Man it would of been 3 years without a Subaru and without a car in April... I held off looking for a 5spd wagon which is kinda rare here in the NE. The car found me 2 days ago in NY for $400 I got this AWD wagon with 198K on it.. needs a little work like the exhaust and I have a coolant leak and a check engine light is on so I need to pull the code for that.

Also the ABS light will flash a code when the key is turned to ON and it will flash when the car is running until you press the brake.

I have a few things to do before I feel ok enough to take it on a long trip.

Also the shifter feels like a wet noodle :smt005 so that's going to be changed.

some pictures I just took.

car seems to have aftermarket sunroof

I figured out what color your car is. Lyurple.

(For those who don't get the reference, it's from Celebrity Jeopardy on SNL)

But really, I think that may be the most accurate color for the vehicle. :smt023

I gotta replace the header (YEA!!) now I have a reason to. Someone tried to patch it up I guess it had a leak. I can't seem to find a good price ok them.

did you tint the high beams or was that done previously? ratcheting wrenches are awesome for small stuff that like and just about everything else so invest in a set of those and i guarantee you'll be glad you did.

I tinted the hi-beams with 4 coats of stain glass paint. and I only have one ratcheting wrench which is in 3/4 I can't find my damn 1/2 in ratcheting which I spent more money then i should on it because I was doing brakes on my impreza at the time.

I made custom cut off shields for the headlights.. I don't think I ever posted a picture of that.. I tried using a coke can and traced the JDM shield but I hated it.. so I did one free hand and made a copy which turned out very good.

I used Aluminum flashing and it's held in by JB wield (the only thing that could stand the heat in front of the bulb)

Reason never got back with me :smt017 but I found a good deal on a Koyto Radiator for $117 and free shipping for a new one.

Also this battery is on it's way out.. I mean lol I'm still not good on hills yet so if I stall the car with the headlights on I have to turn the headlights off in order to start the car. I had planned on getting a yellow top battery when that time comes..

I replaced all wiper blades yesterday Bosh icons in the front and a Annco Contour for the rear which I should sand the rear and paint because it's kinda rusted.

also gotta replace the clutch petal has no rubber on it at all :-/

Oh yeah the shifter trim is not missing I just happen to take the photo when installing my radio that I had in the forester.

1-3-2-4
03-13-2009, 08:41 PM
man so I just changed the oil and all.. I kept the 4 crush washers from when I had my forester so I take the drain bolt off and I look to see what seems to be a brass washer used as a crush washer... So after finally getting it off I found yet another washer under that one  And the other thing was the oil filter was on so tight the rubber seal as flat.

Also so my water pump arrives on the 17th and radiator on the 18th after all that's said and done next would be the exhaust. I was thinking about getting a hi flow cat from Stromung or should I get a OBX and have the shop put it in?

The headlights are awesome! I'm jealous. I read that you want to replace your clutch pedal. The rubber piece is just a removable pad, you can get another one from the dealer or find one in a junkyard from another 5MT Subaru.

1-3-2-4
03-13-2009, 11:06 PM
Ha I did not think anyone followed that about the clutch petal but yeah I need to replace that I still have no hi-beams yet but they are really not needed.. it's a pain because I can't drive anyplace just yet.

I think i went a little heavy on the yellow tint with the spray paint.. because I was not sure if I would get stopped or anything I did not paint the reflector inside the hi-beam housing but just the outside so I can always take it off with paint thinner.

I used 5 coats for the left headlight and 4 for the right.. when it does light up it looks good I have to get some shots after I do the engine work.

ugh so as it is I don't have all the replacement bulbs for the HVAC controls since the dealer did not give me the right size I found the right size and ordered 3 white LCD NEO 3 LED's from superbrightleds I guess they should be here sometime this week...

1-3-2-4
03-15-2009, 09:56 PM
hmm the car is wanting more love... my ABS relay is stuck so it causes the ABS motor to run regardless if the key is in the ignition or not. it's a $50 or so part from Subaruparts.com seems to be an issue on the 95/96 model years.

