View Full Version : hesitation under 2k...thoughts?

So my 1997 Outback Legacy Wagon, 5 speed manual with 118k miles was throwing a knock sensor code, which the dealer changed and cleared the code. They had the agreement with the previous owner, and did it no charge to me.

Prior to that, I drove the car around about 85 miles with the CEL on, and the car drove fine.

After the dealer changed the knock sensor and cleared the CEL I am getting a slight hesitation in the 900-1600rpm range.

It is rather weird, as it doesn't happen all the time. It happens in gear 1, 2, and 3 only.

Basically say I am driving at 45 mph, then coming up to a light, clutch in,downshift to second, slow down, and release the clutch (THIS IS WHEN IT HAPPENS), if the RPM at this time is in the 900-1600 range, there is a hesitation, shaking of the car (best I can describe it) as it is going forward.

THen it becomes fine.

It also does it, from a stop light, 0mph, in 1st gear, release the clutch, and then it does a bog.

It doesn't do it all the time, but intermittently.

I also thought maybe I wasn't putting enough gas from a stop, but I am. If I rev to 1500rpm, it isn't doing it in 1st gear.

It isn't a big problem, but can be annoying sometimes.

Fuel FIlter
Air Filter
Oil Filter
Tranny/diff change
Plugs
Wires

In 2 weeks. I am wondering if there is anything I need to look at , or if this is a common problem.

It's not clear based on your description so I'm going to ask:

Is the hesitation/shaking happening as you are releasing the clutch?
Or is it happening after the clutch is fully engaged and you are accelerating?

Do you live in St. Louis? (Guessing based on your s/n) If you do maybe you can bring it over and we can take a look...

Yes I am in St Louis for a work project for the next 11 months. Would love it if you would take a look and be so kind. I am doing the window tint tomorrow, but available to show you anytime otherwise. I live in Webster Groves, and work downtown.

It happens, AFTER I release the clutch, and accelerate.

Your poor engine thinks it's turbo'd. Have to spool that baby up before you drop the clutch. :smt016

I don't want to launch it at 2k everyday, and paying for a clutch for the beater :grin:

Sometimes, yes.

I don't really have any ideas except maybe reset the ecu. Give it a fresh set of values. Maybe it will work..

My buddy with his BD GT had a similar problem that was related to a massive exhaust leak. But this is a back pressure issue.. So its no use to you.

unhook battery and rehook?

unhook negative terminal
step on the brake pedal for a minute or so to drain the system

that should work

Thank you for the help.

Went out driving today, in 1st gear, when car warmed up, letting go of clutch, NO hesitation at all.

It only does when car is already rolling, in a bit higher gear, and only right under 2K rpm, but not consistently.

I don't know man. When your in 2nd and 3rd your usually not going to fall below 2000rpm. My car hesitates when i am not paying attention and the RPM's fall below 1500 and then I give some gas and theres some slight jerkyness.
