Why is my transmission still whiny?

Trans is out of a 1994 GT Legacy, clutch/flywheel out of a 1999 GT-B Legacy
Filled mostly with 75w90 and a bottle of 80w-90 i think.
Checked after a 20min drive to warm things up it reads full on the dipstick.

Whine increases with speed not rpm and is more pronounced under load.
Trans is silent when unloaded and all the synchros are working spot-on

Shifts sweet and doesnt crunch ever. Only nasty part is getting into 1st but thats my crappy clutch adjustment

Try this.

Also stay away from "Uncle Scotty's Cocktail" it will destroy your 5MT.

Sorry shouldve stated its filled with valvoline 75w90. But now that i think of it...i had that in my old GT and it also whined.

My 5MT will whine a little when unloaded.. I don't know if it's normal or not since I never drove a subaru MT long term.. if it's loaded then the sound goes away.

My 1998 NA 2.5GT had a whine in 2nd and 3rd, and a very very minor whine in 5th. My WRX has gear whine in 2-5th, but it's also abused a little more.

If it's really loud, I'd worry about it. If not, it's probably due to the teeth on the gears wearing down and is normal. Eventually, it'll get really loud, and you'll get annoyed, and have the gears replaced, or find a new gearbox. Using a cocktail of different gear oils will lubricate it better and keep it from whining and wearing down the teeth so fast.

If it was my car, I would either find a gearbox from a 2000+ WRX, or a 6 speed, and stuff that in it, or buy a set of PPG 1-4'th gears (straight cut syncro 1-2, helical syncro 3-4, and replace the 5th gear with either a brand new 5th that matches the rest of the gears, or if it will work with the rest of the gears, a brand new 5th gear that would work with a 2002+ USDM WRX). Granted, buying a set of PPG gears and a WRX or OEM 5th to fit the case is basically putting a brand new gearbox into the casing, but it will certainly last forever. :)

Having it whine when it's loaded vs unloaded just means the gears wore differently, that wouldn't be something to worry about either.

20,000km on and the whine is a LOT louder. Noticeable in 1st, 2nd is quiet, 3rd is very loud and 5th makes a rumbly whirr noise.

New gb on the way for summer! Going to have a crack at building a bit of a custom one.
4.444 gearset with a 4.111 final drive and possibly a 6th gear in place of 5th (depending on how cheap i can get a 6th)

Nope its DEFINATELY a dead gearbox. The gearsets are just horribly worn. Each gear has a different pitch whine

I no longer hear the whine from my gearbox, the turbo inlet and short ram took care of that right quick. :D

I found this thread because I searched for a whine in the transmission. My '95 4EAT had a very loud whine once this summer, then it almost went away. It is still there at the moment and now that its freakin cold out it seems a bit louder, but not as loud as the first time it happened. Not as pronounced with load, no CEL's, no performance decrease. Difference in mine is that mine whines WITH rpms and not speed. Now I'm thinkin maybe it could be part of the engine since the whine doesn't increase with speed?? I'm not sure, anything else that sometimes whines that's near the engine/transmission connection point??? I mean I know my car is OLD and all, but it only has 127K on it. I remember it happened when I had the shifter in 1, then moved it to 2 in motion, NOT in D. Next morning, it went all whiney.

**EDIT, So just listened to the whine again. Pretty sure it's coming from either the A/C belt or alternator. Something in the front, NOT the back. Idk how I messed that up... :neutral: So my whine is not a transmission thing... nevermind..

20,000km further on and ive killed it. The bearings related to 4th gear have grenaded and the whole thing is a mess. Also stripped a few teeth off 1st gear. Turns out rev limiter launches and flat shifting for 12 laps around a race track didnt do it any good :(

The car has been retired from motorsport so i have a newer 1996 WRX gearbox to go into the car next week.
