Hey guys, i need help urgently. I need to take my car up into the mountains in a couple of days and i just ran into a problem today. Really gotta get this fixed before i head out.

I had a slow leak around my power steering pump and before ordering a new pump i wanted to check if it was due to a leak from the reservoir or the pump itself.

I took the reservoir off yesterday to check and put it back on today. I didn't take any fluid out of the pump though and i just topped off the reservoir after i put it back.

Today i have this horrible errggggg sound (maybe described as a whine, but more of a howl) whenever i turn, and especially when i turn and apply gas. When i open up the PS fluid it's all bubbly on top. And the wheel shudders pretty badly.

Any ideas what's happening? Do i have air in the system even though i never emptied the pump? The only place i guess air could get in is on the return line that enters at the side of the resevoir

yes that is because of air in the system, set the front of the car up on jack or slightly elivated and with the car running turn the wheel all the way to the right and all the way to the left a few times slowly and then a few times quickly and that should get most if not all of the air out

Thanks, i tried that for several hours last night and no luck. I got back on it this morning and I think i might have fixed it. I guess i needed to let all of the tiny air bubbles get out after having operated it with air in the system.

this is how we bleed PS run the car up at 2500rpm and turn the wheel almost to lock the the other way almost to lock and repeat about 10-20 times

it could also be that your belt to your ps pump isn't tightened properly. when i got my car it was squealing all the time when i cranked the wheel all the way either direction, new belt properly tensioned and no problems since. worth checking IMHO

Well it's fine under normal driving, but when i make a series of low speed tight turns i start to get the shutter and can hear the pump working overtime again.

I just had the accessory belts changed, they seem tight enough with less than an inch of deflection.

idk how the resevoir is connected to the pump because i havnt looked at my engine in awhile but is it possible it wasnt put back together tight enough and the pump is sucking in air somwhere?
