Has anyone put an STI rear window spoiler on BD Legacy? If so, pics please.
If not does it even fit? I was thinking about putting one on mine.
This is the one I am talking about.

Not entirely true. It should help close the negative pressure wake behind the car making it more aerodynamic wing or not. With a wing it also increases pressure on the wing.

The main reason that spoiler is put on there is to divert more air into the big wing to maximize its effects. Whatever laminar flow it helps create from the air going over the roof is being diverted downward, not in the right direction if there's nothing there to take advantage of that diverted airflow. If you want something to smooth out the airflow as it leaves the roof you're better off with something that's angled more appropriately, like the roof spoiler on the 09 focus coupe.
Until someone can run this in a wind tunnel sans big wing and prove its usefulness by itself, and not how subaru had intended, I see it as on the same level as the guys wasting their money those EVO vortex generators on the back of their roofs.

Shouldnt you be putting more bandaid stickers on your dents? :smt016

I've read Mitsubishi's technical documentation on vortex generators, and their resulting increase of pressure on the rear window does in fact reduce drag (the presence of a wing is irrelevant to this) according to Computational Flow Dynamics analysis, I don't believed they actually put it in a wind tunnel (which is hardly necessary with modern CFD software). I am making one assumption, however, that the STI rear window spoiler does the same thing, that is increase laminar air flow over the rear window, which I don't see how it wouldn't unless it was entirely useless in its design (regardless of car).

That's an interesting article, thanks. However I would like to point out that according to the article mitsu had to calculate the right shape, spacing, height, angle of the delta shape, and even the right placement of the vortexes on back window of the Evo. How the final VG design came out is completely related to how air flows over the Evo's roof specifically. I doubt that all the ebay knockoffs take all those variables into account, nor do the guys that buy these things even calculate the proper placement of the vortexes on their roofs to actually create a downforce effect.
In other words, it's there to look cool. Just like the subaru guys (more WRX owners than anyone else) that put the 06 roof vane on their cars. I'm not telling the OP to not do it, just understand that it's not going to be doing anything actually useful.

I think it's presumptions to think that either the STI roof spoiler or aftermarket VGs would be useless, though it's certainly possible. You're right about the development being partially car specific, however some aspects can apply universally. I've read on AutoSpeed about generic vortex generators being used and successfully reducing drag (Blowing the Vortex series (http://autospeed.com/cms/search/index.html?keywords=blowing+the+vortex&x=0&y=0); the writing's a little amature but the content is good). Long story short, all I'm trying to say is keep an open mind about it.
Getting time in a full sized wind tunnel would likely cost several thousands of dollars, unfortunately. You'd be much better off making friends with an engineer and have him make a couple CFD models (perhaps for the cost of buying him lunch for a year). There are a few ways you can measure the drag coefficient of your car on the road (one of which is covered in AutoSpeed's Real World Measurement of Drag and Lift (http://autospeed.com/cms/A_109741/article.html) article). They're not bulletproof, but it's a start for anyone on a budget.

I doubt the Subaru spoiler acts like any VG. I'm sure this is just a simple fix that the Subaru engineers used to keep a competitive edge with Mitsubishi. Unlike a VG, this design would most likely result in a higher drag ratio because it is not using vortex's to create a smoother laminar. It is just diverting air with an inverted spoiler to the rear spoiler for better flow to the rear spoiler. This is probably a small drag increase for more rear downforce. Mitsubishi's design is not a new concept as it's been used on aircrafts for years, it just so happens it works well with their design. I've also seen real world examples where VG's actually improved a design, but the Subaru rear window spoiler is not a VG nor would it ever act like one. If you put an inverted spoiler like that on any car it would just create drag and lift. Even if it did increase flow attachment to the rear, there would be better ways of doing so.

I had the opportunity to test one out on my car (BE),
Good news: it fits without trimming and matched our c-pillar line.
Bad news: It looks a bit odd with our top window line.
Our roof with a spoiler looks like this ---> ( ) while the impreza window line with spoiler looks like ---> ) )
So it can look odd if you look at if from the side right near the window.
But from far back and any other angle it looks good.
I'm actually thinking of picking up an OEM one locally, but need to look at it again to see if it's worth buying one and drilling holes....
OEM is better because you can drill holes from the outside thanks to the removable end cap, the eBay ones will take a little more work because you'd have to make a template or use one of the gaskets to figure out where to drill.
EDIT: I was thinking, black vinyl could be applied to the corners of the roof OR body colored vinyl on the window, to "fake" the right curve...

