13 hours later.. tranny is out

First time doing a job this big. Don't have many tools, just a 15" breaker bar, 3/8" drive ratchet, 8-19mm 3/8" drive sockets, several extensions and adapters.

Followed the tips many of you have provided and the FSM and then a whole bunch of reading/research a BFH and a lot of cursing... Ended up taking off a bunch more stuff than the FSM says! Took off the IACSV, TPS, pitch stopper bracket, and one other sensor or solenoid on the passenger side to give me more access to pry the tranny/block apart..

I rounded off one of the bolts connecting the driveplate to the flexplate, the wrench slipped off when i was trying to break it. The bolt looks a little special but do you think I can just replace it with a standard bolt?

Tomorrow will take the drive plate off, change the rear main and the oil separator plate, and hopefully can get the tranny back on without too much trouble.. it was a PITA to get it off of the engine, i'll say that..

Why did you pull the tranny? It's a hell of a lot easier to pull the motor than it is to pull the tranny...

i dont have an engine hoist and seems like a lot more work to me to pull the motor..

coolant, AC lines, vacuum hoses, harnesses... :-?

with my engine hoist i can have my motor unbolted and in the air in 6 mins timed myself the 9th time i took it out. thats including the bellhousing ,starter,exhaust and motor mount bolts. and taking off my PS pump..

personally i don't think going for a fast time is a good practice when working on your own car, or any car for that matter. you'll greatly increase the chance of screwing up and causing way more damage.

Damn!! That doesn't look good for Subaru trannies. Seems like it became a hobby for him.... either that or he's lonely. Either case, speed working usually has it's downfalls... like repeat customers.

Yeah, luckily he didn't damage anything. He wasn't actually racing to get it out, it was just kind of a "hmm, I wonder how long this time will take him" since he had just done it twice prior. The effin' pressure plate included in the Exedy Stage 1 Clutch Kit was incorrect, so it would not reengage the slave cylinder and pop the pedal back off the floor. Two months later, RaceInspired.com finally issued me a refund for the thing.

the only reason i said that was because i don't think it's a good idea to advertise doing things the fast way instead of the right way. there are plenty of people on here that don't know what they're doing and it's not good to give them unfounded confidence in doing something potentially dangerous.

of course, you would know nothing about this since everything is about making your car "cool" to you, and you forget to realize that people get killed by these machines everyday. Cars are NOT TOYS! you're the one cutting your springs and showing off how you just made your car unsafe for you and everyone else around you on the road.

Seriously tho...

That's great that you admit that you had to do something repeatedly, so you can get the hang of it... or was it for some other reason? But you keep forgetting your first time and how long that took you. now take into consideration, he's not you. I like your car, don't get me wrong. But I don't think this guy wanted to measure Dick sizes with you. Probably just get some pointers and move on.