I got a little nervous since I only unplugged the pump motor so I decided to make a dash for the highway since I never took it out on it yet.. I also finally got to hit 5th gear :smt029

as soon as I tapped the brakes at 70 mph I can tell pad and disc replacements are going to have to be on order soon.

03-22-2009, 10:25 PM
:D that's one thing I missed doing was working on my car this was the first time I did a timing belt, had a little issues with the cam.. I looked at the end wrench write up on the 2.2L TB and I did not line up the crank notch with the cams.

once I did all that I was good :D

Now tomorrow my center muffler will arrive.. however the bolts are so rusty and I can't tell for sure what size they are.. I have to get everything done by Sunday because that's when my temporary plate expires and I don't get another...

Looks like I will have to stop at the stealership for the knock sensor and hold they don't need to special order it.

the funny thing with the koyo radiator the top part that holds the hood rod it wont fit over the radiator like the old one.. also does anyone happen to know what bolt size holds down that part that goes over the radiator? somehow they got misplaced and it's up too high to the point where it's a little hard to close the hood.

1-3-2-4
03-23-2009, 02:01 PM
now I know why my knock sensor is not working... it has a crack in the side and it looks like a mouse or something made a nest and starting chewing on the wire in three spots.

man so far I have noticed my car color and how low it sits makes for a lot of people who don't see me. I got cut off by a taxi on the first day driving out of town. And on the highway a large box truck did the same. I don't bother blowing the horn because of how wimpy it is. Gotta get the super tones soon.

yeah but will I have a large gap? I'm scared to lower my car anymore because of my tow hooks

Huffer

The gap will be the same as you currently have. Changing wheels doesn't reduce/enlarge gap as long as you keep the rolling diameter the same:

That means if you decide to get another axle-back that you can't unbolt the stock one and bolt the new one on!

So what are my options?

Starting over again. :smt009

I mean, back to the exhaust shop to cut them apart and intall new flanges on each end (but I don't see that happening with the other end being old) or replace the header (or older part) and start anew.

did you guys bother to read what the price would of been? I went to monroe for parts and labor it would of been around $650. I'm not made of money and when I told him I brought my own part he said right off the bat they don't install parts you bring in... So unless you guys want to chip in :D

Anyways I just got a flat this morning so looks like I need some new tires anyways.

I don't think this was for me. However, I did read your post and was only breaking the news to you in return to what you asked Huffer.

You got what you paid for.... Like American Express, Doing it right has it's privelages although you pay extra
.
Sometimes it's better to save up a little more and do it right. With the way this was done, you'll probably be back there in a few months to a year. But what do I know... I only did my exhaust 3 years ago and it's still as good as new. Good luck with your tire situation.

1-3-2-4
03-29-2009, 11:29 AM
why would I need a new axle back anyways? just chop off the pipe leading to the muffler and put a new one on.. and about the flange I will have to put the car on 4 jack stands but I'm guessing they wielded the pipe to the flange exit.. so just take it off should I want to get a super overpriced axle back for a simple 2.2L just cut the wield off and shave it down.

If my father was still around he could of gave me pointers since he did wielding for over 20 years.

IMHO I don't think it's worth the $600+ these axle back's go for to put it on a low flowing 2.2L and not gain much of anything from it.

99SUS SFD
03-29-2009, 12:09 PM
Axel backs aren't $600.

You may need a new axel back some day if your current one ever rusts out, gets damaged, etc. Axel backs come with the tubing you would need to connect right to the midpipe, you wouldn't attach it to the existing tubing from past the midpipe to the muffler.

All the brands I have seen on boxer4 racing and other Subaru parts sites seem to price them that high, I know how a axle back looks and how it mounts I just can't find anything. As long as it can hold for maybe a month or so while I take care of more important issues like brakes being warped and replacing all 4 tires then I should be ok Wednesday I have to take the car for emissions testing.

lol exhaust drama. I'll go ahead and say it. Boxer4racing is for people that don't know any better when it comes to modifying a subaru. There are tons of better options out there for less money. A $600 axleback? For crying out loud thats a 16g EVO III turbo right there!

