i apologize if this is in the wrong spot; i have a 96 legacy lsi 2.5 (i also have to do this repair on my friends 97 2dr impreza), the filler neck is leaking somewhere at the low part of the main fill tube (where that shield is), i know i can get a new one for like about $110, i was wondering if merely replacing the lower section of the tube with a piece of gas resistant rubber hose would work or if it would cause issues with the emissions. i havent removed it from the car yet, so i'm not sure how bad the damage is. also, a technical question, what does the small tube do that runs parallel to the main fill tube do? can i plug off? or is that bad? has anyone come up with a cheap repair for this? thank you for any advice.

replace the filler neck ive seen cobbed up filler neck with just rubber hose and they always leak
the smaller tube vents the tank when you filling the tank.

replace the filler neck .

:smt023 The safest option. Remember, a temporary fix is what it is: Temporary.
You'll end up doing the job twice. I bought mine off Decke himself (Used) and it's a common problem (rusted filler necks). Get a near new replacement and skip replacing the black plastic shield in the end. It's what rots out the neck in the 1st place. I followed Huffer's recommendation of just undercoating the heck out of the neck after installation. No problems so far, and it's been installed for a couple of months now.

True. Don't chop it off or plug it. Not a good idea :smt018

Total time to remove and install for me; (using basic tools and going solo) took about 15-20 mins.

Yep, the reason it's a common problem is because of the plastic shield they put on there for looks. It collects dirt, salt and water.

I had one replaced on my sedan by the dealer at a cost of $300. That's when I discovered the trick and have prevented that section from rusting out prematurely on my wagon.

ok thanks for all the help, any suggestions for the cheapest place to order one? or just shop around ebay and junkyards? as for the trim level/engine, this is the second subaru that i was told 'doesnt exist', well, it does cuz thats what i'm driving, my last Subaru, a 97 impreza brighton 1.8 liter 2 door, a dealer told me that it didnt exist and that i must be confused between my 2 door and a wagon. i was alittle shocked since it was a dealership. but then again all my cars have unusual quirks. this ones no different.

subaru p/n
96 2.2ez (1/96 to 6/96) 42066AC110
95-97 42066FA031
lots of different p/n for 95-99 legacys for fillernecks so i cant tell you what other years will fit thought you would think there the same design i cant tell you for sure. better to buy new unless you can find a rust free used neck. you can try to find them aftermarket. or pay the dealership $110 for a new one. and bring them youre vin for the correct one. its not possible for your car not to be visible in the subaru computers. the must of type in incorrect letters or numbers

if u didnt already know its a week spot on subs replaced my gf's and i took off the plastic shield covering it. The plastic shield traps in salt and mud. I also used some undercoating on it once i got it done to make sure id didnt rust.

Where do you get at it from however? I think I will take the shield off my new one.. I don't want it rusting out again. Are there any benefits to keeping it there?

Take the wheel off. Use a Phillips screw driver or a 10mm socket. No benefit to keeping it on.
