ok, I have started out on this project. The order goes in tomorrow for the FLEX, and a TEIN Rear Strut tower bar. I plan on posting up pictures of the install here, and letting you folks know how it feels and rides. For those who don't know I have a '99 Legacy Wagon L (BK). Here are the parts that are on the cars suspension now.

Current Setup

Front Sway Bar w/urethane bushings -- Whiteline (19X Bar)
Front Alloy End Links -- Whiteline
Rear Adjustable Sway Bar w/urethane bushings -- Whiteline (18/20/22mm) (*Currently set to 18mm)
Rear Alloy End Links -- Whiteline

These are the items that are going to be installed......

New Items
TEIN FLEX Coilovers -- To be delivered by Friday (*'04 GDF WRX Sti Part Number: DSS40-6USS1)
Rear Strut Tower Bar -- TEIN (*PBS29-01000)
Rear Heavy Duty Sway Bar Mounts -- Whiteline
Rear Control Arms w/Group N bushings or pillow ball -- STi

That is it. I will post up the pictures as soon as we do the install.

Installed: *It took a little modification..... it ended up being about 1/8" short.... I would say it is just my BK. lol

Very Pleased with it. I can feel the rear of the car tightened up. I can't wait to get the Coilovers on! Updates to come.....

Coilover/Control Arm/Sway Mount Install:

A few notes first..... lol
*I did the rear contol arms in addition to the coilovers. Not only did I need a massive alignment, but I would not have been able to get it done without air tools. Only the rear control arms needed the air. I did as much as I could without air, just to show it can be done. Doing just the coilovers, it is totally possible without air. More on this later.
*With a lift, watch that the drive shafts don't slide out.... it didn't happen, but they were close without the control arms on there.
*I used Automatic Trans fliud to prep the control arm bolts.
**A ton of thanks to Jerry at Subie Guys, who gave an entire Saturday to help. It would have been impossible without his knowledge, tools, and know how.

To start: Get the car off the ground......I was lucky and was able to get a lift. Made it MUCH easier.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/03/IMG_0118-1.jpg
We removed the strut tower bars (front and rear) leaving one nut to hold each. Remove the two large nuts at the base of each strut. Then remove the one nut holding the top. The strut and spring will come out with a little help. Installation of the coilover is just the opposite direction. The rest below with deal with the Swap Mount and Contorl Arms.

For the control arms.....remove the single Jesus bolt at the hub that runs through both rear control arms, and the rear hub. No shit, we used the biggest air hammer that Snap-On offers, and 5-10 with an air chisel. It was a bitch and a half to say the least. In the pictures below you can see the bolt....
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/03/IMG_0119-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/03/IMG_0120-1.jpg

Then we removed the last two bolts that held the other end of the control arms to the subframe.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/03/IMG_0122-1.jpg
Install is again the reverse of the removal. Not too difficult, but if we did not have air tools, this would have neve happened. The left FINALLY came apart, but the right rear was screwed.... We ended up taking the right rear off with the bolt still solidly in the outer bushing. A little heat.....cough, cough, Oxy torch, cough cough. lol It cought fire, and was just a total mess. Major PITA. Anyway......

Rear HD Sway Mount.......
I really don't know why everything on the car that was the "ease" stuff was the harder part. The coilovers were the easiest part! haha Ok, the right rear was easy, granted I had done that side before..... However, the Whiteline mount had the rear mounting nut for the actual bar miss welded. We just bolted it through with a high grade bolt and nut. The left was not the same, it was much worse. After the forward Mount nut BROKE off under the gas tank filler tub...... yeah...... We just said enough was enough, and welded the front to the car..... lol It is not comming off now!

Those are the main points of the install..... Here are the finished pictures. I will give my impressions at the bottom....

Impressions:
OK, I have to first say WOW! Replacing the original sturts (153xxx miles!) was amazing. We had to cun the brake lines from the original strut bodies. They TEIN are very stiff, and I can see why most people might think the are too stiff. I like them so far. I did not change the ride height initially. The above pictures show what that looks like with the factory adjustments. I was getting rubbing on the rears, so I raised them 1/2". With 80lbs of stuff all the way in the back of the wagon, the rubbed a little. I did not change the pre-load. The fronts are pretty low, but did not really rub. However, after it settled over 36 hours, the are just starting to rub. Tomorrow I will get final pictures of the ride height, and the bottom thread left at the bottom. The plan is to raise the rear about 3/8" and the fronts about 1/2". Hope you guys like the look of Project Sandstone. lol

Impressions 2:
I still LOVE them. The issues that I was mentioning was when I tried to adjust the height, i forgot that I had loosened the retainer for the preload adjustment..... So, the Left rear was set to MAXIMUM preload, and I had to take it back to Traverse to take it out and get it back down. The ride was SO hard. However, now it is good to go. The rears have 1/2" from the bottom of the strut, to the bottom of the mount. Fronts have a little more, 1 1/4". (See picture below, right rear) I ended up raising the car, and in the pictures below it is set to 25" front (Ground to bottom of wheel well) and 24 7/8" rear. It looks great, handles out of this world, and still "looks" stock. The picture below is not the best, makes it look kinda high. When it stops raining, and snowing........ I will get some good ones in the sun. Enjoy.