If your current muffler ever rots out, a $100 Borla, Magnaflow, or Dynomax (you know, performance exhaust makers that have been around for years in the US) generic muffler with $50 worth of time from a decent exhaust shop will be enough. Will someone be going on their hands and knees looking at the underside of your car to see how your exhaust looks like? Ugh highly unlikely. It looks ghettorigged right now but as long as it works and your money needs to go into other things I see no problem in using that setup for now.

finally the road was slick enough to get the car sideways to check for grip..

the car would feel better when I get 16's

the ABS is just as touchy as most Subaru's I've driven.. slowing down on a wet road that had worn down pavement caused the ABS to kick in when slowing down from 10 mph.

SO yeah I really found out why my car would not hold on anything but a tiny hill that was almost flat..

The passenger side brake shoe was way out of adjustment.. It took about 4 turns for it to hit the pad and me backing off one turn Now the parking brake handle is firm with 6 clicks and it holds on the hill fine.

Also seafomed the car today lots of smoke :p I was going to clean my IAC but I noticed I don't think I have one at least I did not see it when comparing pictures with the EJ25.

The bolt for the seat.. I was going to remove the seat since I needed to clean under it with the steam vac... well I got all 4 bolts on the passenger side out but the one that's sideways near the back near the cup holders it was hard to move out then finally I hear it break loose and I was like wow the PB blaster finally got in.. that is until it just kept spinning and spinning... and never backed out.

At that point I just cleaned what I could and put the other bolts back in..

From what I hear it's not as bad as it looks as far as replacing it?

I've got a creaking noise when I turn the wheels, but I thought it was the bearing at the top of the strut. Maybe it's my steering rack?

1-3-2-4: Can you take pictures when doing the repair? Thanks!

from what I hear the steering rack hardly ever fails.. the sound and the crack opened boot pretty much told me now where the sound was coming from..

Also I take pictures of all my repairs.. I have family members that say I still did not get a good deal on my Subaru for $400.. I want to rub it all in their faces.

The only thing I'm confused about is how to get the inner rod off.. I think it has a snap washer? or I forgot what it's called.. I have to check the FSM again.

In the coming weeks I plan to recharge my AC and replace the receiver/dryer and check for any leaks.. I think I have some leaks around where the O-rings are.. going to pull a vacuum on the system.

I don't know if I should clean the condenser since I don't feel like draining the coolant.

That along with the new tires and wheels will have to wait until next week.. darn union dues :(

Can't wait till the new tires are on with a new suspension I can't think what the car would feel like right now when the road is wet and the only spot on a road to work at you have to turn coming from a hill I've tried 10 mph it always understeers then catches like it's on a damn rail.

these toyo tires are not the greatest tires anyways... but ever since I rotated the tires it's more noticeable.

So how did you end up doing the yellow on your JDM lights? And how did you wire it that both high and low beam are on at the same time? Mine don't do that?

I saw your post about the yellow hi-beams with XxGTBSpecXx I did 7 layers of yellow Kylon stain glass paint on the outside of the housing just in case I was asked to remove it for some stupid reason..

as for the hi-beams and low beams on at the same time I made a relay harness for it I followed the thread that Warrior made and I forgot which that I grounded to the car but it's what keeps the low's on with the highs..

only issue is if I try to flash someone without my headlights on my HID's will also come on at the same time.. But then again I saw a BMW with stock HID's flash me to warn that a cop was ahead and his HID's flicked on and off when he did that.

Did the front rotors today I did not need to push the pads back any it just fit right over the rotor but no more warped rotor when I put the brakes on, I will do the rears when I get back from my vacation.

Also wash, claybar and waxed the car today and brought a wash arm that hooks to the garden hose mixes the soap for you but the rinse part of it still dumps too much soap or maybe I just added way too much.

So I had a flood on this past Sunday 8/23 which caused a few things inside to get wet and act erratic like the ECu and ABS module.. the carpet is all out and is now sitting in my living room sprayed some lysol on it.

Going to change the oil today and tranny and diff fluid just to feel "safe" water that got high enough to enter in under the doors is high enough to touch under the car.

wish gear oil was not so expensive

Huffer

If the water level didn't get higher than an open entry point on the car (like a fill tube) then there's no point changing the fluids out, unless they're already leaking. They're sealed systems.

