ok i kind of think i know the answer to the question just wanted to bounce it off some people to make sure i was correct with what i was thinking. so been getting a misfire in cylinder 3 cel and went to replace the plugs and wires thinking they went bad but as we were tearing it apart we checked the coil for spark and it wasnt sparking in the lower passenger side coil plug(cylinder 3) so i replaced the coil and it worked fine for about a week when the cel came back on and it was misfire in cylinder 3 again. so what im thinking, could it possibly be a bad ecu that isnt immediately making the cylinder misfire? my brother works for valvoline and can reset the codes on it and it ran better once the code was reset but im sure its going to come back. so really my question is - can the ecu be bad in this situation or should i look elsewhere? thanks alot and any imput would be greatly appreciated.

I honestly dont know if the ecu is ur problem. I had that code a while back and replaced the plugs and wires, everything was fine after that.

Clear the codes. Take the wire from #3 and swap it to #4. See if the misfire code comes up on #4. If it does, replace your wires.

your ecu is not at fault. the coil shares cyl 1 & 3. theres many things that can cause misfires.
valve lash
burnt valve
wires
plugs
coil
injector
front O2
and the list continues
