Aftermarket WRX exhaust fitment to turboed Legacy Outback BG

There are plenty of misconceptions going around about what exhausts will fit on what cars and in the N/A realm its usually just a matter of lenthening the midpipe and rotating a flange. I don't see much info relating to us turbo'ed or swapped boys so I picked up an SPT exhaust meant for a WRX this weekend and after test fitting it, its obvious that the fitment is way way off. The midpipe needs to be lengthened at least 5 inches to meet my 3" downpipe and the hangers on the muffler are not nearly long enough to allow the tip to clear the Outback rear bumper. I am having a friend do the welding for me tonight and I figured I'd put up some pics once the exhaust is fitted so people can see what needs to be done. Hopefully I can clear up some rumors and this thread will come up if people ever search for info.
Jey I'm curious what exhaust you were running on your Legacy?

That's actually the same as an NA application - the WRX midpipe is much shorter (again, but around the 5-6" you mentioned) than the NA application and even with the Legacy in general. This is why Impreza midpipes don't fit, even though the rest of the system is similar.

Well I must admit I was a bit surprised. The fact that the whole exhaust was far from fitting irked me a bit. I suppose the only reason the flange doesn't need to be rotated is because it is bolting to a 3" catless downpipe which was meant for a WRX in the first place, thus the flange angle is correct. I halfway expected the length to be a problem but the fact that the hangers for the muffler are too short was annoying. I couldn't even hang the axleback portion of the exhaust. I've got a fabrication genius working on it tomorrow, I'm sure he'll have it all hooked up great and I'll take some pics.

I feel ya. The hanger placement is odd, but it goes in line with why GC sways don't fit.
FWIW, I got a custom midpipe + 05 STI axleback mated to my stock header+cats for around $180 in parts n labor.

at least you have a base to start with. Heck, if I had a BD, I would probably just use my stick welder to get that WRX catback lengthened to fit :lol:

But I don't. So every exhaust change has to be custom made :roll:

Well the exhaust sounds mean!!! I had my friend who is a master fabricator do the work. He had to add 8" to the midpipe and redo every hanger. He heatwrapped it so I can't really show the part that he added but I'll put up some pics of how it looks anyway. The tip doesn't extend past the bumper because the Outback rear bumper is so long.

So you used a stock WRX exhaust. I'm surprised you got the hangers to line up at all. I guess you lengthened the midpipe too? I've got my old exhaust still in case your interested. Its a cobbled together de-resonatored EJ22T Legacy Turbo exhaust with a flange for a 3" DP.

I can get my hands on a BNIB 2002 wrx stock axleback..... what would it take to make this sucker fit on a BH L?? i repeat, JUST THE AXLEBACK. hopefully not much??

I just dont wanna go all the way to meet this guy to take a look at it as well as climb under the car for no reason.

no sir.....
i might not bother with this. theres just a loose heat shield or SOMETHING metal in my stock axleback and it rattles like crazy. muffler still works, it just also makes a rattling noise similar to a loose regular heatshield

There is a heatshield above the muffler on the bottom of the car that could be loose. You might want to check that. As for fitment, the flange will not line up, nor will the hangers.

my 98 legacy has a impreza wrx 3' turbo back exhaust.. a little short because the wrx is shorter but, once a cat was put in, they rotated the muffler and it worked fine!