Impressions 3:
Ok after running these for 90 days I have to say it is a great investment. If you want a real sports ride (willing to give up a little comfort) you will be amazed at how much corning power the ol' under-powered BK can give you. The big news is that I figured out the rubbing that I would get at maximum corning. You may have noticed that my BK still has the rubber fender liners in the rear. The ones that cause the rust on the fender..... lol(rust free so far...) That is all that is rubbing. Tire to rubber liner... barely. So, I have stopped worrying. The fronts are totally fine. Though I did do a hill-billy fender roll on it. Only a slight one, hardly anything really. Even after the suspension settled (only slightly), this makes the BK stupid fast in the corners. With the BFG KDW2's, the damn thing refuses to let go. Like the say... I end up driving faster on the on-ramp than on the freeway.... lol I will get some current pictures up tomorrow.

Looking forward to it. Did you buy new or used? Also let us know if you need to change the top hats side to side on the front, as some people say.

Looking forward to this, as most don't put the coilovers on the wagon, but do the strut/spring job.

lol The order will be going in soon. I think I might be getting it really cheap. I have done lots of business with the vendor, and they also owe me one for taking 6 months to get my last Whiteline Rear Bar for my BC. I got the bar less than a week before it was totalled......

To try and prep for the new summer stance, I put the summer tires on. wow it is amazing what a difference the BFG's make! They are 215/45/17, and SO much better than the snow tires! haha

I would love to go with 215/45 or 225/45 but with my current stance (before suspension gets in) it would look horrid.

dude you will love them. i just put those on my 01 leg wagon. it dropped it about an 1 1/2" with more room to go up and down. i do have a problem with maxing out the camber adjustments in the rear. so im going to have to build a custom adjustable lower control arm. unless any one has a suggestion? i have found a few for wrx and sti but nothing for the legacy.

are you having problems with negative camber? i just put the TEIN super wagon coil overs on my 01 leg wagon and before had a problem with the front being out -3, now that's fine. but the rear is out -2. did you have to do anything to your car?

why did you replace the control arms? did you just replace the 2 on either side with the sti ones? and just curious where did you get them?

They were "left over" parts that I got 2 years ago for my BC, which did not have rear control arms set up for a sway bar(car lacked a rear sway bar). So I thought they should be put to use. LOL and Michigan uses WAY to much salt on the roads......

Coilovers are springs and shocks.

You could use WRX fitment lowering springs like TEIN STechs w/ WRX struts & tophats and you'll get that low.

Nice to see the Wagon love. lol I need to get a "Wagon Mafia" sticker now..... I am the second owner of the car, and the first owner lived in Boston. So I think the sea air got to it a little. It does have a rather high amount of rust for its age. Oh well, that could be my next post..... fix rust, and paint. haha Nah, the next major job is going to be installing something with a snail. And newer trans internals. lol

Oh, to the point of the ride height, the car is a lot higher now. Almost to stock heights. I was rubbing bad down that low. However, I am learning a lot about coilovers..... I did not have a lot of pre-load on them so start with (in the pictures). I have much more pre-load now, and the car is great. I also adjusted the height to get a little more room under there. lol Is there anything wrong with running a lot of pre-load?..... I think I could go back down in ride height, with the preload that I have now, I am just tired of getting under the car without the lift..... It is much harder, and I spent 6 hours in the rain perfecting the ride height on Tueday. And I had a little problem..... it will be fixed shortly. Nothing major though. I will get some pictures up when I get back to Ann Arbor. Ends up the captain I was going to fly with dropped the trip and I am flying with some cool new guys! haha Funny how things work out.

running a lot of preload means you're basically compressing the spring even with the weight of the car off the coilover so it just means you're increasing the spring rate that you're starting with as the expense of losing some suspension travel (you're basically moving the spring closer to the point of hitting the bumpstop/coil binding). But this would solve the rubbing issues during regular driving since the spring is more resistant to motion changes that would move the wheel closer to the offending area. As long as its not a lot of preload (something like you're compressing half of the spring already without any weight on the coilover) it's a non-issue. The "best" way to get the optimize the height and preload on the coilovers is to cornerbalance the car, though its not really necessary for a dd.

ScaryFatKidGT
04-16-2009, 05:24 PM
I wish there was wide bodys kits for BD/BG/BK's or something so you could go that low without rubbing being such a problem but I guess all subarus kinda have that problem.

My car on scales: 3075lb
06 wrx on scales: 3300lb
my friend's 06 sti track car with a bolt in cage is near 3500lb. I think he needs to work on weight reduction.

preload doesn't really increase the spring rate, since when the suspension is loaded the spring is compressed past where it was preloaded to. The spring will compress to the same length regardess of pre-load. The big thing that pre-load does is reduce droop travel. You should only run enough preload to keep the springs seated at full droop, plus whatever it takes to corner weight the car. If the ride heights are incorrect and you don't have independent adjustability you need helper springs (too high) or longer main springs (too low).

