What do you mean by "5th gear dont help when your doin 90."? Do you think the rpm's are too high or do you think there's not enough power to give it? If you're saying you'd want it for better gas mileage, 6th gear in the 6mt is actually very close to the 5th gear in the 5mt. The 3.90 gearing might drop it a little bit at 90mph, but nothing real drastic.

It'll work - it's been done more than once IIRC. Most often paired with motor swaps because it isn't the most practical with an n/a engine since the gearing could actually make the car feel slower.

You'd basically need the transmission, the axles, the mount, the linkage, the shifter, the clutch, the 4eat driveshaft, the 3.90 or 3.54 (depending on year) r160 differential and a DCCD controller if you need/want it.

I think the STi 6-speed brand new costs around $4k. Cheapest I've seen it done used was about $2000 though, so you never know.

My '05 6mt (3.90) 6th gear is really close to if not the same as the 4.111 5mt I replaced in my '93. Both do 70 mph at 3k rpm.

I don't know what kind of front axles a BE has, but I needed the infamous stub axles to use my female front axles.

its the same as swapping a 6speed into a WRX/any other subaru. JoeT has one in his car.

i dont like doin 90 and its revvin at like 4500 or something. i just think thats stupid and want that extra gear

4500rpm = 95mph on most 5 speed subaru's.

Get the STi gearing, get a gear calculator, and figure out the speeds yourself before making these kinds of assumptions.

Your answer:

One more gear is not going to make your rev's go down. A Spec.B 6mt has a slightly taller gear than the STi 6-speed but it still wont anything drastic and it'll still cost a lot.

...slow down!

I have a 6 speed STI tranny and it's as worse as the stock 5 speed, just shorter gears. I think you can mess around with the rear diff to change the ratios? Read up, you'll find your answer.

^ um no, changing your rear diff will just make your car break.... need to change out both the center and rear.

Ah, so that was what that streak was that passed me on I94. I thought it was a Honda or a Hummer H3. Lol I looked into This a while back.... It was a reduction of only a couple hundred rpm. Not cost effective..... Though a 6MT would be fun to drive.....

Yeah, I wouldn't get a 6 speed if you think the extra gear is there to spread out the gearing...the 6 gears actually are there for even shorter spacing between gears (1-4 is extremely short on the 6 speed, you have to shift into 3rd to do a 0-60 accel test)...the upside to this though is that tighter spacing allows to keep a peaky engine like a turbo 4banger in the meat of its powerband, like in a rallycar...

Oh and I have yet to find a stretch of clear road long enough to wind it up to 7k in top gear :lol:...maybe a trackday down the line is in order...
