View Full Version : creaking sound when turning wheel

I don't/can't figure out what this sound is.. but I do know it's getting louder whenever I turn my wheels on my car lock to lock I get what sounds like it's a door with creaking hinges.. I know my PS pump is leaking a little but it's not that bad.

things it could be is a dry tierod or balljoint, the rack, or strut top hats

Check your steering rack boots. You dont say how many miles are on the car but i just went through this. At 245,000 miles (crappy parts, sheesh it wore out) i had to replace the inner tie rod end.

Have someone listen as you turn thw wheel to see where the noise is coming from, its pretty easy to pinpoint by ear.

Ah I forgot.. the car has 201,257 on it now.. it's becoming more annoying I will have to check it out this weekend. if it is a dry tierod end do I have to replace the whole thing?

At 201K it could be both ball joints and inner tie rods. I had to do both (I had a shop do the ball joints as the car was getting really wierd and it was a rainy day).

Tie rod inners can be had for cheap new on ebay. My outer tie rod ends are still original.
