intake ?

i didnt think i was kidding and no i wont buy a honda...im not trying to make my car sound straight out of the fast and the furious...to be honest i like the sound of the turbo but the car stock is almost completely silent just want to make it sound nice, not obnoxious damn...im new to all this shit i was just looking for suggestions.

One of the things Subaru enthusiasts enjoy the most is the distinct sound of the boxer engine. The rumble that is associated with the horizontally opposed engine, in many of our opinions, sounds much better than the raspy whine of Subaru's Japanese counterparts. In fact, many people go through quite a bit of effort to eliminate any hissing or raspy sounds completely, in favor of the boxer rumble.

I think, after reading your response, that you're interested more in gaining the sound of a blow off valve from a turbocharged engine rather than a hissing exhaust note. There may be a way to achieve this short of installing a turbo, but that is definitely not my area of expertise. Might I suggest rephrasing your question and going into further depth as to what exactly you are looking for, that will allow others to point you in the right direction and more effectively help you find the information you are looking for.

Being that his car is a 2.5GT, he's already got a turbo. So a blow off valve would be a nice option for some sound. But if you want to research some specific parts for your vehicle, have you checked out www.legacygt.com (http://www.legacygt.com) ? They've got mostly '05+ Legacy's. Not trying to push you away from this site at all, but they're more specific to your generation Legacy.

I understand that and i like to consider myself an enthusiast...this is my second legacy since i fell in love with my 97 gt...i deff love the sound of the car as is...the car comes stock with a turbo so it already has the blow off valve sound. i guess i used the wrong term when i said "hiss" haha basically i like the sound the cold air intakes...just looking for some recomendations on which ones are better than others becuase i have no clue, never had one before.

I believe what you're looking for is that turbo spooling drool-inducing sound? I like it too.

A more open intake should let it breathe better. Though I'm no turbo aficionado

^^ it's a little hard to offer technical advice when the guy really wants some subjective info on what intake will give him a "sound".

and for one - the factory BOV is more than adequate for these cars.

I used to have a saab 9-3 turbo back in high school and I came up with a pretty sweet intake for it. Basically that sound you want is associated with the increase in intake vacuum caused by the turbo spooling up, and the best way to really hear that IMO is a cone filter with smooth and somewhat long intake tubing. I had a 2 piece system that you could set up as a SRI type with only one piece of piping and then the filter mounted in the engine bay. With both pieces (CAI style in place the filter sat in between the fender well and the bumper and this produced a much louder sucking sound than the shorter set up.

I'm not sure if your car has a MAF sensor or not, but it's generally a bad practice to use a non-recirculating type bypass valve (BOV) because the ECU then underestimates the amount of airflow going into the engine when the valve opens. This doesn't mean there aren't a ton of people out there who do it... it does sound freaking awesome

A simple snorkectomy/snorkus delete is enough to both hear the turbo whine, and factory BOV. If that's not enough, a pod filter is all that is required. Getting a good exhaust also helps immensly.

My legacy came with the snorkus removedl; that combined with the 3" catless turbo back exhaust, and the turbo sounds BRILLIANT. You can hear it start to spool up way before you even hit boost. It's quite nice. I can't imagine how good it would sound with a pod filter - but I don't like the reputation they carry for older cars like mine.
