View Full Version : Happiness with 16" wheels?

I've been thinking, after running around on 16" wheels for the past winter, I'm actually pretty happy with that wheel size. I know everyone always likes the 17" and even larger wheels, but after looking at my car and driving on the smaller rim, I've grown a new appreciation for them. Cheaper cost of tires, more rim protection, and with the right design they look just as good or even better than 17" wheels I've seen. The only real problem is the rarity of 7.5+ width in this size with the right offset.

Anyone else feel the same way? Or not

Unless I have a burgeoning bank account, I'm staying with the 16" wheel... less weight, less to clean, cheaper tires... and my car doesn't look too bad with the 16" wheels when you remove the fender gap. :)

yep cheaper cost per tire which is why I think I wont run 17's for the time being.

+1 on 16's if you are runing 215/55s on them its the best combo for DD and definitely cost efficient. only reason im goin to larger size is to keep that same ratio where side wall is around 11cm, i think its optimal for street tires

i love my s'flakes. i love the way my dunlop ds-1 225/50-16 look on them. even though there oversized snow, they had much better grip than my 205/55's blizzak in powder and wet snow. slush they suck at (but every thing suck in slush) 17's are ok. im not to much a fan of 18+ rims. though i want to pick up some wr legacy lmt 18's.

17's are nice. 16's are good for dirt and autocross. i use 17's to drift with.

I really like my black rs 6-spokes. Put them back on today actually.

For summer tires I'd rather have a wider 17" wheel though.

I like both for different reasons. I like my gold 17" O.Z. Superleggeras on my RS for daily driving and looking really good in general. I like my JDM gold 5-spokes on the RS for track and for a weekend of spirited driving. I like my 6-spoke silver RS wheels on my Outback for looking really nice and fitting a good size tire for DD. I like the 16x6.5 gunmetal WRX rims on my Outback for matching the theme of the car, fitting ratty tires on to thrash on a gravel road, etc. And I like the stock Outback 15's for mounting rally tires to.

I wish i had some 16" steelies to swap on my car for rallying and snow. But I really do like my 18"s not just because of the more aggressive look, but because of the MUCH better road handling with the lower profile tire. It made almost as big of a difference for cornering as my whiteline swaybays did.

I love my 16" wheels. I got rid of all my other sized wheels. The 55-ratio sidewall provides a good balance of performance and ride quality, and tire options are abundant. While it's a shame there are not a lot of 16x7.5" wheels out there, there's hardly any room under the wheel wells to take advantage of such a wide wheel anyway. Couldn't even get 225/50/16 under there without rubbing, so what's the point of having a 7.5" wheel.

There's a lot more clearance in the BE's, I know you can stuff a 245 in there with the right offset

I like my 16"s. I also like the way 17'' looks on the BD lowered slightly (like 1'').

Low road niose from the tires, cheaper tires, and everything that has already been said...

I may get a summer set with 17" and put some winter tires on my 16" v2 STI rims... down the road though... quite literally

I'm using 16" 2006 Impreza wheels on the Outback and they look damn good. The spoke comes up all the way to the edge of the rim, so they look bigger than they are.