Best thing you can do is drive the vehicle up and down hills and around in circles to dry it out.

well I need to change my MT fluid anyways ever since I must of got locked in betweens gears the car jolted forward enough to knock my rear view down it will sometimes grind going into 4th depending on how slow you pull back on it.. but then again it was doing that too when I first changed the diff oil and went away when I did also felt smoother.

I'd have to open the tranny up sooner or later so might as well try to get as many miles out of it as I can.

Oh yeah those gold Purolator filters are nice big improvement over the blue filters but I've never had an issue turning them off to replace them.

well here is something interesting... Before the flood I never had a hard time moving the car on level ground from a dead stop only going up to 1500 RPMS.. However after the mini flood it was very erratic and had me thinking I know it can't be me (I hate driving in my steeltoes) I had to at least get myself up to 2K or slip more then normal for it not to drop.

So I change the fluid and it's much much nicer now engages much more like it used to be..

also hardly no metal at all.. did not cover the whole top of the drain plug.

I did both the rear and front diffs.. Also for a 208K car just looking at the MT in the drain hole the ring gear looks pretty damn good.. I wont know the rest until I drop the trans one day because it seems my rear housing has a slow leak and when I drop it a new Center diff is going in along with a front LSD OBX as it seems no one has had issues with it yet (thread at NASIOC)

Finally met the WRX owner he told me if I ever needed any parts (he blew his first motor) Just ask so today was not that bad.. Seems the ECU has got enough data

So replaced my fuel filter because I don't know when the last time it was changed.. i could not find a fuel pump fuse in the manual so I went and unplugged the connector from the fuel pump and let the car run until it died and proceeded to disconnect the out hose to the engine..

Also I forgot to reset the ECU but my idle is bouncing around it will go from 688 to 750 about every 1-2 seconds.

Reason

What tool are you talking about? These 02 sensors come off with an open end wrench. And most people don't get a CEL from the headers, it varies. If you don't have it now I doubt you will.

Huffer
09-04-2009, 08:24 AM
the tool is more like $4:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=97177 (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=97177)

Reason - some vehicles due to their "CARB" spec when manufactured have close tolerances and it's tough to get the sensor out without an offset socket - the open head wrench doesn't provide enough leverage. My car is an example of this...

Reason
09-04-2009, 08:31 AM
I put a pipe over my wrench and that was it. Or you can combine two wrenches if you know the trick.

If I don't get a CEL (still haven't yet) why does my car idle funny after I put on the new headers? I don't think it could be the exahust leak right after the 2nd Cat? could it be effecting the Oxygen sensor?

1-3-2-4

well the exhaust leak is gone.. I did not take it on the highway near a road barrier however I did hear the sewing machine at idle but then again I was right up on the headers when the car was running..

You can feel the exhaust pulses more in the shifter no sound improvements with the stock exhaust..

The funny idle is still around but not as bad with the exhaust leak getting ready to hop out to make a quick video and sound clip.

OK screw this.. I reused the old doughnut and it seals well now where it's leak is where the axleback is.. I might need a thicker gasket if I can't get it to seal well... I don't know if later model years used thicker gaskets but I can't see that happening..

so everything is squared away with the cat and the center pipe.

How that cat is that donut gasket slips over the piped end and the round part sits in the mid pipe. Once the bolts are on and tighten it shouldn't rattle.

09-06-2009, 08:38 PM
I just compaired the sizes of the gaskets and the one that was put on by the shop is like 1-2% larger in size I don't understand that...

I still got a leak where the axleback and end of the center pipe meet.. I can't understand that one too. The sucky part is how the axleback is leaking at the gasket it's so friken small.. I wonder if later models had thicker gaskets?

Get a tube of red RTV sealer and coat both sides of the gasket. Also go and get a gasket from Subaru and not the cheap ones at the auto part stores. When that was on my car it didn't leak.

the axleback gasket is a subaru part! all the gasket for the exhaust I picked up from the dealership! I will try the sealant but this is nuts.. im also thinking about deleting my 2nd cat but anyways I drove with the new set up and you are right not that loud at all I was hoping for a little more loudness like 20 % louder

Reason

The deletion of one cat or two will make it louder. I had one cat when I had my SPT and it had some sound.

