proper DSL/Cable Router like this:

However, my Xbox just threw a RROD (man. 2007) last night while I was playing, so connecting to Live might be the least of my worries now.

Ha...mine just threw an E47 code with a lower right red light. I was 37 days out of warrenty. If it had been a week earlier I could've forced their hand in a grace period, but oh well. Arcade version with my HDD and I'm back on track.

Hopefully you get a new Xbox from Microsoft. This has happened to many of my friends but it is not stopping me from getting one. As soon as my son's grades improve, look for me online playing Battlefield:Bad Company! (He gets one if he gets straight As)

I feel bad for you because cable companies rarely mention that you need a firewall/router between your computer and the cable modem. The Windows Firewall is not good enough protection from the Wild West we call the Internets....

At least the ADSL solution you had included a hardware router solution.

Thanks guys, birkun I really appreciate the help. I kept thinking for sure the solution was simple...why they just don't make a router/switch all in one is beyond me. Oh well!

I have a box coming from MS for my warranty return. The RROD is covered under a 3 year factory warranty; all other failures are 1 year only. So my box is covered now, and when it returns to me it'll have a new 3 year warranty for any future RROD failures.

I'm really hoping they'll just switch it out for a newer model with the Jasper chipset. Mine sounded like a B52 on takeoff.

Some Internet history:

Broadband routers (for the home aka Small Office/Home Office SOHO) were created *solely* to allow multiple computers to be hooked to CABLE modems. Cable companies charged extra $ to allow more than one MAC address/IP address on one modem. You could buy service for 3 computers using a switch back in the day by paying that extra $. I remember budgeting for my home router. Extra IP = $10/month or Cable Modem/DSL router = $85.00. I knew I would have service for at least a year, so I was saving $ by getting the router.

Fast forward to modern day, and the cable company STILL limits the connection to 1 MAC/ 1 IP, unless you pay more. When you added another device, you could not get an IP address for it. That is why it did not work.

It ended up being better when the router manufacturers added the Firewall part to the router, which hides you from most of the rest of the Internet. This protects all your network-connected devices, including printers. (sending print jobs over the Internet is fun but no doubt annoying to the owner.....)

The other benefit is that Time Warner CD they gave you with their custom browser is unnecessary. Any browser will work - you simply connect to the switch on your router and it just works.

E47 or E74? If you're buying a new one anyway, there are a few internet solutions to fix the E74 problem. It involves placing a weight on the chip so that when it heats the chip doesn't flex the sauder connections.

No idea what code. I get RROD, the Xbox turns off completely except for the RROD.

MS is sending me a UPS box on Friday, and RROD's are a 3 year warranty deal.

Well here's something stupid, and related I guess...

My Xbox isn't RROD'ing anymore, but tonight I got an E68 failure but solved that by removing the HDD, and rebooting twice without the HDD attached. Problem gone.

Back to the router issue:

And when I plug my cable modem into it, it registers that signal, but when I plug my computer into it, it doesn't allow me to connect to the net.

Dremel?? I've never had to use a dremel to replace the x-clamps... :smt017 Done a few including my own with no issues afterwards. :cool:

Roger: Have you reset your MODEM? The MODEM links to the routers MAC address, if you swap the router without resetting the MODEM you won't get connectivity. Even though the MODEM shows a link. Unplug it and wait about 15 seconds and plug it back in, I'd do this for the router as well and reboot the PC at the same time. If that doesn't work, right click on your LAN under Network Connections and choose the repair option in Windows. See where that gets you.

^+1 exactly,,,,,,, turn off your pc and unplug the power to the modem and router. Plug the modem in first, wait for it to boot up. Then plug in the router. Wait for that to boot up. Then turn on the pc. If this doesn't work, your router might not be configured to give out dhcp.

Helps if you get a router that actually does what it says. I went with a DLink WBR-1310. It's not N, but it's G, and it works.

Extremely easy to setup. I had the router secured using WPA protocol in under 5mins, so no more wireless trolling by the neighbours. Xbox live works well too, just have to find a clean route to run my ethernet cable.
