torn cv boot

so i was looking at my headlights and fog lights and though i would check and yep my boots torn so thats y all that gunk is on my tire (every one keeps telling me its brake dust)

so what do i do? can you replace just the boot or do i have to get a new cv axle?

also when travling highway speeds my car and steering wheel vibrates back and forth about a half inch back and forth on the wheel its really anoying and i dont know what it would be sometimes it totaly goes away but it is usualy there above 45mph.


just a FYI i am looking in to getting some poly steering rack bushings and solid endlinks if thoughs whould help at all

you can replace the boot. you have to make sure the cv joint is still good. in my opinion it best to just replace it with a new axle. the time it takes to pull the axle out to put a new boot on isn't cost worthy. you have to take the axle out clean all the grease and dirt off of it , put the new boot on fill it with grease and hope you got all the dirt out of it. if you missed a piece of dirt its going to destroy the bearings over time. then your back to replacing the whole axle anyway.

ok well should i try to get a used cv axle or buy a new one? and are they that hard to change so i could do it myself or should i just take it to a shop and give it to them?

I have had 2 of these replaced before and I'm starting to not really trust the shops around here

you can do it your self if you have a 32mm socket. 19mm, hammer, good bar, and a couple punches. some know how. for what its worth reman axle are $55-65 i wouldnt buy a used axle unless its extremely cheap.

The shaking is most likely being caused by your axle problem. If not that, get the tires balanced and the brakes checked out.

The only reason you'd need to your axles would be if you need beefier, stronger ones for more power. For instance, WRX guys who go RWD usually upgrade their axles in the rear so they don't bust the stock ones. And no, STi 6-speed axles will not fit your 4eat tranny. Just get a remanufactured axle from Autozone, NAPA, Kragen, or whatever parts store is closest to you and be done with it.

Now about the shaking my rotors are warped and the car shakes when braking but this is a less Severe but more rapid shaking when driving. Under braking i get a bump...bump...bump that slows with speed this is more of a shake.shake.shake rapid back and forth that seems to be unafected by speed but it only comes on at highway speeds there is not a specific speed but about above 45mph

I have had an alignment done but not my tires balanced so that might be a good idea

yeah...when you replace them dont put rubber ones back on
both my boots were ripped and i spent $300 to fix both front axles cause they wouldnt do just the boots and about a week or 2 later they were both ripped again so i gave up.

but i have that stuff on my front tires too and thought it was brake dust...now i know its not..thanks man

I was not aware there was any option other than the rubber boots...

Whenever I replace mine they last at least 65k miles...

If you don't know something for sure, don't post it. You're just contributing to the confusion.

I'm tempted to lock this one up because I'm tired of seeing people post from their butts and not reading posts correctly.

If your CV boot is torn; you can repair it by replacing the boot. However, most DIY mechanics will agree that it is almost as cheap and as easy to buy a replacement axle. You can buy new, reman or used. Most will recommend buying new, and upgraded axles are not necessary unless you are running extreme levels of power.

You can buy axles online, or at most parts stores. Ebay, etc also carry them.

those repair boots (2 peice) that you can just cover the cv and regrease. are some type of polyurathane.

ill make one...thatll be the first thing i try to make right out of college cause the rubber always rips so when it succeeds ill make a post about it
