I'm looking at the 550 series. Has anyone owned some Hellas that can tell me how awesome/awful they are?

Bring it on!!!! Got my snows on and its time to play!
No experience with the Hellas....
(maybe the title should be a little more specific...I've got some Hella Supertones awaiting installation...so I was wondering what Hellas were being discussed)

I'll second the 500's. The 550's are too small to put out any significant light. That is to say, light up the road past the point where you'll hit what you see before you can brake. We live on the edge of town where there are no street lights and enough deer that its in my best interest to see WAY down the road. The 550's will spread a wide beam which is good for a slow cottage road, the 500's will shoot a beam far down the road so that you can see objects at a distance and safely brake from highway speeds.

I have a set of 550's in my garage that I don't intend on using. I DO intend to install some 500's on the Forester....
Though I may actually use the 550's also, and mount them lower and inboard of the factory fog lights. A totally unnecessary amount of light, but it'll scare off people intending to flash me for high-beams. The Forester has great headlights too, they are almost as good as the ones in my Legacy!
This is my buddies Impreza with a few lights. I think those are 500's on the bumper...

I didn't drill through the bumper myself. I did drill through the bumper support behind the front grill. The bar is a 90 degree type and rests against the front bumper but is not attached to it. However, the platform is stable enough that the lights never jiggle, even down the roughest roads. You can rock the car up and down by grabbing onto the light bar, its quite solidly mounted.

GTW- I like your mounting system. I was thinking of something like it also, but my idea didn't involve a crossbar...do you think it helps a lot?

Hmmmm go with the 500's, but I warn you the stock 85 amp alternator does not like it one bit if you are also running a good sized stereo....

With that said anyone know where to get an aftermarket alternator? :smt023

well, I don't plan on having 4 hellas, and I'm running a very small amp, so I guess I'm set :)
Actually, my alternator might be going bad, so I'm looking towards the aftermarket as well...

I have it set up that you can run two at a time and it still taxes the alternator pretty good. Oh well I contacted Vermont Sports Car to see what they use (plus I also asked to see the Rally Cars)

Weird, I didn't get notification of any more responses to this thread. Mark, I believe the crossbar gives you that much more stability on across a second horizontal plane. The more anchor points the more stable the platform.

I had a pair of Phoenix Gold XS2500's , about 1000 watts rms worth of power. Sure the lights dimmed a little with the stereo and the lights blazing but it still works to this day.

My setup is a bit ghetto but looks just fine on the '91. It cost me about $12 total. Two L shaped pieces and a square bar of aluminum cut to size.
Aczwild - Got closeup pics of your mount ? That's more like what I'd like to have on the '97, nice and clean.

If you need me to I can measure it up while I'm home over break and put it on AutoCad, or SolidEdge so you have some blue prints.

No prob, the grille was actually a spare I picked up at a local Junkyard, so I had no prob cutting it up

Actually I wouldn't mind. Got any pics of the mounting points ? I'm curious what exactly its mounting up to. THnx !

The bar screws through the bumper, and then through the hardened white bumper beam. The bar doesnt come with bolts, but they were easily accessed at a local hardware store. When I get home I'll pull it off and measure it for you and show you how I put it on there and the hardware used.
This thing is on there solid which is pretty amazing

Think you could get a few measurements if it's not to cold? Mostly mounting hole-to-hole, and the holes you cut for the bar to go through the grille?
I'm wondering if this will work OK on my Forester. I want an excuse to have 4 500's on the front, and that bar looks pimp.

With the fogs on that location, will it affect the air thats supposed to
go through the radiator? Or did you even see any difference at all?
I like your avatar Aczwild!

BAC I'll take some pics tomorrow (I have my last final exam tonight and by the time I get out it will be dark) and take some measurements.
pagong I have had no problems with cooling the car, there is plenty of air flow still and behind the lights are two Hella Supertones horns further blocking the radiator and yet I still have not seen an increase in temps or any probs and I drive the car 3 hours home when I'm on vacation, so the flow is fine.
Thanks on the avatar. The car looks really mean with the lights on it and hopefully this summer I'll be able to squeak some coilovers under it to make the stance super nasty.
That will finish my suspension mods and then I can save up my cash for....
An S3L short block from Crawford Performance. This baby will be going Turbo!

Pictures would be great. Did you have to drill new holes or are there already mounting points ? I could always use an excuse to mount more lights on the wagon.

Drilled four new holes, but if you take the bar off and put an un modified grille back on you can't notice them

I too would like to see the mounting points of the light bar. Rallitek claims it fits all model subarus, but i've learned that usually means NOT the BE/BH legacy. There's no place for me to mount more lights, so a lightbar is needed. only problem I have is the rallitek one is like $140....
