what is this clutch sound?

I can't tell what it is really.. If I push the clutch in fast no matter when like at a light or whatever I get this springy metallic sound like something is tapping on metal.. it's hard to describe without the sound file but it you push the clutch in real slow it wont happen.

almost sounds like the bearing in the throwout bearing is shot

yeah I kinda figured that.. I guess when this last owner had his clutch replaced he just had the clutch replaced and that was it...

So I guess pulling the engine is the fastest/quickest way however I don't want to buy an engine puller to only maybe use it just once....

and since it would seem I need to replace the TOB I might as well put in a lightweight flywheel but would that cause any issues because of the clutch?

so reading here on NASIOC and most say the TOB only makes the sound when the clutch pedal is not pressed..

I wonder if it's the pilot bearing? But it's funny if you press in the clutch very slow it wont make a sound..

hmm another thing I found that seems to be pointing to the pilot bearing.

Step 1 With the engine running and the transmission in neutral, if the noise occurs it is in the transmission, most likely the front bearing supporting the input shaft.

Step 2 If that is not the problem, place your foot on the clutch pedal and begin to depress the pedal. If you begin to hear the noise at this point, the problem is the clutch release bearing. If not, proceed to the next step.

Step 3 Push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor. If you hear the noise at this point it is the pilot bearing or bushing. If you do not hear any noise during this test, the problem is not in the clutch system. Identifying these conditions early before removing and replacing the components goes a long way toward preventing a recurrence of the problem."


having said that are they self lubricated or do they require greasing on install?

pilot bearings are sealed bearings