I wish there was wide bodys kits for BD/BG/BK's or something so you could go that low without rubbing being such a problem but I guess all subarus kinda have that problem.

At least they fixed that on the new sti. You can run a 265 easily or a 285 with a bit of rolling.

I'm saying excessive preload can lead to those issues, specifically when you are compressing the spring past normal droop. Going up one or two turns past where the spring sits uncompressed on the coilover is not a problem.

Yep, that is what I understood. I might be running a little more than two turn, but not much. I can't wait to get home so I can go for a drive. lol I am also going back to Subie Guys to correct a little problem that I am having with the left rear. Nothing major, just need some real tools (all mine are in Traverse, and my roommates set sucks). lol I will get some pictures up asap, and I will wash and wax her too. I am planning on going to that Novi meet this Tuesday.

curb weights confuse me
ur cars a wagon with manual right?

I think he got the weights backwards a BD is 2900-3000 the bg/bk is around 3100 like urs and the wrx's go from 3100 up as the moddle years progress

tell us what you think il be interested in if the tien flex types are to stiff or not

My wagon's around 3100, my STi is closer to 335-3400.

Looks great on the coils, man. I might know who can hook you up with wagon mafia stickers, too ;)

lol Sybir, I think I might need to be "jumped in" to the Mafia. lol I think that I am going to increase the preload a touch so I can drop it back down a "little." Just to give it a little better look, and seeing as that I have not been rubbing! I am going to be at the Novi meet. Gotta show a little Legacy love.

Love your wagon man! Hopefully I can afford to get mine repainted this summer. I'm riding on 03 WRX Tein H-Techs and KYB GR2's.

As a new BK owner I must chime in and compliment the look of your wagon. I don't think I'll put coilovers on mine, but I could certainly be talked out of that with more examples like this.

I guess I just looked at it as the best way to get the ride height I wanted, proformance I wanted, without rubbing. Thanks again. Good to see people like the ol' BK! She is on her way now. Furture unknown...... I am looking at a house, so the snail will be waiting.....till winter.....

Car looks great man.. Just was wondering, not to be nosey, but how much did the tein coilover setup cost you? I have a 99 legacy outback wagon and i want to lower that as well. I've gone onto Tien's website and it doesnt show what to use for my car? What did you use for yours? Is it possible to get Tein coilovers for like a wrx, or sti and have it bolt up to my car?

Thanks man..
Any help would be appreciated...

No worries. Huffed is right, I put it all in the first post. : ) I used an 04 WRX Wagon/STi fitment, and I love them. I still have some fine tuning to do though. She is a little bouncy right now (more damper needed) but it is just a blast to drive, even with the 155xxx mile EJ22. If you have the money, go for it. You will be pleased. Not to mention I can get the height I want, with the grey spring rate. If you have questions, ask...... There is a good chance I made that mistake! Haha

if it is that i do go for the coilovers... do i have to get the cross bar thing as well?... :smt017

No. And I really question why you think you need coilovers if you don't know what a strut bar/brace is...

Well I'm actually researching these items via this forum hence the reason I also join... Interestingly I jus want my ride to have that aggressive look as well as having better handling whilst driving!.....

Not really into the technical stuff which seem to me a must with these things

Huffer

Coilovers are not for everyone. They are typically a MUCH firmer suspension and while you do gain a massive amount of adjustability and the potential for having much better handling, you can trade off a lot in comfort.

I'm not racing my car, so I'm going with replacement struts and lowered springs. My setup is also half the cost of a good set of coilovers.

Ok... I'm not racing my ride either.... Funny I was looking at the same setup lastnight after replying to ur post.... the issue is I can't seem to find any for my right.... Most drivers of the 96 Legacy seem to use WRX stuff... My model is Legacy GL not sure if the same can be used... Chassis # begin with JF1.... Lookin for suggestion.

By the way could I use back my existing struts....with lowering springs

Huffer

You have a BD chassis. This means you can effectively use an Impreza suspension from 94-07 with a little finicking. You will have to swap out rear top-hats on 02-03 WRX suspension to make them work.

You can buy replacement struts and springs that will lower your car.
Struts: KYB, Bilstein
Springs: H&R, iON, RS*R, Whiteline, King Springs (all these still available).

There is a group buy on iON springs right now if you are interested.

Interesting.... How do u know that my chasis is a BD... I'm seeing JF1 engraved in the firewall and the aluminum panel.... I'm not question ur knowledge jus need to know where to look.... And I don't understand the group thing.....

And what's a little flicking means?

Looks towards the end of the VIN. It'll say BD5 or BD6...something like that.

When he says finicking he means it'll take a little work to get the suspension to fit just right.

If you order iON "BD" chassis lowering springs you can use them on your existing struts.

Ok that sounds great.... U did mention of a group ordering process is this still happening?..... If yes how can I participate... Plus what ride height that these springs gives or can I choose.
