Keyless Entry?

I recently picked up a 98 Forester S.

As far as I know, the car was never available with keyless entry from the factory.

I would love to have Keyless Entry. Maybe an alarm too.

I want something as close to OEM as possible. I just want my doors to unlock when I push a button. I'd prefer it to be like most other cars. Push the button once, drivers door unlocks. Push it twice, all doors unlock.

Is there any way I can get an OEM Keyless entry system to work? Are there any aftermarket keyless entry systems that are very close to OEM?

You should be able to wire the factory keyless entry into the system (assuming you have electric locks)

An aftermarket system would be doable too. I have a post in this forum called 'The 12 volt' or something like that. It contains a site that tells you all the wiring info you need.

I have an autostart in my car, and I put one into my moms myself (both have AT).

But the Forester never came with Keyless Entry as an option (at least not in 98).

So I likely won't have the plugs to plug into the control brain.

So what aftermarket systems do people like for OEM-like performance? I wouldn't mind having an alarm, but not required.

I like the WRX's system, would there be a way to use that?

In 98, the Impreza still used the Phase1 EJ25, and I'd imagine all ECU and wiring is exactly the same between the Forester and the Impreza Wagon. Was there a Keyless Entry option on the 98 Impreza?

I can always go aftermarket if I have to.

I think after 96, the power door locks changed, and remained the same, keyless or not. Find someone with a slightly newer subaru with keyless entry who'll open up their door panel, and compare it with yours.

Circuit city sells an aftermarket Keyless Entry (no alarm, no gadgets) system for 60 bucks, I believe, it should be easy to wire it up.

Keyless entry has nothing to do with the ECU nor do you need to go anywhere near it.

Openiong up someones door to compare seems easy but theres not much to look at but plastic and metal.

Im assuming you already have power door locks, which you should according to subaruinfo.com You can also buy the Factory keyless entry or alarm, as its an option for your vehicle.

first things first. i'd just call up your local dealer and find out if it is possible to install the factory option. you really have nothing to lose mate.

hey phil, have you popped a door panel off to see if there is an actuator in the driver's side door? On the bc/bf's, there was no actuator. My route would be to buy an actuator with integrated remote sensor, bolt it to the door sheetmetal along the door lock arm, and run a wire out to it off a quickie fuse on the battery. Adding an alarm is an unpleasant job and quality work is essential, i don't tend to trust garage monkeys to it.

Ebay is definitly the cheapest way to go. The dealership would be mucho expensive

no, no keyless entry system would, because we have no driver's side lock actuator due to the power lock system being activated by the driver's side door.

I came to this sad conclusion about the 95s a couple weeks ago :(

I think what you mean is that theres no Subaru system (there is a secutity system that comes in the LSi's though)
Its easy enough to wire an aftermarket system in though if you get an actuator for the drivers door.

How does the power lock system work in a 95 driver door? Is there no lock/unlock button? if so, instead of an actuator there must be a little plunger type dealie that sends the signal when you move the manual lock/unlock lever.

Once you get a later year or aftermarket actuator in like marks planning to do (?) you can put the keyless entry in. Youd have to rig it up so when you pull the manual lock/unlock at the sensor will still activate and lock/unlock the other doors. Otherwise youd just have 3 doors unlock but not the drivers, which is useless :?

You could still put in a subaru system, youd just have to know what all the wires do and splice them in manually (not too difficult, but its not plug and play)

it won't work! Nothing will be able to unlock the driver's side door unless you buy a driver's side actuator (which would be a PITA to install, as there was never meant to be one there). Then maybe the OEM kit would work. It's for 96 and up.

well, the PITA part comes in 2 ways:

It is really a pain in the ass to install (did it a month ago on the passenger side front door).

secondly, you would have to swap all sorts of stuff in the door out, as the driver's side really doesn't have a place to accomodate for the actuator, mounting would really be a pain.

Worth it? Maybe.

No, that's a bad theory, usually 1st year cars have all the major upgrades & accessories from the previous generation, that latter year cars usually have the reliability going for them.

Quite honestly, the 95 I have has been extremely reliable.

is this for a driver's side door? Does it come with all the other mechanical stuff (all the bars that the locks operate on?). Because if it doesn't, you may need to halt the operation until you get that stuff, I don't know if the current setup in your door would allow an actuator.

but I already have those bars in my door, I dont exactly remember what everything looked like when I had my door apart but I do know I have the bars.. I wish it would stop being so damn cold so I could get out there and check it out :x

Has anyone installed an OEM keyless entry system in their originally unequipped Legacy yet?

On LegacyCentral, a gal had OEM keyless entry in her '93 or '94 Legacy, which seems to indicate that it is possible to retrofit an OEM keyless entry system on our cars that don't have it.

Also, can anyone post pics of what the OEM driver's door actuator looks like? (If pics of the actuator were originally with this thread, they are gone now.)

i have a 96 wagon, it only need a cheap actuator on the driver door. why you need to pay 60 for an keyless system if u can have security and open door with the same money.

I found an easy and cheap ($35) solution if your 96+ Leggie had power door locks, but not keyless.