The deletion of one cat or two will make it louder. I had one cat when I had my SPT and it had some sound. I figure since it's leaky (2nd cat) might as well get rid of it.. How do you go about doing the o2 sensor delete?

I'm about to go out and grab some sound clips and video and a few stills (I have yet to take any night shots of the car) Well waiting because the beach I want to go to does not close for the season until Sept 30th.

How tight is the axle back to mid pipe? Really crush that gasket. I want to hear what it sounds like. I actually forgot what cat was deleted. I have two cats again... for now.

it's tight.. I'm a little nervous to go any tighter at the moment because the flanges on the rear end of the mid pipe don't look like they can hold I'm up to about 45 FT. Lbs on the axle back.. the funny thing was before all this was done and the stuff was still in the house I remember opening the gasket from the bag and placing it on the mid pipe to see if was correct and all that and I noticed with just a loose fit with the stuff connected I saw a little gap.. I just shrugged it off thinking well the stuff was only finger tight and should not be an issue :(

Alright I'm going to head out for a few to grab the sounds.

lol well I thought the picture was enough to show the tire size.. stock wheel for the legacy is 14 so to answer your question they will be on new wheels the steel wheels will only be getting winter tires from the point after I mount the new wheels.

Also for the MSD coil pack.. I'd have to see.. I mean a spark is a spark...

LOL, wow do i feel STUPID, i SEE now.. 205/55ZR16W of course that won't fit your steel wheels!!!
i know what you mean about the spark. It did give me some more power, but they're no dyno tests that prove the MSD really works.. SOMEthing changed when i put it on tho... (could've been the NGK wires and plugs too..)

new oil pan
inner tie rods
outer tie rods

it's only a 25ft 3/8 air hose it's no big deal as far as time wise because if I'm right you can't fit a impact to remove the bolts that mate the engine and trans together.. I need it for the cam seals and a few other bolts.

I went out to NJ yesterday to the pine barrens I was not lifted I had no problems.... until we were leaving to head out to a friends house.. about 3,000 Ft from the main exit road and I was outside the car talking to a friend and my car just stalled.. long story short my ECU got wet with muddy water that came in from where the evaporator lines come in since I never could get the grommet to full seal back on Lucky for him we have the same year cars and he happen to have a spare ECU in the back of the wagon.

It was fun lol lost both my fender liners so I have to put those back on.

I never noticed those orangey pin stripes! Weird...

I did notice how much of a difference winter tires were in the snow tho when I first had them compared to all seasons. They are so nice.

I did not have much problems last year it's just that my tires were already pretty much worn so getting the car to spin was very easy.

This is my first time driving on snow's it takes like what 150 miles to break them in? They say tonight some chance of snow but I doubt it will be much and Monday a snow/rain mix but does not look to be anything.

As far as the pinstripes I hate them :-/ good thing the car is getting repainted next year.

lol, you have to break them in? I just drove with them like normal all seasons.

Good! What color are you painting it?!

most new tires have a coating on it so the rubber wont dry out.. I work at a shipping company and we see tires daily and handling them makes your hands slick.

i had my ABS kick in yesterday moving at 3 mph just hitting a small depression manhole cover the day i got the tires.

And painting car black

Oh... That explains why my wheels squealed a little at a sudden stop when I first got them LOL.
Cool color, that will look good.

Haha just one the brown one was totaled :(

I've got to split open the tranny when it's not as wet out as it's got some issues 5th gear may be gone or the shift fork is shot.

Gotta do the headgaskets shortly before the meet and hopefully I will find a replacement transmission as well I came back from Michigan last week so I know I don't have too much life left on the gaskets.

Replaced the lights in the HVAC controls to all LED's since all of them were blown with the stock bulb..

Also amazing my AC switch bulb still works since all the others I've ever seen were blown..

Speaking of that the dealer says the bulb is a non replaceable bulb but it is.. just a pain to get to it... as in removing the whole switches and all to get to it.. Good to know.. next time when it does burn out I'm going to switch it out with an LED.. simple twist lock bulb.
