I am a new Legacy owner with a potential problem. I thought I might of had some brake pads in the rear getting low ( sounds like the beginning of wear sensors touching ) yet I found out this noise is coming from the rear differential..? I am first going to check the fluids, but does this sound ring any bells for you veteran Legacy owners? Any help appreciated.

ive seen spyder gears and bearings go in the diff. but never like metal to metal sound. most people came in for the car vibrating like a bastard or on service metal chunks in the fluid. what years your car btw?

Sorry its a 97' the sound isn't "severe" sounding, just annoying. If i change the rear diff fluid what fluid do you recommend?

I'd recommend you flush it first with something generic so you aren't tossing money out the window on top notch fluid for no reason. After you find out that it's definately not the rear end; Royal Purple is commonly used around here. It's not the favored, but common.

How many miles on your car?

Is it a 5spd or automatic?

Have you checked out the rearend fluid since you posted this? The current fluid that's in there now (if there is any in there) is it old or empty?
