Will a 2001 GT stock exhaust bolt right into a 98 GT? If not can it be easily modified?

no, at least not as easily as one from an impreza.

so an 01 impreza will fit a 98 2.5 gt limited

Not without some work to the flanges/hangers.

People need to understand that there are very few "bolt" exhausts for the 2nd, 3rd gen Legacy. But the work involved isn't major for any decent exhaust shop.

In that case could you suggest a decent replacement exhaust for my 98 gt limited sedan? not really looking for performance but that would be a bonus. would like a close to stock look but not crucial. would that impreza exhaust meet the bill?

It depends entirely on what you're looking for. Any Impreza, Legacy axleback will be able to be made to fit your car with a little work by an exhaust shop.

I have an 05 STi exhaust on mine. Cost me $75 to buy, and $110 to fit to the car with a custom midpipe.

Do some looking around the site, get some ideas.
