View Full Version : What are my options

Since the swap in my bd required gutting the spring in the radiator cap to let coolant flow to the reservoir, it has a bit of a leak. As far as my research has found wrx and sti radiators do not fit. What are the options: a sealed cap? (I have heard of zero sports but can't read japanese) Do bc turbo radiators fit in bd's? As far as I have found koyo rads ar different between the two generations. Any direction to look would be great.

Bump, won't pass tech at autox or drags if even a drip comes out, don't want to miss any track time this summer.

Bump, can't find anyone local with a bc to check fitment. There has to be a couple guys on here with swaps that have some kind of info.

I was told that the bugeye (02-03) WRX rads will fit the BD but Im not positive.

I believe the upper coolant hose in in the center instead of the passenger side, but if it fits in there that's half the battle, thank you.

The 00-04 Legacy's will, not the BD's.
Have you compared the GC impreza rads? There's a good chance they'll fit. Someone's making aluminum rads for them now as well...

Mainly looking for a radiator for a turbo car that has the coolant reservoir the N/a's don't have. That way it wouldn't have a cap on the rad, just a 3/16" nipple just above the upper coolant hose neck on the passenger side, for the coolant line going from the rad to the reservoir.

Something from a GD wrx should fit. The issue is the top posts of the radiator not lining up.
It also depends on the rad brackets you have for your car now.
Another option would be to check out some of the newer WRX's that have 2 rad caps. 1 on the rad and 1 on the tank on the manifold. You can just opt to get that particular cap instead of crushing like we use to do. I have been running 2 standard caps on my swapped GC for about a year now.

Subaru discontinued that style of radiator on the early WRX's - apparently too many radiators ended up cracking the plastic endtanks. They all get changed to the 2 cap (one on the rad, one on the reservoir tank on the engine) cooling system even if you bring your car with the early cooling system to the dealership now.
You can get the "official" conversion kit which is just a fancy y pipe and extra hoses, or do it yourself using some parts from the autostore.
I'm running a 2 cap system on my car, using an sti radiator (basically the same thing as the 00-04 Legacy/02+WRX's) but with the coolant reservoir on the engine (originally from a WRX) as well.

More info on this? I tried searching but haven't came up with anything other than a y pipe, but no pics. I would like something like that since the radiator is in great condition, I wouldn't mind purchasing one only due to the fact I plan on doing a show here and there, but if the diy doesn't look to bad that's an option.

First off, what car are you doing this to? What engine are you running?

Very interesting. My turbo'ed EJ25 hybrid has a two cap setup, one on the rad one on the manifold tank with a plastic overflow mounted on the end of the rad. I thought nothing of it but I assume the guy that did the engine work swapped radiators? Or perhaps just added the manifold tank and kept the stock rad? Mine looks like the pic above, but there is a metal tank with cap on the manifold as well.

I'm not 100% sure if the BD cars had the capped radiators...but it's not a big deal to go from one cap to the 2 cap setup. It's more a case of whichever radiator you can get that will determine it.

I dont know for sure, but i believe the 2 cap setup has 2 different rate springs.
notice in the picture in the post above. the cap on the rad is completely round without the little "wings" on the sides. Then the one on the resorvoir on the motor does have the wings. I beleive Subaru does this to indicate exactly which ones go where due to different spring rates.
Keep an eye on the small details. ;)

yup, that's completely true, don't mix up the 2 caps. I think one has pressure/vac and the other is just pressure.

98 lgt, ej20g swap. As far as I know it's the stock style radiator, the stock overflw tank, since the ej20 has the secondary reservoir had to gut the cap on the radiator so coolant can flow to there. Then coolant will expand to the overflow from the reservoir.
