View Full Version : Low oil
Yesterday I was fixing my exhaust just tightening up some bolts that were loose and noticed that where my headers bend around the oil pan, the oil pan looked slightly burned or something.
When I went to check my oil it was quite low, about below half, which seemed odd because I had just changed it 3 or 4 weeks ago.
Are the headers burning up the oil? or is it something else possibly. Would heat wrapping the headers help? and how much does that cost usually?

How much oil did you put in to begin with?
I've always used thicker oil...5W-40, 5W-50, 10W-30..
I filled it up when I changed it, I can't remember how much that is supposed to be off the top of my head. There is 10w-30 castrol gtx in there.
And I have aftermarket headers, I think they are Borla knockoffs but the guy I bought them off of didn't say.

Yes, the oil filter take in some oil. I always put in 5 quarts and call it a day.

:) I always run 4.5qts as a refill because you never manage to drain ALL the oil.
Well I put some more oil in there and now it's full so I guess all I can do is wait to see if it does it again.

Sometimes my Legacy will hold its oil no problem even when racing and other times it will come up quite low. I think I've got some blow by going on. I need to rig up a catch can or AO separator. You using oil could be any number of things, just keep an eye on it.

Heh. I'm going to be running a remote oil filter kit on my WRX with an oil cooler. I'm pretty sure that all in all, I'll be putting 5.5-6 qts into my car each oil change. :)
And my LGT, when I had it, never quite got up to the full mark until I gave it 5.2 qts, and that was even with prefilling the oil filter.

yeah, just make sure you're consistent with how hot the engine is when you measure the dipstick. You'd be surprised how wide a range the oil can fluctuate from checking it cold vs. warm (subaru manual says check during each fuel stop).
