I ordered a replacement water pump from ebay which also came with the timing belt and the other stuff like the seals and idlers..

Anyways my question is since this is my first time which seal is what? I know it comes with two cam seals and a crank seal but having never done this before not sure which is which.

That's tough.. here's a pic for reference that might help:

Looks like the two smaller ones are the cam seals.

The orange one looks like it's for the crank seal, and that big huge one.. I couldn't tell you. I don't remember seeing something like that when I did my head gasket build.

Oh that makes sense! Yea, those four are the cam seals and the orange one is the front crank seal.

The rear main seal is huge in circumference so you wouldn't get that mixed up.

You need a special tool to get these seals in, well it's not really a special tool but it fits around the seal and it has a centre solid piece that you can hammer and it applies even pressure around the whole seal to snuggly fit inside. I'm sure you can create something similar :D

Well I don't have 4 cams so I have two extra. And I don't understand I'm sure the seal can only go but so far can't I just use a screwdriver with something blunt over it? The haynes manual says use a socket but the largest I have is 22 mm

The thing is.. it's a very very tight fit. If you use the handle end of a screw driver, you'll just keep popping the other side out.

That's why you need a surface that covers the entire seal and one good soft blow will push it inside and compress it. Hitting one side will just keep popping the other side out.

You can maybe try getting a friend to help and both use a handle end of the screw driver and a hammer while simultaneously hitting it so both sides get forced in together.

If you can't get it.. just goto Home Depot, buy the socket that fits, use it and return it :smt005

I do that sometimes

ahh I did not think about that one... maybe I can try driving to HD... as long as I wont get stuck in traffic I should be fine.

so we know how to figure out how to get the seal in but how do you take it out? and how do you stop the cam from turning when trying to take the bolt off?

Factory service manual my friend.. I don't have those answers :(

I believe there's a cam locking tool that you can get that locks both cams. I would look into that and definitely get the service manual.. I think you can find it in the literature section!

I already have the FSM but they use special Tools for the crank and the cams.. if it's going to be a pain for the cams I will just leave that seal in

Crap well home depot did not have single sockets larger then 19 mm they had a socket set but not worth my $79

I went to auto zone and picked up two deep sockets that fit the diameter of the gaskets should have no problem now

ah fuck.. bolts are so rusted that I snapped 3 areas of the timing belt cover the anchor that holds the bolt came out with the bolt as one piece.. the only one that came out normal was on the driver side under the oil fill tube.

on the good news looks like my cam seals are leaking and so is the crank seal..

bad news is I snapped two other bolts for the radiator fans

Yeah its tough to get it all lined up. Sometimes it helps to have a friend keep track of the part of the belt that is already on while you devote your full attention to getting the last little bit on.

the driver side cam is off now which is a pain.. i'm trying to figure out how to get it lined up again..

here is the picture I took not too long ago.. I might have to remove a idler to get the belt to slip on because it's a tight fit.

If I recall I may have loosened one of the pulleys a bit, wedged the belt on, then re-tightened the pulley. Just be aware that while you are fiddling with the belt one of the cams could be slipping. Make sure you made marks to keep things lined up and if one of them turns, a huge pair of channel locks turns the cam gear easily.

ha just as I thought I took off the sprocket idler and forced it down on the belt.. with a little cursing I finally got it on and my timing to be correct it seems... I should of ordered that outdoor heater but I wont do the rest till tomorrow since it's cold out and I need to paint some more stuff in the morning.

question.. I'm all done just that when I pour coolant in it's leaking from the thermostat housing like crazy.. almost a steady pour...

I take it the gasket goes in first then the thermostat?

crazy after all this I'm still with a leak and a bigger one at that!

the gasket goes around the metal edge of the thermostat. theres a little slot in the inner ring of the gasket the thermostat sit in

lol yep I just figured that out.. I did not see it on the old gasket because it got so gunked up I had to pry it out of the housing..

car is full of coolant... should be good to go!
