hatch dampers for hood???

I really like the idea of the Tein hood dampers, But I'm not sure I want to pay $150-$200 for a set, and still have to fabricate something for them to fit my BE. So I got to thinking (dangerous, I know) Is there any reason I couldn't use a set of dampers for a hatch gate, wouldn't even have to be Subaru. I could probably even get a set at a junk yard for like 10 bucks. Am I overlooking something or is this a possibility?
Any thoughts or Ideas appreciated :cool:

Some things you should consider.

-Mounting points for the fender bolt and the hood bolt.
-Length of the damper
-proper rated damper

Recently a friend installed a set of Tein hood dampers for his GD 05' RS. He found them local for $100 and they seem to be identical to the ones found on the BG besides the mounting plates.

You maybe able to modify the mounting plates from a cheaper Tein hood damper set if you choose not go the junk yard route.

all i know is that the SVX has hood dampers so those might be a good candidate for the swap. since i have an SVX parts car now, i may try the same.

Ixiz has hood dapers for less than $100. Not a directly fit, you're going to have to DIY it to fit.

Been done, there's a writeup floating around Nasioc or RS25.com somewhere where they DIY'd brackets and used Impreza hatch struts. If you can do it for $50 it's worth it.

Assuming you get dampers that are rated for the correct weight then you should be all set.

Those dampers are missiles during car fires...

Thanks for all your input guys. As far as weight, I'm pretty sure a hatch on a minivan or such is WAY heavier than a hood. I may just have to research for a bit and see.

Hell no. The hatch weighs about 70lbs because of the glass. The hood is about 40lbs.

that and look at the angle of the hatch as it lifts, its almost completely supported by the struts, where a hood would be supported a substantial amount more by its hinges.