And keep in mind, you might have to drill holes into the body pillar and securely mount them on. Make sure you siliconed the hell out of those holes in order to prevent rust and/or water leaks.
Mounting them using glue/epoxy isn't going to hold at certain wind speeds. Just to let you know ahead of time.

Notice: This may not be the ideal placement of it, the mounts were not flush in all of the pics because I kept moving it around. There are locations where the mounts are flush, so don't worry if this doesn't look right.
You can also see what I was talking about earlier with the shape of the window line vs. the shape of the spoiler. However, It matched the roof curve and the window curve so it still looks fine.

Now by just looking at the pictures. It doesn't really curve with the body/window line. What if you switch it upside down? it'll looks more "flush" with the window there.
And moving it higher wouldn't hurt it either.

I was worried that moving it higher would look odd, or create lift. It's lower than he's pictured it if you look at the STI.

And moving it higher wouldn't hurt it either.
I've mentioned this in a few of my posts, it is only noticeable from a few angles, any farther than 3 feet from the car and it looks fine. However, I thought about this, but it's actually an airfoil shape, so by turning it around it would cause some weird drag issues I'm sure (not that having it the current way is going to be beneficial anyways... :-? )
Plus the way it attaches to the mounts is a one-way kind of thing.
AND, having the curve open towards the trunk just looks crazy because it sticks up, its apex would be something like 6" above the roof line even if the mounts were 1/3rd of the way down the window.
And like I said, this isn't the dead-set placement, i can move it around and everything when I actually install it.
EDIT: If my car were black with tint, you'd never notice, being that it's white, it's very obvious. I mentioned earlier using black vinyl to replicate the curve off the top of the window onto the roof, still an option...
EDIT2: A la...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/07/adjust2-1.jpg
Jeez... One more EDIT
The reason it doesn't look crazy weird in person is because it matches the other curves on the rear end... the trunk lid near the window, and the trunk spoiler curve. It's hard to get a good idea of this factor without the full view of the car. Maybe tomorrow I'll try to take a full rear shot so you guys can get an idea of what it looks like in context.

Sure, here's a big batch of pics and some measurements:
The mounts flair out from top to bottom of c-pillar. So at the most outer edge of the "top" of the mounts, it measures roughly 46.5". "Bottom" of the mounts it spans about 48". Holes are relative to this as well, measuring about 45.5" and 46.5" respectively.
Here's how the mount looks:

And as promised, a few pics from more angles and a distance. Please note, it moves through out the pics, I've found an ideal location for it's placement so again these are just for reference, not the final placement:

Right, the aftermarket ones do not have end caps, so mountng would be harder because you would have to measure a lot more before drillng so that when you bolt it on from the inside, it matches the holes on the bottom.

There is seriously ONE spot where it fits just right. And even there it needed to be snugged up to the c-pillar with the hardware. Drilling was stupid easy. Reading the install threads for WRX's on NASIOC made it sound like it would be a bitch. But on the BE, there is only one layer of sheet metal for the bottom bolt and 3 very spaced-out layers for the upper bolt. A sharp bit and decent drill was all it took.
Hardware needed was 2 bolts measuring 2.5" x1/4" and 2 measuring 1" x 1/4", and of course washers, lock washers, and nuts.
I also used high density foam tape to seal up the feet. This is similar to what was on it from the factory, and then finished off the holes with silicone.

Looks great - you win. I don't see any of this hail damage you mentioned though?
you can see some of the damage to the window trim in the close up pic of the exposed foot. The entire passenger side has a lot of dents but the rest of the car is fine. It's suprisingly hard to photograph, at least in full daylight.
Technically every panel had damage, so they totaled it, but I can live with the damage for a while, and they gave me a decent check plus the car, and the title stayed clean. All the more reason to do things like this.

Not possible. When insurance adjustments like a payout for total loss occurs the car MUST have a salvage/R title. You'll want to check this with them again, and get it in writing. You'll also want to make sure this is the case with your DMV.

I have the title in hand and it is not salvage or rebuilt, or branded. Allstate said that because it was hail damage, it does not create a salvage condition. I'll gladly give you the allstate totals Adjuster's number and he can tell you himself.
Edit: found out Colorado doesn't require hail damage to be indicated on the vehicle.

I stand corrected then - in Ohio if it's listed as a total loss it's an automatic salvage.

Yea, It seems to vary widely state to state, I was surprised myself since i thought totaled meant branded title.
And BD4, yea I think it was discussed earlier that the BE is wider at the rear window. Hopefully you didn't have to install it too low, making it look like a Merkur or something...

