Your Legacy is NOT an off-road machine

I learnt it the hard way today.

Went down a driveway that didn't SEEM too bad, ruts didn't SEEM too deep.... but the right combination of the wrong things and I ended up with this:

What wrong things you ask? Recent rain + dry-weather tires + slow speed + dumb decision = dirty car stuck in mud.

That's after I got it backed out about 15 feet, it was stuck farther in. Had to ditch trying to rock it out and one failed attempt with a 2.5RS Impreza (never off-road alone, kids!) and a rope. Went back to borrow something with a little more sauce. And locking hubs.

Never again. I'll keep my Legacy(s) on the road from now on. :smt011

if you didnt go in the rutts you wouldnt have gotten stuck lol
one tire in the middle and have the rutt in between your front tires and you could of made it through

if you want to go in the rutts just floor it...works all the time for me

All of you are right and I did try (except for having an Outback :razz: ), if you look closely the truck we pulled it out with is on an angle because, well, there was a curve back there. So I couldn't get much speed. I was outside of the ruts on the left and had to cross over because of the brush on the left side of the "road". I made it across (that's actually where the car got stuck when I backed it up) but hesitated because of the huge sippy hole that you can kinda see in front of the car in the first shot. There were no more ruts, just water, and I wanted to stop before I took a plunge.

Maybe I'll go again when it's been dry for a few weeks, and scout the "road" first. Maybe take my bike in there. But if it's even a TAD soggy, I'm done trying too offroad this thing.

I've had really good luck offroading in my Legacy. It's a combination of the right line and the right amount of speed. I've made through some fairly deep holes for a car and haven't gotten stuck yet, knock on wood!

if your seals are bad ohh yes. but otherwise its hard to force mud threw the seals. much more worry about water

hmm odd I was on the USMB and they all went out for some fun in the mud and after the day was said and done about 3 of them all had bad wheel bearings maybe it must of been the water? I did not think mud could kill it like that... I don't think they said how deep it was but from the pictures maybe 4 inches.

I couldn't say i didn't do any damage(s) to the car. The driver's rear camber bolts knock loose and thus turning the wheel inward and contacting the strut. Ate a good chunk of rubber off :lol:

I got mine stuck the exact same way. I was just driving a little dirt roa, nice and slow, when lo and behold, a mudpit! My car stopped dead and stalled. I tried rocking it for about an hour (I was driving alone), and I tried digging the wheels out by hand to no avail. I then walked to the closest house, all covered in mudd, and asked if I could borrow a shovel and some cardboard. Took the shovel back to my car dug out the wheels some more, and put the cardboard under the rear wheels. Nothing. Then my parents called wondering why I wasn't home from work yet.... "well, uhmm...." After I explained myself and gave them directions to where I am they came and pulled me out with our Ford Explorer... and boy were they pissed. I will never do that again, well I shouldn't say never, at least not until I get some bigger wheels and put a 2 inch lift on it. (which I plan to do) but I agree, legacy's werent meant to beat through snow, not to be a farm vehicle...

Off roading is all about getting stuck!! It just means you are doing it right haha. I explore in deep snow, not mud though. I'm always worried about ripping my header off or bending/breaking the rest of my slightly rusty exhaust components with dirt/rocks.

I guess I don't understand the obsession with going off-road with your car. The Outback is a different story, its more like a small SUV than a car. I dunno, I have absolutely no desire to take my LGT off-road.

If you do plan on going off-road though, you need tires designed for mud. Mud is like snow, its slippery and it packs into the tread on the tires making them pretty much useless unless they are designed to clean themselves out.

I don't need no stinking oil pan! When we got back to my house the engine was starting to make a weird knocking sound. We checked it for oil and well....take a guess. We de-greased it and used some high temp epoxy filler. let it dry, spray painted it and bam! the car then used half a quart less of oil after that. The car also had battle damage on every panel. I used to get the weirdest looks from every person while driving except other Subaru owners. always got the shocker or a big thumbs up. that wagon was a beast! and I miss her :( my poor 91' L wagon. last I saw some fat chick was using her to tow her ugly kids around. :(

I will get her back one day!

Hmm, sounds like the average death of a subaru... I pulled in beside another subaru yesterday when I stopped in the grocery store to pick up some lunch before work. When I was checking out, I was behind some fat trailer trash on welfare, with her six kids. Ended up she was the other subaru's owner...

Always Carry Chains, they get you out of all sorts of situations not just snow. Had my 1980 something leone stuck up to the belly in a mudhole with a bit of digging and fitting chains it got itself out no worries.

Has anyone put a winch on their subaru? I think that would actually look pretty cool, and it could come in handy every now and then..
