Ack!

So we went for a drive in the mountains on Sunday, and I noticed a clicking that sounded like it was coming from my front/driver's side wheel well when I turned right. The clicking sounds almost like something shorting out, that kind of zapping sound you would hear, although that doesn't exactly make sense.

hellaGT suggested it might be something to do with the CV, but the boot looked to be intact upon our brief inspection. I am fairly certain it is only on the front left, but I am closer to that when I turn, so I'm not positive.

O noes! More money into this thing, lol. What do you guys think it is, how dire is replacement, and what's the best product to be used in replacement?

I'm hoping to have a garage by August, but then again, I'll be driving quite a bit in between now and then, so I don't know if I should wait that long. I also never noticed it prior to driving it hard with the windows down in the mountains, so I don't think it's that severe, or at least it wasn't prior to Sunday.

still could be cv, even with good boot, heh i replaced my left front with a remanufactured unit from autozone and it clicked too, all they did was clean and repack the joint and put a new boot on it, i was not happy, bought a NEW one from advance auto for 49.99 and replaced, problem gone......

How much work was replacing it yourself? I'm guessing I'd need at least a jack/stands for it. I might just have to pay someone to do it. =\

it is a great deal of work if you are not experienced, not to mention the rust issue, my car is hardly rusty at all and I had a few bolts that snapped even after i soaked them and heated with torch, had to drill and tap to repair. if there were no issues at all it is a one -two hour job with the right tools and equipment.

Oh man, I can get it done for $50 in labor, I'm thinking that's well worth having it done right. Thanks for the heads up.

Actually, I think I'll have it done when he installs my ION Springs to save a little bit of cash monies.

It's better to replace the whole axle rather than just replace the boot section. Bit more expensive up front but easier to install.

I have two axles to throw on my car this spring when I do my springs. I've actually rocked all winter without needing it done, including a torn boot.

Really? Damns. How much do those usually run? I hate that I have to throw more money at this thing, but luckily financial aid is about to pay out, lol.

That is confidence inspiring that you went that long without any real issue, although I don't know how long it was an issue on mine prior to me noticing it.

Is there anything else it could be down there? I'd like to know just in case it doesn't turn out to be the CV.

wheel bearing possible, but they make a dull thump or a roar the faster you go usually. when i said i replaced mine with a new one,i meant the whole piece not just one cv and boot. advance auto sells a complete half shaft with inner and outer cvs and boots fully assembled ready to go on, had mine for a while, they fit correct and have some kind of warranty.

Replacement axles are $50-80 depending on what you get. I got new ones on Ebay for $120 shipped for a pair. I'm not beating on my car except in the snow.

Honestly, the first thing I usually look for is loose or torn plastic or metal - if anything is rubbing on the wheel on a turn it can make a sound much like a bad CV.

Phil - want me to take a look at it? I'll be in downtown Sac this Saturday and Sunday, might be able to drop down to Davis for an hour or so.

It could be ANYTHING, seriously. I've had clunking come from something simple like a loose axle nut to something major like a broken spring...

I highly doubt that's what it is in your case, but I think I made my point :lol: If it is the cv axle, it could be done for about $100-$250 depending on if you want new, rebuilt, or just need to replace the boot.

Kyle, I work at 6 PM on Saturday, but am free prior. I am closing the bar Friday night, and don't usually get off till 3 AM or later (earlier? lol), so for obvious reasons, if mid-day worked for you, that would be better for me.

Kyle's right you should have it looked at before you purchase a part. Sounded like a mild CV joint click to me though.