Yea, that's why I was saying you should have trimmed it. As in, take the actual airfoil out of the end mounts and cut it shorter length-wise, and then put it back together. It's only extruded aluminum, would have been easy to do with a angle grinder....hell even a hacksaw.
Too late now I suppose with the holes in the c-pillar. But at least it's not in the middle of the window.

Maybe I missed it but where can you buy one that will fit a BE?
its jus a stock STI Roof Spoiler. I got mine used from ebay for 120. It fits the BE's better because the rear window is wider. obvisoust u have to drill ur own holes in the c-piller tho. u can get one from a subaur dealer but prolly a lot more expensive.

10-25-2009, 05:30 AM
What year STI will fit?
Also, did you have to remove the plastic molding on the inside of the c piller to attach a nut or what ever?
MoclovFlop
10-25-2009, 10:10 AM
It only came on 06-07 models, but because the rear window never changed on the WRX/STI from 2002-2007... you can get any roof vane advertised for those years and it will work. However, be wary of the eBay knockoff ones, as it may be more difficult to get proper hole placement. As i stated in this thread, the knockoff ones do not have removable endcaps, so you can only attach them by screwing hardware into the feet from inside the car.
And yes, you have to take out the c-pillar trim to access the hardware and do some sealing. Putting them back in was actually the worst part of the job.
Having seen MoclovFlop's first hand, I think it actually looks pretty cool.

Well I have taken the plunge and bought one. It wasn't off e-bay it was from a NASIOC member for $180. The end caps come off so it is legit. Its not CF but I am ok with that. Unfortunately the caps are white and will needed to be painted to match my car. Updates and pics as this project progresses.

I think I have just about everything I need for this project: Power drill with new bits, High density foam tape, silicone, bolts, washers, lock washers, and nuts also paint and clear coat. The end caps I am getting are white. Will I have to sand the caps at all or can I just paint them silver a few times then clear coat them and be done with it?
The spoiler comes tomorrow and with some luck it should be on by the end of tomorrow. But knowing how other "simple" projects have gone it might take longer.
Is there anything i missed parts wise?
MoclovFlop
11-02-2009, 09:06 PM
Just sand or prime the end caps (I did both) use a higher grit sand paper (400+) to not leave visible marks and use a white primer if you go that route.
And since your base Is white and your top coat is silver, if you only sand you'll be fine color wise, just do a few coats to get good coverage.
Let the end caps dry for a while before trying to snap them on, you will be putting some pressure on them and don't want to leave fnger prints in the fresh paint. I drove around without end caps for a day just to make sure they were good.

Sorry buddy I posted in both forums to get more responses. But I get what your saying. When I went to that paint site I only bought the paint and clear coat not the primer. No one answered my post when I asked if I needed primer so I didnt buy any.
Was it easy to take out the plastic molding inside the car? Is there a trick to it or a certin place to start taking it off? Did you have to take off the OH S#$T handels?
MoclovFlop
11-03-2009, 01:01 PM
It's easy to take off, just work you're way around the edges pulling, and no there's nothing else to take off. Getting it back on is a bitch, I don't have any advice there execpt expect to break some of the clips. I have taken mine off for the head liner and the roof vane, so I'm down to like 2 clips holding each one on....
And you can just buy some primer at the hardware/auto parts store. Or don't use any and just sand well.

Not that hard in the end. Like MoclovFlop the hardest part came in the end when I had to reinstall the plastic molding. Especially on the driver side for some reason.
Turned out the bolt spec's of 1/4" x 2" were a bit short for me I had to take a trip to Home Depot to get 1/4" x 3" and it worked like a charm. Also, the foam tape I bought was way to thick when I applied it and trying to cut it to a right size was just not going very well so I tried to cut it to a decent thickness. So there is some foam tape on the feet but not much.
Drilling was a breeze. Once I marked the right spots and kind of measured and eyeballed it I just started drilling. I suppose I could have spent all night measuring to get it to the exact spot but I think I did a pretty good job being by my self. MoclovFlop was right there is a sweet spot where it all looks and feels right.
Tomorrow my paint is coming and then I need to sand the end caps and paint and thats it. When I was at Home Depot the highest grit sand paper they had was 220. Is that going to be fine enough? I looked for 400+ but they just didn't have it.
MoclovFlop
11-03-2009, 11:35 PM
Looks good!
Do not use 220, that's for rough sanding wood, make a trip to an auto parts store tomorrow and get at least 400.
